0 Subject: #1 Pick: Would You Draft Lebron?

If you were the GM and your team had the #1 pick, would Lebron automatically be your selection?

It's all but certain he is going pro (he played in 3 All Star games, which by NCAA rules means he can't play College basketball for one season). David Aldridge said the other night that any GM in the league who didn't select Lebron would likely be fired if his selection ever bottomed out (with the possible exclusion of Jerry West). If you choose Lebron and he tanks no one can really fault you.

Obviously your decision might be based on who you already have, but for the most part any team in the lottery could use him.

Would you select him? Or might Carmelo or Milicic?

I would probably roll the dice and take Carmelo. I believe he is far more prepared for the NBA right now and in the long run will be a better player.

If Anthony from Syracuse leaves early I'd pick him first, if not I'd pick James.

Carmelo
Took it strong to some very good players this year!
While James is only going up vs High school guys. Havent watch him enough to know.
Not to say in 3-4 years James wont be the man.

which ever team drafted James he'll leave as soon as he finishs with the rookie contract (and become really good). Who really wants to stay at Denver/Cleveland? Carmelo will have more immediate impact for sure. Raptor bound?

Seems that if you wanted Anthony or Milicic, you could trade down for the 2nd or 3rd pick, but I'm not sure if all teams would go for that. I can't think of any lottery teams that need a center badly enough to spend the pick on Darko, but theoretically if the Bucks or Magic were picking, they need a center much more than a slasher. Does anybody know if you're allowed to trade a pick straight up for a player?

I'd take Darko, but I think pressure from the fans will force the GM to take Lebron first.

I think that it'll really depend on who gets the pick. Obvioussly he will help many teams but let's say that the raps get the pick, I will be blown away if they take him when they can trade him for players or picks. If it's Denver or some one like that then as the above comment said, they won't have much of a chance of keeping him once his contract is up. I would try to trade my pick for Darko who is supposed to be amazing and get some nice compensation with it. I mean LeBron will be yours for only 3 years anyway. (is the rookie contract 3 years?)

One GM said that many GMs feel that Darko is better but don't have the job security to take anyone other than James.

I have one question. The critics say the one thing wrong with lebron is hes gotta work on his jumpshot. WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN??? That means to me he gets points on layups/dunks and can pass. i CAN hit layups am I half as good as Lebron. Unless ur 7'6 isnt a jumpshot pretty important??

Bron's jumpshot is probably better than yours :)

In any case, it's not terrible, it's just not that great.

Darko is not a center, he's a small forward at best in the NBA. Think KG.

2 questions.

First off, is there anyone that is the running for 1,2 and 3 other than these three?

Second q is that I was wondering if anyone knew of a site that does some in depth stuff on the rookies?

I doubt at 7'0 he'll be a SF. KG and Dirk started out as SF's but grew into DOMINANT PF's. I expect Darko will do the same. I think Darko will be more in the Dirk mold than KG though.

Don't know who to compare Lebron to. I've never seen a guy his size that passes so well and jumps so high. He's very fundamentally sound, save his jump shot which needs work to get to an NBA level. He can jump out of the gym and his passing is dynamite. I don't know how good Darko is but Lebron can play. That Carmello over Lebron stuff is a sham. Lebron is the deal. How many kids out of high school have NBA bodies? Not many.

That web site was great. Thanks. And on it they compare alot of the players to who they resemble in the nbs and they give LeBron a Magic type style. Hey, being compared to magic, how is he not gonna go #1. Besides, I'm a raps fan and want Darko for us cause we need the size!

King James has a mean (good) jumpshot. Whoever said he doesn't is wrong. He's "as can't miss as can't miss gets" -- forget where that quote came from. :p

James #1

Why? $$$$$ for the team who chooses him initially. Even if he doesn't become one of the best players in the game, he will still make the team a lot of money off of merchandise and tickets sales.

Vince Carter has done the same thing. Sell a lot of tickets but not do much for his team.

Didn't he make 11 3's in one game earlier this year? That's not too bad.

Even if his jumpshot isn't great, he's still just 18 and has plenty of time to improve. If he has the desire, he will become the best player in the league in about 5 years.

123, there's at least 20 people you could say that about, probably more. And Razor, why say Darko will be like Dirk? Because they're both white? Everything I've read about Darko says that he's not soft at all, and plays hard D.

Razor, what position does KG play? Last I checked he was a SF. Dirk too for that matter. They may both play the PF on occasion on the offensive end, but when it comes to them guarding true PF's on the defensive end they usually defer to someone else. Dirk can fill it up, but he's TERRIBLE defensively and by all accounts Darko will be better in that aspect. He's just not heavy enough yet to be playing the 5.

Comparing KG's and Dirk's defense and saying they are similar is an interesting point of view.

KG has a huge impact on the defensive end and can easily guard all 3s and 4s in the NBA.

Dirk usually guards the PFs because he is too slow to guard the SFs (see Wells, Bonzi when the Mavs played the big frontline with both LaFrentz and Bradley). On Saturday he guarded Divac a lot of the time.

Dirk and KG are PF's. They play against opposing PF's on both ends of the floor more often than not.

As for comparing Dirk and Darko, who's the best inside/outside player in the NBA at 7'0"? Nowitzki. I say Darko might be like Dirk that because they are both tall Europeans from what I hear, can stroke it. Darko was born in 1985. 1985! He's 17 years old so for him to add 30 lbs. of bulk won't be a problem. Every clip I've seen of him is in the paint. Combine that with the fact that he can hit from outside, you can see why I think he'll be like Nowitzki. He'll have the ability to defend 4's and possibly 5's on a regular basis though, unlike Nowitzki, due to his size. Darko will start off at the 3 and grow into the 4, possibly 5, just like most undersized post players who come into the league.

I think I will change my mind here. After reading several different articles, and as a GM I would have to pick Lebron first. I didn't realize how much of a money maker this kid is going to be. Carmelo is still a good pick and might just be able to fill the stadiums up as well. Time will tell.

I saw the HS slam dunk contest and Lebron can fly like no one else. Each dunk had his head above the rim and on one he threw the ball up and had to wait on the ball as he was above the rim. The kid can fly. 40 inches easy. His leaping ability alone will bring people in the stands. Then he signs the 90 mil contract (largest in history). He will fill the stands and Cleveland is crazy to not take him #1.

That 90M was his deal with Nike. It is the largest in history for a rookie. Is that what you meant? It is certainly not the largest shoe, or even Nike contract, in history. Jordan gets 20M a year for the next 20 years. Tiger, 100M over 5.

Largest for a rookie is what I meant. I heard them say that it was the largest contract ever and I assume that means for a rookie cause both Jordan and Tiger easily make more than that.

RE: Post 20

Are there really 20 of these 6'8, 240 lb, freakishly athletic 18 year olds that made 11 3's in a game this year?

I would take Lebron without a doubt. He is the most talented player in the draft, and had the best high school stats than anyone ever to play the game. He can score, pass, and do it all. Plus, the Cavs have the #1 pick. Taking the "hometown hero" will automatically increase ticket sales and help there situation. You could possibly take Lebron for that reason only, but I believe he will be a dominant player in his career.
