A little OT, but I've always been interested in their orgin. I know strat-o-matic baseball started sometime in the early 60s. Does anyone have anymore information? |

I think it began when people started betting on sports.

Trading sports cards. I'll trade you Derek Sanderson, Pie Mackenzie, and George Ferguson for your bent Bobby Orr card. Or maybe Table Hockey? My brother and I would assign real player names to our table hockey players and keep stats on all the players. Yeah, we were geeks, why do you ask?

late 70s, early 80s was the first publicized rottissarie style league, named after a no longer in existence restaurant. Steve Wulf, Daniel Okrent, and about 10 others were part of this first group...
Tree a total and complete geek...

1 year and 3 days before that, a man named Dave Hall was found to have organized the first underground sports gambling league, predicated on player ownership and a sports algorithm that caluculated points for performance. Since it was not highly publicized, and refused to provide the intricate details of its membership, this league has never been given credit for the founding of fantasy sports.
Hall, a James Jones-like leader, continues to provide computer kool-aid for his followers at Rotoguru.com.
