0 Subject: RotoGuru Invitational Hoops Challenge

Posted by: Guru
- [330592710] Fri, Sep 05, 2003, 19:59

This fall, I'm planning to organize and promote a Roto Hoops league. This league will have 10-12 managers, and those managers will be selected and invited based on a number of criteria, including:
1. demonstrated past success in fantasy hoops
2. value provided through this forum
3. respect shown by other forum users
4. GuruPatron status

While I do not plan to restrict managers to GuruPatrons, they will have a big advantage, and it is conceivable that all managers will be GuruPatrons. That will be my call.

I have a few people in mind to invite already, but please feel free to suggest names of people that you feel would be strong competitors who meet as many of the listed criteria as possible.

I have not yet worked out the details, but I think we will use the TSN Draft & Trade platform to administer the league. Invited managers will not be charged anything to participate - TSN has tentatively agreed to provide a complimentary league for this purpose.

Scoring will use the traditional roto-style ranking system, probably using the following 8 categories:
Percentages: FG%, FT%
Totals: 3 pt, reb, assists, steals, blocks, points

The draft will take place on this forum during a few weeks in October. It will be a "slow" draft, and all managers will be expected to provide a brief rationale for each of their picks. During the season, league standings will be tracked and highlighted at this site.

Nothing is yet cast in stone, so if you have thoughts on how this should be organized, structured, administered, promoted, tracked, etc., please put your ideas here. If this works well, I would plan to continue it for other sports, possibly to include some form of four-sport competition as well.

Excellent idea. I look forward to following the progress. No slight to any of the many great players in this forum, but I'd enjoy follwoing teams by Dave R, blackjackis21, and Ref

Back-patting aside, some (other) names that come to mind for me would include rfs, jedman, Tosh, The Bandwagon, JCS and Clach.

No thoughts on the peculiars right now, but perhaps later.

I love the idea - can't imagine whittling down to 10-12 people - good luck Guru!

Dang. I read the thread, think of 6 names, and you guys already listed them.

D Dawkins seems to kick butt every year.

This is a great idea. I agree with bj21 that it will be tough to whittle down (but fun I'm sure).

I Love that idea if I have a shot in hell in getting in. Reminds me of the ESPN Fantasy Football leagues. I liked the scoring by categories. Someone like Rodman was actually a viable option to boost your Boards. I miss that but felt ESPN was not giving away Jack for prizes. The shirts just weren't doing it for me I guess. LOL

Rules still to be determined, but assuming the league software can accommodate (and I'm sure it will), there will be some form of games played limit.

As I said, planning is still in its infancy. I'm just soliciting ideas for managers and ideas for setup during the formative stages.

The primary motiviation for using TSN (instead of Yahoo) is that I hope TSN will allow me to link the league standings for everyone to see. I don't believe Yahoo allows non-participants to view the league standings page. (CMIIW)

TSN will undoubtedly go through some early growing pains, but I think it will provide greater flexibility in publicizing results. We'll see.

I haven't made a final decision on this, however.

I like the nominations of Dave R, blackjackis21, Ref, Jedman, Clach, Dawkins, and of course the Guru.

Another idea based post #3 would be a minor league type division. A second tier type league with the winner receiving an automatic invite to the big leagues for the following year? Would be a good way for some of us who aren't as strong to improve our game against decent competition and earn a shot to play with the big boys.

my thought is that nominating yourself shouldn't really count. Typically managers who are top of the line will get the nod from someone else. Although I guess its all Guru's call I am thinking everyone nominating themselves is probably wasting their time.

If necessary I could probably run a B league. Not sure I would want that to be an open league either though, because there is nothing worse than a dead team or 10.

I know Shelby is still around as I play yahoo leagues with him, but probably like myself just reads the forum more than posts anymore. My interest wanes until hoops rolls around anyway. I see many good names already listed above. Most of them are all too familar as they are the managers I have battled the past few seasons in the Rotoguru's Own divisions. Guru, Bandwagon, KB8ers, Species, DaveR always seemed to be right there ahead of me no matter what. I'll throw out a honorable mention to Mike D as well since our teams battled for a Yahoo league title last season in hoops and his team just edged mine out at the end. Just had too many good players - darn you!

Yahoo will do just fine for a second league. I understand Guru's desire to have his league linked for all to see, but a second league wouldn't have that need, and there would be no reason to pay for tsn. Really I'm not sure why tsn charges for roto leagues - I'm still failing to see what they offer that yahoo doesn't. And I like the idea about a winner of a second league getting promoted next year, but at the same time, that would require somebody to decide who gets accepted to said second league. More than 10-12 people will want to do it, and it would mean Guru having to make twice as many decisions. I think I'll just make a league for my 3-4 friends that play, and advertise the remaining 8 spots here closer to season time, so don't sweat it if you don't get chosen for these leagues... there will be plenty of competitive leagues out there for you.

