I have an on-going problem with my connectivity to the ENTIRE SportingNews Web site (the TSN site). It seems that their web server is very slow in sending me the pages... I am using Road-Runner cable-modem (from NY). It is important to note the following:

1. ALL other web sites that I access are functioning OK
2. The problem with the TSN site persists for more than 2 weeks
3. I usually use IE, but I also tried to access TSN via Netscape and the result was the same
4. This is not a Cookies issue, since TSN sometimes doesn't recognize me

and...

5. I used my good-old dial-up modem connection, the 1-800 number and password of my former company (shhhhhhh...!) ... and -- SURPRISE!!! I managed to surf the TSN well!

I have been exchanging numerous emails with TSN, and I even suggested to come over to their office (in NY, probably)_with my laptop so that they will take a look at it. Unfortunately, they also have no idea what the problem is... Therefore, I was wondering if there is a Web/Network-Guru around that might have an idea what to check/change/etc in order to solve this irritating problem

thanks!!!

I had a similar problem accessing various sites with my cable modem around 6 months ago. Turned out to be a problem with my modem and Adelphia gave me a new one. No more problems after that.

when I had a cable modem last year. Same thing happened to me, all sites worked except TSN. I couldn't even run the standings. When I hooked my computer back up to the DSL line it worked perfectly. The only way I fixed it was by staying with the DSL line.

I have no idea if this would work, but have you tried releasing and renewing your IP address while connected to your cable connection? I don't know if it automatically reassigns you a new IP every time you reconnect to the network, or honestly if that would have anything to do with it. My knowledge of these things is marginal at best. I do know that once, a friend of mine was having trouble accessing a site that was previously an intranet site while on a LAN connection and then went to dialup (from another provider) and was not able to access that website. Following a releasing and renewing of his IP, it seemed to be working correctly on the dialup. I'm not sure what to make of this information, so interpret as you wish. I will now stop rambling.

rage_22: thanks for your input, but as far as I know, I cannot change my IP address ... do you have an idea how to do it?

by the way, maybe I can go through one of the sites that mask my original IP address... is anyone familiar with the site's name (I can't recall it)

smartone,

It might be a problem with the routing between your ISP and whatever company hosts TSN. If you have any technically able friends, you might want to ask them to nuke your network components and rebuild them. I'd also suggest switching out the NIC or to try it with another computer via the same line.

Also, to release/renew your ip depends on your OS. For Win 95/98/ME, goto start->run->winipcfg, select your NIC, and release and renew the ip. For 2k/XP, start->run->cmd->ipconfig /release->ipconfig /renew. This should work if you're behind a router or if you're connected directly to the cable modem.

Vilica: I started with #8 which looks simpler... i did the ipconfig release/renew, but received the same IP address...

re #7: i agree that this is probably the problem. However, you menioned a couple of technical terms that are beyond my understanding: "nuke your network", "switch out the NIC" -- could you kindly explain these terms to a leming... thanks!

Try this site.Enter www.sportingnews.com in the host/URL box and see what it says. This will help determine if a connectivity problem is due to your ISP, the Internet, or the host you are connecting to.link

Check out this site for info on increasing your TCP receive window.( probably not related, but it'll help speed up your overall cable connection)

xpdurmind, this is a very interesting link and I tried to test my connectivity with TSN, and I received the following error:

QOUTE:
Analysis: IP packets are being lost past network: "Colorado Internet Cooperative Association NETBLK-COOP-NET" at hop 21. There is insufficient cached information to determine the next network at hop 22. Node 199.45.130.2 at hop 21 in network "Colorado Internet Cooperative Association NETBLK-COOP-NET" reports "The destination network is unreachable".

I can email you to entire routing scheme if you think that it is useful.

I understand that there is a routing problem, do you think that TSN or Road-Runer should take care of this?

Many many thanks for any suggestion!!!

smartone,

Didn't really want to explain in depth those terms because there's always a little bit of trial and error, and if you mess up one part you might not be able to get it back. However, I was a bit dense in one thing... switch out your NIC... its just the card where you plug the ethernet cable in. If you have a spare card, you can plug it into your computer, and test out your connectivity. The second part, nuking your network components, just means that you would goto your network settings, where all the tcp-ip bindings and such are saved, and uninstall/reinstall them all. But if you don't do it correctly, you might not be able to get back on the net, which is why I stipulated that you could ask a technically-able friend, if possible.

On the subject of routing schema, the most likely answer is that one of the peering routers between your connection and TSN's webserver is being packeted or otherwise flooded, and that is something neither TSN nor nyc.rr.com can fix. Oh, and the visualroute response you got at hop22 is normal, given the hostname of the server... NETBLK... I would assume that it is there to block such queries.

One final suggestion to do is goto, in IE, Tools, Internet Options, Delete Temporary Internet Files, and see if that helps any. You might also try running Ad-Aware 6 (Website), just download from the list of mirrors, install, close all open windows, run it, 'check for updates now', download the updated ref files, start, default scan, hit next, and let it scan for spyware.

That's all I can think of now, its a bit difficult to remotely troubleshoot the problem, which is why I think TSN would want you to bring it in to them. Btw, just remembered that you said you had a laptop, so scratch all the stuff I said about switching out the NIC... not much I can suggest as there's lots of ways that laptops can be connected, which is also why I don't really want you to go around uninstalling/reinstalling network components blindly.

If closing, after this tome, from the way you seem to have tested things, I'd have to say its most likely a peering problem somewhere between the rr routers and the tsn ones, which rr might be able to do something about, but tsn not at all.

OK, here's an OT within this OT.

My WinXP Home Edition has now gone crazy and has replaced English text with something closer to Wingdings. Even at the user selection screen my name is now something like circle-square-triangle-blob. Tried Safe Mode, same thing. Tried WinXP install CD, same thing. I can only guess at what things say since I can't read Martian. Any fix suggestions?

Bungers,
Start->Control Panel->Regional Options, see if you can change anything there. Can't help you if those things are unreadable, as I don't have an XP install handy to reference. Hope this helps.

Vilica, thanks. I think I will have another XP user be on the phone with me to tell me the English version of exactly where those options are...and how they translate into my Wingding/Martian language. :)

Smartone, I get the same routing problem notice from Visual Route as you do. And my access to TSN is fine. So I question whether it's a routing problem.

As I said before, call your Cable provider and ask them to bring a new modem. This is not a problem that TSN can or will solve. And I bet it's a problem with your cable service, not your computer.

smartone,

I haven't encountered this particular problem before, but it sounded to me that the packets are being dropped along the way to your system, but it also could be a number of other reasons.

The visual tracking web site tracks the hops to that web site's server. Everyone will probably get the same results. I was serching for something simple you can do instead of having to explain a tracert or a TTL and how to interpert the results.Sorry.

The way I see it, to rule out your system(cable modem/network settings) ask a neighbor if they experience problems connecting to TSN(It could be your node), then ask your cable co.Just inform your internet cable provider of the problem you're having. If you call them enough they might come out and look at your system for free.

Bungers, English (United States) is the 25th from the top. Just count down.

Mike D and Vilica,

Thanks for the help. I fixed it by first going to my desktop and right clicking, then Properties for Display Options. Went to Advanced, only had two fonts to choose from, they were named something like "fixedys" and "system". Of course, all these choices were gibberish, so I guessed from memory where Properties and Advanced were. Changed all possible existing features fonts to the "system" one. This made about half my stuff convert back to the regular alphabetic letters. Then, able to see much more, I changed the desktop style to "Windows Classic", applied it, and all was back to normal. Finally, I switched back to "Windows XP" style, and that was it.
