I'm not trying to nag, but at a rate of 7 hrs. per pick we would only get through 1 round every 3 days. With 2.5 rounds down and 10.5 to go, that means the draft would end arond October 13. Personally I'm hoping we can get through a round a day minimum. So please, if you won't be around for several hours and your pick is coming up, try and leave a queue with someone. I realize sometime there are unexpected circumstances and some have more/less frequent access than others... but just as a general rule. And I'm not directing this at talonted necessarily either, he was quick with his first 2 picks... it's all good. Just a global request.

I'm guessing he did a search on "Miller", but it's listed as "Dre". You can't assume a last-name search will work. Shaq, K-Mart, Toine, AI, etc.... there are a lot of guys with nicknames or abbreviated names. However, he IS listed as Miller on the roster grid page. which also has the advantage of allowing you to do your check by position.

Blooki:
LOL! Funny thing is, I almost took Lewis. Reason Szczerbiak is taken so high is because of his %'s, he's a deadly shot, and not much of anything has changed as far as the starting lineup in MIN. He's also a SG (according to Yahoo) which is a hard possition to fill in late rounds. Id expect near identical numbers, not to mention his contract is up soon I believe, so maybe he'll have some added motivation. Most people are gaging their picks based on ESPN's rankings. Which is pretty helpful, but not always the last word on my decision.. but it made me consider him when otherwise I wouldn't.
ESPN Ranks (as they finished last year)
Hopefully I'll be able to trade away one of my pairs either before or after the season has started.

I doesn't seem people are drafting by the ESPN ratings, for example, Payton and Barry rated 5 and 7 (ha!) went 19 and 21 (reasonable). I mean, of course the draft is going to resemble it somewhat, we all know who the top players are, but it seems people are making their own evaluations. I know I'm not, and wouldn't recommend it... Webber @ 36? Shaq @ 41!?!? And in a keeper league, people obviously passed on guys like Malone and Stockton in the earlier rounds. I think people are mostly using their own player evaluations (and rightly so).

Shaq is at 41 because he's not a good roto player. Webber is so low because he missed half the year last season. Older guys however need to be taken into consideration, as they're not factored into the equation. Payton and Barry are both stud roto guys. :)) Reason why I could let either pass.
|

Nice thing about ESPN, is it's all based on numbers as they were last year. Bad part is, it's numbers they had LAST year. So, its only good if they play like they did, or close. But at least its not some random basketball guru guessing who he thinks is better. And you'll always have sleepers emerge from the lower ranks. I figured most people were using it, because the draft seems to follow it pretty liberaly, and it has been posted in previous drafts.

Shaq is most definitely a good roto player. Being weak in one area (FTs) is MUCH more than compensated for by his strengths in so many other areas. Health issues aside, last year he averaged a couple more points, .6 less TOs and a much better FG% than Tim Duncan... a couple less boards, .7 less assist, .5 less block and much worse FT%. I'm not saying he's better than Duncan, but their stats are close, and I would definitely take him top 10 (not top 5)... even with the health issues! Having stats that are comparable to the consensus #1 fantasy player does not translate to "not a good roto player". He's only weak in FTs, a price most are more than willing to pay to get those high stats in other categories.
As for Webber... last 5 seasons... 71, 42, 75, 70, and 54 games. I can deal with anything in the 70s... he only had 2 years where he missed a significant portion of the season. Barry had decent numbers last year, but what about the year before? He's had as many health issues as Webber in past seasons, with less than 70 games 4 of his 7 years in the league.

Well, personally, while I DO think you are being genuine in that you find the ratings helpful, you also seem to be hyping Barry so that someone else will overpay to trade for him, thinking he's a lock to be a top-20 player when if you really look at his career (or even first 2 seasons with Seattle) he becomes a lot less attractive.
FWIW, you claim that he wasn't a starter before (as if that's the difference in his stats), but that claim is false. 3 seasons ago in 99-00 he started 74 games, and his pts/bds/asts were lower (and 34 mins vs. 37 mins last year, so it's not because he didn't have playing time).
Then, 2 seasons ago (00-01), he was slated as the starter but he couldn't stay healthy enough. They did start him in 20 games, but he missed 15 because of injury. The other 47 games he came off the bench because he wasn't in good enough shape to start.
Oh, and by the way, 4 years ago in Chicago he was also slated as a starter, and started 30 of the 37 games that he was healthy enough to play in. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying he sucks, but he HAS been a starter and his numbers were not as good as his career year last year, he has had more than his share of injury problems, and thus he is nowhere near the #7 rating ESPN gives him. Just my .02.

Your wrong Doug.
99-00 80 games played, 74 games started 00-01 67 games played, only 20 started
01-02 his obviously good year, was only 3 PPG and less than 1 REB better than 99-00. not much of a difference IMO.
Other years, your correct, he was with Bulls. Among other teams. Im not trying to bolster his value, I dont plan on trading him. :)

Memphis Fan... I'm confused... you say I'm wrong, then restate exactly what I said??? He was a starter 3 years ago (healthy... started 74 games), was "slated" as the starter 2 years ago (but was only able to start 20, missed games 15 completely due to injury, and was limited to coming off bench most of season), and was a starter last year. That's exactly what I said... so how am I wrong? Even the year before, Chicago, he started in 30 of 37 games... so yes, he was a starter then too. He missed most of the season due to injury, but his averages are only for games played, over 3/4 of which he started in. Otherwise, it's like saying that Webber wasn't Sacramento's starter last year. The point is, when he's healthy enough to play, he starts. So if we have the same numbers, the only thing I don't understand why you say (a) I'm wrong, and (b) "Previous years, Barry wasn't a starter". The only year of the last 4 that he wasn't a starter was 00-01, when he was supposed to be the starter but was limited to coming off the bench most of the year. The other 3 years he _was_ the starter (when healthy enough to play at all).