What intrigued me about the league was the commitment of the players. The names that I see put forth are all names that I recognize from the posts. There were maybe 3 people in my league last year that really got inot it. I'm not sure if my abilities in fantasy sports are up to the challenge but I would like to play with players that check it daily and give advice on these sites and everything. That is kinda where I am right now and I hope that others of you are in the same boat as me. Maybe if some of you are then we can do somehting along the lines of simply entering our teams into the same divisions to get that competition. As of now I do not have any divisions for my ultimate teams and would love to move into a division with people like you guys. Let me know anything you can about this.

Without question there will be Yahoo leagues formed from the Gurupies here. Typically that adds a lot of fun and competitiveness to any league.

I agree with Ace (Dave) that it is great to see so many names and interest. Guru's league of 10-12 managers (see post 1) will come nowhere near encompassing them all. That obviously isn't the intent of it though.

Hard to believe that round ball is so close. I can almost smell the hardwood.

Accidently hit basketball instead of baseball and saw this thread. I'm interested. I may only roto leagues this year as I'm starting to get burnt out in TSN's format, but I never get tired of roto leagues. I love the aspect of like-minded managers who understand how valuable trading can be to improve both teams. So I'd be interested in playing in this league.

As far as nominations go, there are well more than a dozen now that are some of the best players around, but there are some people from our 20 team and 24 team leagues that are top notch roto players too that have yet to be mentioned. Some of those include, StL Cards, Bandwagon, Peter N, Pistol Pete, Tosh, AP10, AZD (man there are so many others that I'm forgetting that I'll be upset with myself later) and others.

I'll stick 0.02 in here. I'd like to see each owner be required [encouraged?] to post a synopsis (sp?) of that's going on with their team/league bi-weekly. Let's face it, people are interested in the line of thought and why certain moves were made (or not made).

So explanation of all the trades would be needed? With some of our trades rfs, that could be difficult. ;)

Seriously, detailed discussion about the league should be a must, a la some prior leagues in this and other sports. And on a somewhat regular basis. We often see this during drafting, but with little to no follow up.

Hey MikeD, if you end up in this league I'd like to get the commentary from the person trading with you. I want to know how you can convince people to give you so much for so little! ;) I also enjoyed our football league last year even though my team was bad, but doing the weekly previews was fun. It was tough though coming up with the commentary on the many ways my team could lose that week. I would have started it up again this year, but I already had too many teams to worry about. I'm sure we'll end up in a hoops league together whether it's one of these or a Yahoo league. I'm more than ready for hoops to start again!

I've been quiet lately, but I have been diligently working on a list of invitees. The list of names presented here has been helpful.

As I expected, coming up with a list of 12 invitees is very difficult. There are some names that are easy. But there are clearly more than 12 Gurupies who are demonstrably qualified, and I am disappointed that some will have to be left out - at least this time around. Hopefully, those who are not invited will not take is as a personal affront.

Assuming this doesn't blow up somehow (and I don't expect that), I would plan to continue it for at least baseball and football. Hockey is also possible, although I would not be a participant, which could make it more difficult to coordinate. Assuming for the moment that I want to avoid overlap between the 3 major sports (hoops, baseball, football), are there some people who were nominated above who might prefer to play baseball or football rather than hoops. If you play hoops, you will most likely not be invited for either of the other two sports unless I have trouble filling those leagues.

Also, although my initial intent was to ahave a 12 team hoops league, I am considering expanding it to 14 or 15 teams. If I were to do that, each team would probably have a slightly smaller roster, although I haven't yet formally determined the roster configuration requirements.

The upside of a larger league is more participants. The downside is that each player on your roster takes on heightened significance, and an injury becomes that much more crippling. But with 29 NBA teams, a 14-15 team fantasy league doesn't seem absurd.

Any feedback on either of these considerations?

A slightly bigger league makes sense, as you said, because of the number of NBA teams and people that get playing time. Rosters could still be of decent size as well.

Regarding the other sports, nice way to involve more Gurupies----by using different players for each sport (where possible, which shouldn't be too hard).

Guru 59:

Just an observation based on the deep league that Ref & I run, I'd expect that the more owners you get, the more conservative play will be. The fewer owners and there would be mnore agressive play.

The reason being that as the top tier talent is spread out, you have tougher decisions to make when it comes to trades. For example, can you trade a good F/C for a stud G? If there are more options available on your bench or on the WW, perhaps you can, but if the league is deeper, you might not go that route because the "risk" is too high.

I'm not stating an opinion, just making an observation about how I think # of owners might impact playing style.

I appreciate being considered for this league, but I have to pass. I'm still debating whether or not to play TSN. My business is requiring way more time now and I don't see that changing anytime soon. The business climate in California is pretty tough right now. I've never done a roto-style league and I would not want to be in a league with all top notch players and just drag it down.
