0 Subject: OT - the most difficult fantasy game overall

Posted by: Clach

TSN ultimate hoops is my favourite fantasy games overall, because IMHO is the most difficult to play, the one in which the L(ucky) factor is less rilevant, the one in which ability and competition is hardest.

The weakest point of the game is maybe the number of participants, around 5.000, when there are games with over 100.000, so much more wild competition.

Do you agree or do you think there's a fantasy game (any kind of sport, not only Bball) who is more difficult to play?

I think Fantasy Fishing is easily the hardest game to play. You've got 25 year vets who suddenly stink up the joint and low ranked anglers who come out of nowhere to populate the leaderboard. And sometimes your guys don't even fish! The best way to ensure an active roster is to call up your angler's wife and ask if he's going fishing this weekend...

Golf of "course" (get it golf course)

you just never know more then 1-2 week ahead if they are in or out of the tournaments
making it hard to set up a great roster
then if they make the cut! well most of the big boys do
but can only have 1 to 2 on your roster with the limited cash
don't know how hard the track is set up to play?
weather?
plus im a little bias :)

"is easily the hardest"

Things like that always make me chuckle.

I'd also say it's hardly the easiest.

Of the various TSN games that I have played (Hoops, baseball, football, and golf), I have been the most consistent in Hoops, although there was at least one year when I failed to crack the top 100. Most years I am able to get inside the top 25.

I've been less consistent in baseball, with some great finishes, and some disappointing ones.

I did respectable in golf last year, but my experience is light enough that I don't have a good comparative sense about it yet.

And I've only had one football season that I considered moderately respectable, hovering inside the top 25 for awhile before crapping out near the end.

So for me, football is the most difficult. But think that is because it is the least mathematical. I do better in baseball and hoops because I am more skilled - or perhaps just more diligent - in aspects like pitcher rotation and schedule management.

But for those people who are less adept at (or less patient with) those aspects, I'd expect that Hoops might be relatively difficult.

I've played for about 2 years now (baseball, hockey, hoops). For me, it's hoops. You just cannot make up ground in hoops, IMHO. Not being able to make up significant ground also drives down the fun factor. But, I'll still continue to try...

most anyone can play football - like my brother and roommate and do well. Its pretty much a crapshoot. Basketball and Baseball require more planning and strategy. Not that football doesn't require it too - but picking matchups isn't that difficult and its seems like its pot luck if your reciever is going to get thrown to or not or your defense loses points because their own offense gets a few run back on them or the special teams... I remember a couple years back -Ricky Williams vs. last rated run D in league or Shaun ALexander vs. No.One Run D... obvious choice for those who did the research right? well it obviously didn't turn out that way as Ricky put up a dud and that was one of Shaun's monster Sunday night games.
NOt that luck isn't involved in other sports as well, but I am just using that as an illustration, because my brother didn't know any better and went with Alexander without considering any of this.

You just cannot make up ground in hoops, IMHO.

On dec 24th I was WWR 1,032 with 5 trades. Yesterday, I hit my latest peak at WWR 217.

For me it's football. Every year it feels like I make a couple of bad decisions early on and I simply cannot catch up from there.

More players to take care, more rilevance of some stats (touch down, like goal in soccer), much less game.

If you consider the most difficult game the one with less margin of error, then football is IMHO the most difficult, because an error or a lucky pick have more impact.

On contrary, in a very long competiton like TSN Basketball, where you have to take care of market aspects, schedule, and where stats are usually more predictable, the manager have more power to control the sort of his team.

pd: I'm not talking just TSn games, but any kind of fantasay sport game

Sorry MITH, I take that back. Great run, BTW!

It just seems that way for some reason. Sure, we're rising like crazy (I was 1207 WWR with 5 trades also on that date), but it just seems extremely tough to make up ground when you get to a certain point because most players "should" have the same studs.

This year may be different with roster flexability, though.

Thanks, I'll certainly agree that making up those 800 WWR spots was easier than moving through the next 135 or so to crack the top 100 will be (if I can). But in the past with football (didn't play this past season), I don't think I've ever cracked the top 15%.