It's not just the points and boards that were high last year (comparing last year to 99-00 when he also started for Seattle)... assists jumped from 3.6 to 5.3, steals from 1.3 to 1.8, FT % from 81 to 85, FG% from 46 to 51%... if he repeats last year, great. But I won't be at all suprised to see his numbers start to taper off a bit this year. The one caveat is that if Seattle blows chunks this year, he might see more time against opps reserves, in which case I guess he could post similar numbers.

My other concern with Barry is exactly what you mentoined... Mason... Seattle is rebuilding (shipping Baker, shopping Payton to Indiana, etc.), which is also why they want to get Lewis under a reasonable contract, so that they still have cap room to get another young star. They'll develop Mason, Lewis, (Tinsley if they can work the Indiana trade) and other young guys into their team of their future. Barry is turns 32 in December, and is not part of their long-term plans (IMHO), he's just filling the gap for now, until Mason is ready to step up.

Post 85 - "he didn't start because of DMason" If they played different positions, why would this be relevant? You seem to trust ESPN... their updated depth chart lists Mason as the backup SG and Lewis as the SF.

If you want the real Seattle depth chart its:
PG: GP/Anderson SG: Barry/Mason/Forte SF: Lewis/Sesay PF: Rad-Bitch/Drob/Long C: James/Booth/Potepenko

Look we can play FANTASY Fantasy Basketball all we want, but it's still all speculation. Why don't we just wait for the season to start and see how Barry does? Then discuss if in retrospect...
Anybody know where talonted is?

LOL, Doug, youve lost your mind. First thinking Barry isnt good. Trying to discredit the ESPN rankings, even tho you love their depth chart. And now saying Mason is going to debunk Barry. I wont argue when you've obviously never seen a Seattle game and have some vengance against Barry who's one of the best Roto players. Guess your either pissed you passed him or hate white men that can jump! :)

BTW, Half of ESPN has him as SF, then the half your looking at obviously has him listed as a Guard. I wouldnt trust a site who isnt consistant on possitions.

"First thinking Barry isnt good." - I've already stated otherwise twice... do I really need to do so again? All I ever said was that following the ESPN ratings and picking Barry at #7 was a joke. Doesn't mean I don't like him, but I really shouldn't need to explain that a third time, should I? We've already IMed about your counting issue... ;-)

Has Youngbuck taken over your computer Doug?
Your talking like a madman! As I said, ESPN is out of date. Hence why you shouldnt trust their depth charts. However, even being out of date, their last years stats are still applicable.
I dont see how you can argue Barry @ #7 when its all based on an equation to determine stats. But hey, argue the numbers all you want. He's still going to be #7. :)

If you go by averages on the ESPN list, which I find more useful, Barry drops to #13 which probably appeases you more Doug. Also, if you'll note, under this system, Barry stands to gain from his FG% and FT%. The problem is, while his individual percentages are good, he doesn't take as many shots or FTs as some of the other players you might have on your fantasy team, thus the benefits of those categories should be weighted less. This'll probably put him around #15 or #16. Move up Ben Wallace and Shaquille O'neal because C's the hardest position to fill and voila... you have Brent Barry around the 17th or 18th pick and lo and behold, that's about where he went. See the ESPN list is helpful and see Brent Barry is a deceptively good Roto player despite his lack of star status. Now can't we all just get along?
Hang Time! :)

I like that team too MNG. LaFrentz would probably be the only pick I would disagree w/. BTW, we don't have Utility slots in this league. Just 4th Gs and Fs slots.

Just one last comment regarding ESPN... you said their depth charts are out of date. Just FYI, for every sigificant signing or trade in the last few weeks (as long as I've been following them), they have updated those depth charts within a few hours (Zo being the most recent example). There have also been a few moves (for 2nd-3rd stringers) that haven't had any accompanying news item... I'm guessing their research department just learned something about a change in the team's plans for the upcoming season, maybe based on summer league, etc. Not newsworthy stuff, but obviously someone is staying on top of it on a very regular basis. Again, just FYI.

Uhm, They're depth charts arent even consistant. The insider has a different one than the rest of their site. But yeah, they moved Zo. www.realgm.com -- best depth charts.

Nazr starting over Theo, RIIIGHT Murry over Ricky Davis, SUUREE, heck, that lowly draft pick Dajaun Wagner isnt even 2nd string. Oh, and where's Ming? Taylor AND Cato over him. Yeah.. okay. No need to pick more holes.

Well, went to realgm and looked at the very first depth chart that came up... Boston. Everything that I've read (other than this site) said that Boston brought in Baker to play C, not to to sit on the Bench and spell Walker. Of course, mabye they're right... maybe they know something the rest of the world doesn't.

Actually, I take that back... the one other theory I heard was move Pierce from SF to SG, Walker from PF to SF, and Baker at PF. But not come in off the bench.
