0 Subject: Next year's surprises

Posted by: Ace forever - [842884] Tue, May 13, 2003, 04:07

What team will take the next step next year and what player will take the next step?

I think that the clippers will do well in signing some talent in the off season and contend for the playoffs. Houston will make the playoffs and Golden State will contend with them. The Raps will obvioussly be alot better and make the playoffs.

Players to make a jump will be Yao, Wagner, Andre Miller, Vince, Gooden, and Amare. There will be others of course but thats my list for now.

I'm curious to know what the rest of you think.

Post away!

the knicks will make the playoffs. I don't think Miller will get much better than 14 and 7.

Manu playing a full year will be much better. And San Antonio with a FA addition should be much stronger than this year (scary, isn't it?).

Utah will leave open a playoff spot for Houston in the West, and the east will depend a lot on the draft and the FA movement.

Finley for Brand straight up. You heard it here first, or second.

If Karl Malone goes to the Lakers will there really be any point in playing the season out? (And I'm a Kings fan.)

By the way, unless they change owners in Clipper land, things will stay exactly the same down there. They have some key extensions they have to offer and I doubt they'll get them done.

No way Malone ends up in LA. All bluster. LA doesn't want him. I believe Malone will stay in Utah to get guaranteed minutes/shots to break the scoring record.

LA will look to add PJ Brown and/or Scottie Pippen. And win their 5th title in a row.

If they do Finley for Brand, what will happen to Q? Seems that there would be no place for him then. Trade bait?

Miller will definitely be better...18 & 9.

San Antonio is winning this year and after they knab Kidd they will be a 70+ win team next year and win it again

Maggette is off to Da Bulls and that will leave Q open. Odom is gone and that is where finley would fit in.

If San Antonio wins this year why would they spend the max on Kidd? They'll have Tony Parker at a much lower cost and one more year's experience and will be able to chase other FA's on the market.

I think Malone wants a title more than the scoring record so if he'll sign for the exception they'll take him and make a run at the crown again and then worry about filling his role the next year. PJ will cost much more than the 4.5 exception.

Finley at the 3? No chance that happens and if it does, no chance he competes.

Tayshaun Price will be a breakout player next year. He's proving that he can play in high pressure situations, and the coaches won't forget that.

Alonzo Mourning will sign with the BUCKS. And Payton will resign with them which will make them a serious contender in The East.

I think when you look at teams of the future. The first team you have to look at our the teams that are already good and are still going to get better. First San Antonio, they lose robinson and they lose Steve Smith's contract. I would be shocked if Kidd comes Tony Parker is 20 years old. And is getting better. So after resigning Duncan the main priority is probably to find someone to replace Robinson at center. I personally think Duncan can play center, which would enable the spurs to go after Jermaine Oneal or Brand. But its looks like the spurs fixed on keepin Duncan at the 4. So I was thinking that the next best option is to go after Brad Miller other than Olowakandi he is the best offensive center that is available. Detroit is the second team that you have to look at. You can make a case that two players that should be starting are coming off the bench. Prince and Okur. Plus If the Grizzlies do not get the 1 pick they can get a top 10 pick, and quite possibly the superstar that they need. The surprise next year will be the Chicago Bulls. I say this because next year Eddy Curry will the best big man (not just center) in the east. He started to break out at the end of this season. And was playing great not to mention the Bulls backcourt of Crawford and Williams has the potential to be one of the best backcourts in the NBA. Not to mention jalen rose average 22 a game last year. Expect them to make the playoffs

I always expect alot from the Bulls and they end up playing shockingly bad. I mean, I thought they were going to be good THIS year!

That said, I think the Grizz will improve greatly. They set a francise record in wins last year with Wright and Dicky being hurt most the year. Look for M. Miller to get some good practice time and West to draft well -- could be a great year for the Grizz. (Bias review)

I expected the bulls to be good too. The reason I think they did not do well is because their two best players were not starting. Jamal Crawford and Eddy Curry. In the second half of the season you will notice the bulls made a vast improvement. When Crawford and Curry were put in the starting lineup. Next yar barring any trades we will start off with a lineup of Jay Will, Jamal Crawford, Jalen Rose, Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry. Eddy Curry is the key, he is the best big man in the east. Now whether he plays like it, remains to be seen. I also think the grizzlies will be improved but it hurts that they do not have there pick. I doubt that the Grizzlies will get the first pick. But I do think that Jason Williams will be a top 3 point guard next year.

