A bit OT here, I'm trying to open an account on Paypal, but if I follow the instructions, I'm supposed to have received a 4-digit member number on my credit card statement next to the initial charge. But on my statement, I have no 4-digit number at all, instead i have something like "123 456 789 12" (of course not the real numbers).

So it's call for help for anybody holding a Paypal account, and especially people from outside the US, maybe there's something here.

Maybe I haven't been very clear, I'm looking to know if people actually received this 4 digit number when they registered, or if they've experienced similar troubles.

if it is a visa card. the number is on the back of the card, right after the number that written on the back, that is the same as the number on the front.

hum... thanks but I'm not sure I'm understanding what you say. Or maybe I haven't understood what Paypal said at all. I just asked for an account, not for a new credit card. So I don't have a credit card to look on the back at. Hmmm... I have a feeling I just didn't get it. For the record, my credit card is Eurocard/Mastercard, not VISA. Not sure if this is helpful.

butt -- Swish City maybe? I see you're a Patron, maybe you used Paypal. If so, any particular problem?

When I signed up for an account several years ago, there was no process like that. They did make a small transfer to my bank account which I had to verify, but nothing related to a credit card. Perhaps this process is only for non-US accounts?

JCS: I think what they may want for verification is a 3 or 4 digit number on the BACK of your card. It should be printed at the end of the signature line.

The reason for asking for it is to verify that you actually have the card in your "hand" and have not scammed the number illegally. The extra 3-4 digits are after your account numer and not part of the account number.

JCS I think rfs is right. Its likely to be asking for the 3-4 digit security number on the back of your credit card. I don't know if you have signed up for Nochex, but they do it differently, where their randomly generated 4 digit number appears on your statement and you can't activate it until you get that number from your bank statement.

I would be extremely surprised if it wasn't one of these ways that Paypal are using. I would guess its the security number, although i can't remember - its been a while since i registered my card with Paypal.

International Accounts - Top Questions

Q: Once I have opened an International PayPal account, what will I need to do to use it?

A: After opening your International account, you will need to add a valid credit card before you may use PayPal to send or receive funds. To complete your membership and lift the sending limit on your account, you must enter your Member Number. For membership confirmation purposes, PayPal will charge your credit card a $1.95 membership fee. The charge will accompany a unique, randomly generated 4 digit Member Number.

Check your online or physical credit card statement. If you have online access to your credit card statement, it usually takes approximately 2-3 business days for the charge to appear, depending on your issuing bank. If you do not have online access to your statement, wait until you receive your physical statement in the mail to check your 4 digit PayPal Member Number. After you have found your Member Number in your credit card statement, you will need to complete your membership.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't, i would check with your bank to see if there's any additional info about your statement, otherwise grill Paypal about it.
