Tree, an important part in the decision making process is how comfortable you feel with the controller. I think most people would agree that the PS2 has a better controller than the X-Box.

PS2.

Both have the EA sports games....but overall, PS2 has more games.

However, if you are into online gaming....the way to go is XBox with XBox live....its way better then what PS2 has and what GameCube is gonna put out.

Xbox
No question about it...once they start utilizing the technology to its fullest capabilities it will blow you away...the SegaSports series is the best series and is the best on the xbox...not to mention other genres of games that kickass...play Halo and Splinter Cell and you will see that xbox is the system for you..

What I want to see is multiple video outputs. So for 2 two player action (off one console) you have 2 TVs going instead of 1 split screen TV. When they do that, I'm game. (They haven't done that yet, have they?)

I have an XBOX and the XBOX Live service. I'm an avid NFL Fever 2003 player online. It is a blast! Especially in the sports genre, the popular games are available on both systems. The XBOX has awesome graphics, a built in hard drive and XBOX Live. Unless all your friends have PS2 and you want to share games with them or something, I would recommend the XBOX. I've been really happy with mine.

Burnettsville, I hope to be up and running on XBox Live after Christmas, so we'll have to gets some challenges going. I just got NBA 2K3 and am learning to play the game so give me a month and I'll be ready to kick some tail. I was used to the Live series so this is my first 2K game. BTW I am getting NFL 2K3 as well in case you have it (I have friends that recommend it over Fever).

PS2 all the way...it's got the games and that's what it's all about. The user base of the PS2 doesn't even compare to XBOX's, it is so much larger. Guess where all the games go? Also, most EA Sports games are developed for the PS2 and the PS2's controller and are then ported to the XBOX.

The Xbox is a great piece of hardware with the hard drive and all, but for the sports games, the huge lineup of Greatest Hits titles and of course, the GTA series, you gotta go with the PS2

I have both GameCube and PS2.. NBA Live 2003 and NBA2K3 are both very good and PS2 just have a much wider selection no matter what genre of games you like... racing, sports, advanture, action, crime/violence, it's all there.

well, i'd been leaning toward an xbox for quite some time now, but i was at family functions all weekend, and my younger cousin (at age 15, i consider him an expert on such matters, much like i was 20 years ago), and he strongly reccomends PS2. After playing FIFA 2003 on it, i was blown away, especially with the learning curve on the game that allowed me to beat him 2-of-3 (albeit, in penalty kicks), and it got me thinking about a PS2.

as for online gaming, i doubt i'll be getting into that - my girlfriend already says to me every month "why are we paying 115 bucks a month for digital cable and a cable modem? can't you just use dial up and we watch regulat tv?"

sooo, anything else i have to pay for, i think i might get punched in the face. :o)

peace,

Tree...once you buy the Sony Network Adaptor, online gaming is free. There are currently no charges to play any of the games online.

I believe the only games that will charge are online RPG's like Everquest.

X-Box is the best system
GameCube has the best childrens games
PS2 has the best games overall

I have a PS2 and love it, but some of my friends have X-Box and it is petty sweet as well. So far, from what I can tell, graphics are slightly better on X-Box (when comparing the same game on each system). As for the games, X-Box has begun to make a bunch of games and I think it is pretty even for quality games on each system. Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and MechAssualt are some of the best new titles I have played.

As for Gamecube, I have never played it - but I am thinking about getting one. They do have some children's games, but they are starting to put out their big guns, and only on their system. The new Metroid is supposedly one of the top games ever made, and with the new Zelda out soon, I can definitely see getting a Gamecube. Boy games sure have come far since my first system - Sega Genesis. I know there are some older systems, but I never played them.

Sony will go to a pay for play model for online gaming in under a year.

Gotta go for PS2, the super high volume games are better and seemed to be written for them first. i.e. Madden/Live/Turismo/etc.

Plus I'd never get a box that I couldn't play GTA on if you paid me.

DISCLAIMER - I just recently bought the Xbox Live...so my opinion is somewhat biased...but I also have the PS2 ( yes, just for Kingdom Hearts and DDR ).

I think that the Online model of both is as follows:

Sony PS2 - Sony has free online play for games that it develops ( like SOCOM or that ATV game). However, other "Non-Sony Developed" online games for the PS2 ( I think like Final Fantasy XI ) will charge a monthly subscription service. For games that you pay for, subscription is based on a Month-to-Month and game-to-game basis. This means that if you have 4 different online games, you will have to pay for 4 different subsciption fees each month.

XBox Live - For now, it looks like it will be a flat monthly fee for the entire service ( after your 1st year "free service" is up ). From what I read, the "Free 1 year" subscription service offer expires sometime early next year. This means that you can't continually buy these "Starter Kits" with a 1 year subsciption every 11 months. At some point there will be a monthly fee, but it won't be on a game-by-game basis but access to the XBox live network. Also, it will allow you to download new content to the Harddrive.....which I think is definitely needed for online gaming.

From an online perspective, Microsoft built XBox to go online ( pretty much a regular computer with a NIC card ) from the ground up. But for PS2, it was built as a stand alone console ( many years ago ) with the ability to add additional hardware to go online. In addition, because the PS2 gives you the option to play with both a Broadband connection and a phone dialup option....you are pretty much guaranteed to get lag when when you play against people with a dialup connection ( which is a very big no-no when it comes to Online games ). Whereas Xbox live cannot work without a BroadBand connection. Not to say that you won't get lag from Xbox Live....I encountered some lag once when I connected to a game server.