Eddy Curry = best big man in the east? You mean he of the 10 pts. and 4 rebs. per game? Huh? And just what have Crawford and Williams done to make you think they have the ability to be the best backcourt in the NBA? They're both PG's so who's gonna play the 2? Neither one of them can shoot to save his life. It sounds like you're a fan of the Bulls Avenger, but I'd say you have another 2 years (minimum) before you see the playoffs.

Kidd
Marbury
Payton
Cassell
Bibby
A. Miller
B. Davis
Nash

All of these guys are still better then Jason Williams.

I am with Patjams.....I was a bulls fan and still am at heart but in no way will they even contend for the playoffs next year. Look for them to move Chandler as they like Curry being the hometown boy and there are some teams that could like to grab up Chandler and pay for it. I can see Golden State moving someone to Chicago for Chadler....try to team up the Duke boys in Bulls red maybe. Jalen will be moved with Robinson's heafty contract and it is another rebuilding year. I do see them contending after next year though...I'll give you that!

You guys don't understand. Eddy Curry stats are really deceiving. If you look at his numbers for the year, they are not going to look that good. But a little after the allstar break is when he started to get playing time. He got better and better and in the month of April he averaged 20 points. I don't think it is that radical to say he is the best big man in the East. The East is horrible! The only good big men in the East are Jermaine O'neal, Antoine Walker and Kenyon Martin. He will give the Bulls the best low post presence in the East. Im not really sold that Jay Williams will be a great player. But I know Jamal Crawford will he is nasty. I don't know where you guys are from but unless you live in the Chicago area, Or have NBA League Pass you would not he also was not getting much time in the first half of the season and then thrived in the second half. Rose has already established himself as one of the best scorers in the league. And Tyson Chandler is a ferocious rebounder and excellent shot blocker. Plus the Bulls will have a top 10 draft pick. The east is way to weak and the Bulls have too much talent not to make the playoffs. Mark my words Eddy Curry will be an allstar next year.

Here are some guys I will be looking to get on the cheap next year...

Tayshaun Prince
Al Harrington
Jamal Crawford
Eddy Curry
Tyson Chandler
Marcus Fizer (he was coming on strong before his injury too, but watch in preseason to test the rotation waters on these guys)
Andre Miller- should rebound to have an impressive season, assuming some coaching/team improvements
Jerome Moiso
Tractor Traylor
Mehmet Okur
Jon Bender (every year, I am still cautiously optimistic...)
Jason Richardson and Kwame Brown both proved they have the abilities to be great at this level, but both were inconsistant and doing worse as the season progressed, which should keep their prices down for next year...
Croshere on another team could be good
Kenny Thomas seemed more consistant down the stretch.
Amare Stoudemire should stay at a good price. I cannot imagine them making him over 7 mil, and anything under that will be a steal.

Well, that is enough for now...

I agree with Avengers. I am a Spurs fan and I see no reason they would go after Kidd. Tony is very young, getting better, and has a VERY bright future. Notice how cluch he is in the playoffs? San Antonio's first priority will to go after a center, while Duncan could play it I think they would prefer to have somebody else. Thinking: Somebody has to foul Shaq and it can't be our best player. I would love for them to add an Jermaine or somebody of that nature, but I really don't see that happening. They will probably pick up a large stiff. We will see...either way...with the BEST player in the game (TIMMY D!) the Spurs will go b2b if they are healthy. ;-)

I also like the Rockets, and I think they will not only slide into the playoffs, but secure a spot other than #8. Get ready for a Francis-Yao dynasty! They will win one in the semi year future.

Even though I'm up north I'm a huge Rockets fan. I love Yao and Franchise. I think that they need a nice power forward though. I'm not convinced that Griffin is the man. I see him being an Horry type guy without the clutch ability. Play a bit of 4 when needed but more of a big 3. If they can maybe trade Taylor and his stupid contract for a nice big man, watch out next year even. I'm not saying that they can win next year but the ball will go through Yao alot more next year and look for him to be a 20 and 10 guy. Combine that with Franchise and Mobley, they've got a nice thing going there.