The first fantasy game I ever played was Small World Hoops about 6 years ago or so. I finished in the top 100 (about 50). The next year I played again, but I was closer to 200. I haven't played fantasy basketball since but I know that it is my strongest fantasy sport. Baseball comes next and football is always a crapshoot for me. I usually tend to be somewhere around the middle in my leagues. I feel like I don't have as much control in fantasy football as with the other sports.

I only play Fantasy Basketball..this is my third year and my best one so far (sadly). I'm at 411 right now, but I used to be at 85 or so during December.

Football, my favorite sport is the hardest. It's to short of season.

Baseball, I do the best in and I hate baseball.

Basketball, this year should be my best. (I Hope)

I think that, in general, the shorter the season is (in terms of number of games) the harder the game is. At least for me.

No matter which game I play, I tend to make my worst moves at the beginning of the season, because I have a hard gauging who's for real and who's not. As the basketball and baseball season goes on, the moves to make tend to become more obvious than earlier in the season. (There are still some tough decisions to make, just not nearly as many.)

I haven't played football, but I suspect it would be the hardest for me. There's not nearly the consistency, plus I am almost always surprised in the beginning of the football season as to who emerges.

MITH,

I just wanted to thank you for post 8. I didn't think it could be done, but now I'm a day away from cracking the top 100.

See ya on the baseball boards.

I totally agree with your Football thoughts. It comes down to so much rolling of the dice with Football. I would much rather play Hoops.

I feel baseball is the hardest of the sports, simply because it's so long. I'm off to a horrible start, because I haven't been paying attention, but the biggest thing I'm doing is banking trades. Even though I might be 1000 tsnps down already, there's still six more months in the season... I can easily make up that ground with smart pitching selections, if I can hold my attention for that huge length of time. That's why I like hoops the best... long enough that strategery comes into effect, but not too long so that it just drags on.

Isn't the basketball season (24 weeks) and the baseball season (26 weeks) basically the same length? I don't follow the "drags on" comment for baseball.

That may be true GMAN but the number of games played is nearly double that of the NBA which is plenty of time for some serious brain damage.

Vilica's point wasn't about the # of games, simply the length of the season. He has the impression that the basketball season is somehow substantially shorter than the 6 month baseball season. It isn't. Counting the playoffs, it may be longer than the baseball season.

FWIW - I think football is the most difficult, followed by baseball, then basketball. I don't play TSN golf or NASCAR, so I can't comment on those.

BTW - it is Gman15, someone else uses the G-MAN handle.

Gman... that's correct. I guess it seems that the school year appears to go considerably shorter than the summertime... shows you my relative impression of summer vs college. I guess the merit of my comments falls only on the number of games now... just so many that it feels much longer.

I still haven't figured out if the Ultimate game is easier or harder than Basic without buying trades. Guess next year I'll have to play a team in each league to find out for myself.

BTW I Won $50 first place in my friends and family division of the Basic league (which will be donated to Rotoguru) and finished 8th in the Rotoguru Basic League 2nd season.

Looking for an RPS (Rock, Paper, Scissors) fantasy league

(I guess that I'm clueless with my TSN roster... too many uncertainties)

Hoops is by far the most difficult of the big 4 (although football requires the most luck, something I never seem to have). If you get off to a terrible start in hoops, and you haven't saved any trades, it's all over. It's very hard to gain ground on your competition. Furthermore, trades are much more valuable in b-ball than any other sport.

I've always been an agressive trader, and I've had by far my best success in baseball. Since players get points every single night in hoops, you can't afford to have 2-3 guys on your roster who aren't producing or who are injured. In baseball, it's no big deal if one of your hitters goes cold for a few days. That's why I don't mind having 0 trades left in baseball a few days before a trade refresh. You can't afford that risk in basketball, because not only are you going to lose money, you will also lose points to the field. I always end up getting frustrated in hoops because of all the injuries. But I suppose if I was better at conserving trades, I wouldn't have that problem.....

Always choose Rock,

I think Fantasy WWE can be very easy and fun. Except when the rules are twisted against you. Well, you and Mach, but Mach was never really much help anyway.

That paper rock scissors site is hilarious. Kind of like how I picked my opening roster for ultimate.