If you want to get a Console PURELY based on the games ( ignoring which system has better graphics, technical specs and which Online service is better ), then PS2 is the way to go. You can't get games like Tekken 4, Kingdom Hearts or GTA on Xbox ( at least not yet ).

If you want to get a Console PURELY based on the potential Online aspect of the system and overall graphics/technical specs, then go for XBox.

Overall the PS2 is still the better Console System because of the games. With XBox Live and the way it was designed, Microsoft has positioned itself to be the better Console system in the long run if ( AND ONLY IF ) the XBox Live really takes off. Unfortunately, with Microsoft's track record, that is a VERY BIG IF.

Of course this is until the PS3 comes out ( whenever that is ).

---> This commecial was paid for by the "Bill Gates is the owner of everything" Foundation. 8-) ( j/k ).

Actually, Bob, I run the PS2 online with dial-up, and only very rarely do I experience anything like lag, and even then only for a split second. I've been very impressed with the PS2 online, and not only because of how easy it was to hook up, but also because my favorite game is rapidly becoming Madden 2K3. I'm a basketball guy at heart, but for some reason the rhythm of Madden is much more fun and conducive to online play than that of NBA 2K3. What I'd love to see next would be the ability for more than one console to work together online to draft a fantasy team and watch it play out a few seasons. Or even better, the first TSN Ultimate Fantasy Hoops and NBA 2K3 PS2 online interface. Woo-hoo!

Logan,

I'm actually surprised that you have experienced little lag when playing on a dialup...I guess that is good.

Actually, one of the drawbacks to XBox live is that Electronic Arts has decided not make their Sports game XBox live compatible ( at least not yet )....which really sucks for those that love the EA Sports line of games like Madden or NBA Live 2003. Not that you cannot play those EA Sports games for Xbox by itself.....for now, you just can't play it online.

Oh well...whatever floats your boat.

I'll have to say that while the graphics on the XBox are generally impressive, I was very disappointed with the speed of the processor. In playing Halo, I found almost constant frame rate slowdown. Very disappointed by that, after all the things I had heard about XBox being so much faster.

Giving credit where credit is due though, I really like the XBox hard drive. Best thing ever. Not having to buy memory cards (unless you want to take your game to a friend's house) is the coolest. Saves money too.

memphis how can you say the games are terrible? The knew games kick a$$...Halo, Splinter Cell, and Mechassault are all awesome....Now if you are into sports games then the games are pretty much teh same...all EAsports games are just ports from the ps2, and the SegaSports games are ports from the Xbox...they are pretty much the same games...with the SegaSports series (NFL2k3, NBA2k3, NHL2k3), performing a bit better on XBOX, and the EASPORTS series (Madden, NBALive, and NHLLive, tigerwoods) performing a bit better on PS2...personally i think that Segasports is better then EAsports and that is why XBOX is better for sports games. Look at the graphics and gameplay of Halo or Splinter cell, there is no game on the PS2 that comes close...not Grand Theft Auto, and not even Metal Gear Solid...XBOX is the best and it's games are getting better...

Halo did not come from the computer is was made for the xbox, and it is actually being ported to the computer and won't be out until next summer...and while Red Faction 2 is a great game there are differences, they include:
Gameplay
Graphics
Audio
Halo is superior in all 3 qualities...you can beat the HDTV quality, GeForce 3, graphics, the DOLBY Digital 5.1 quality sound...and the awesome storyline and gameplay...
RF2 is a great game, but Halo is on a different playing field..

Julius :

True, Halo is a great game and I think the only decent game XBox has.

I don't think you can compare GTA and Halo however, they're not even the same genre of game. And in my opinion no game is as good as GTA/Vice City.

I was speaking generally on the quality of XBox games. My friend owns an XBox and we often have trouble finding quality games to play on it. Although there are a couple good ones. I would rather take the PS2 and its hundreds of great titles over XBox -- its superior graphics, and 10 great titles.

I trust the site: www.gamespot.com alot, and their rankings are usually pretty close to mine and I would say on average the PS2 has 10-20x more 8.0+ rated games released. I would pick the PS2 any day of the week as it will keep you burried in great titles.

Look at the graphics and gameplay of Halo or Splinter cell, there is no game on the PS2 that comes close.

Your right about graphics, way off with gameplay. The XBox makes a nice FPS, they will always dominate that catagory. But they're seriously lacking in quality anywhere else. Id rather leave the shooters on the computer and keep the thousands of great titles the PS2 has.

XBOX, mainly due to the fact that almost every game out there next year is going to be OnlinE-based, and the xbox is the only system that can deliver the goods, plus you would have to buy and extra adapter to get the broadband feature(xbox has one built in), I dunno, sounds like SoCom for the PS2 looks great with the headphones/mic and teamplay online, but your choice is all yours

btw, FPS is not the only genre that Xbox has...it has great racing games, sports games, and others...splinter cell just came out for xbox and it is not a first person shooter...this game is amazing...i have been playing video games for 22 years and have never seen anything like it...

believe you me...i am a sports games kind of guy...and IMO 2k series is the best and it is the best on the XBOX...