Rubalamp-- Jerome Moiso? The guy is 7 feet tall and weighs 38 pounds. Id be wary of expecting a whole lot from this guy.
Also, if the Bulls trade Jay Williams and the 7 pick for the #3 pick and take Anthony, they will be nasty this year.

Crawford
Rose
Anthony
Chandler
Curry

Thats a legit line up. Tall backcourt, Improving Frontcourt. Chemistry always a question with Rose and Crawford in the same locker room.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

My thought are that Jay Williams is 10 times better already than Melo ever will be, so Jay + 7th pick for Melo just looks crazy to me. I'm still convinced that Melo's bubble will burst before the draft. Him cancelling his Pistons workout is just the beginning. Denver doesn't want him, I'd bet they'll trade down, even if it happens just on draft day.

As for Moiso, I agree with Rubalamp, but it'll depend on which team he lands on next year. THis year, minutes had to be distributed between Magloire, PJ Brown, Campbell, Traylor and him, if he can find a less crowded frontcourt he'll do fine.

Yeah, I wouldnt touch a couple of those Rubalamp.

Kenny Thomas - Can't play, barely had decent stats in Houston when he was the ONLY post threat. (Unless for some reason you count Cato as a threat)

Tractor Traylor - Old and fat. Never going to be a starter because he cant deal with the minutes.

Marcus Fizer - Trade bait, if he's not gone he's going to be buried.

Okur - No time, with DET drafting Mili, even less time in the post.

Croshere - Van Horn part 2 with less ability.

.. :)

Okay, some guys I think will breakout..

Caron Butler - Solid last season, maybe they're give him some help at either PG or in the post.

Stromile Swift - If Wright goes, or they give him more minutes like the end of last year. He's ready.

Michael Dickerson - If he comes back this year he still has the game and will start.

Antoine Walker - New conditioning coach, terrible post season. I think he'll be back to the 3D machine of 2 years ago.

Carlos Boozer - Alot of new shooters, alot of new rebounds.

Nene - Howard moves? Only post threat besides Cotton and who knows how long before he'll get hurt? In preseason?

Raul Lopez - Second coming of Stockton? Or will Mark Jackson take the helm?

Memphis fan-- Great Picks!!! Man those must of been really hard. You basically picked people that had great seasons for over half of the previous season, way to go out on a limb. Outside of Dickerson and Lopez, I had every single player on your list on my roster at some point last year. I would not consider any of those sleepers at all. Boozer!?!, come on, DUH!!!

All of those guys will be overpriced at the beginning of the season, anyway. The people on my list were people that may have new addresses and could produce more. I would put money that Croshere could be a better player than Van Horn. If Bird would have stayed the Pacers coach, he could have been an all-star...at least in the East where Brad Miller can become an all star.

Okur...come on, go read articles about why the previous coach of the year was fired and you may see that Okur and Prince being on the bench too often contributed to it...Tractor is only fat, not too old...Kenny Thomas has shown flashes of crazy skill, multiple games of 20 rebounds shows some skill. He could become more consistant.

Crap, you have Walker on your list?!? DUH!!!!

In Short, your list sucks and you have no balls. (I mean that mostly as a joke, but I stand by my list)

LOL! I wouldn't say any of the people on my list had a good year short of Butler and Nene.

But.. It's silly to start guessing the next 500k sleeper because we all know that 99.9% of TSN sleepers are a direct result of a torn acl or blown knee by a starter.

And you're list wasn't out on any limbs either bud. :)Al Harrington? He's been on the sleeper list for the last 3-4 years. Tyson Chandler and Curry? Andre Miller? Bender? Kwame? AMARE!

I think you managed to name top 4 picks the 2001 draft. And gee. Amare, never would have guessed.

I left Gasol for your sleeper list...

I mean Hell you put an all star on your list...

Yep, Amare, but note that I put he isn't a sleeper, but I think he will be a player that will be vital if he is UNDER 7 MIL...

I mentioned people that fell off the radar throughout the year (namely Kwame, Andre, Fizer)

Harrington, Bender, and Croshere are all people that if there were big shake-ups with the roster any of them have the potential to be huge. I live in Indiana...

Oh, well, take what you want. My thoughts...later. Memphis, I mean no disrespect. I really like reading what you put on here. Are we going to set up a draft in August again?
