Subject: Keeper League for Guru Patrons

Wiggs and I would like to start a league for Guru Patrons. We will both be sending in our contributions soon so we would obviously qualify.
As Guru indicated here here he is willing to donate a prize if half the managers are Patrons and the winner is a Patron.
So we are looking to see who's got interest. We will give priority to Patrons first just to see if we can fill it up with them.
Once we have a full league (10 managers?) we can discuss rules and what categories everyone wants in. We would need to get drafting soon. |

My first suggestion (having already been in 2 slow drafts) is to have rules beforehand, and atleast try to find a time for a somewhat live draft... otherwise I'm just taking a wait-and-see approach. Feel free to e-mail me with some ideas and such.

AP10 mentioned to me that it might be better to get 12 instead of 10. i am looking for thoughts on that matter. If we go with 12 deepsnapper mentioned that he has a friend that might want in, if he does we still need 1 more.
Some ideas farn and I came up with are:
Rosters
16 per team
Positions
PG, SG, G, SF, PF, F, C, Util, Util, IL, IL and 7 bench
Stats
points, rebounds, assists, steals, Blocks, T.O., 3 pointers, 3 point %, FT %, FG %, FT made, FG made.
Other thought
Keep 4 players each year
waivers 2 days, pick ups made via emails written to wiggs or farn at wiggs1766@hotmail.com or farney@yahoo.com respectively.
Trades will all be voted on and 5 vetos will be required to veto a trade.
We were thinking to get everyones ideas in ASAP and maybe get a draft order made tomorrow and possibly start a slow draft tomorrow night or Friday morning. We will have to come up with a timer per pick, but what can be up for discussion.
these are just our thoughts, everything is up for change if people post.

why not just have 9 categories, minus the fg made, ft made, and 3pt %
i kinda feel that this would be overkill on these categories, since to get a good fg% you would need not only to have a good fg%, but also one who makes a lot of field goals. So the extra fg made stat kinda over emphesizes this stat. Same can be said with ftmade, and 3pt%.

I'm with vince--it is overkill to have the % and the totals. I say go with the % for FG, Ft and 3pt in addition to the pts, rebs, assts, blk, stl and TO. I do like the roster setup with 9 players starting that wiggs put forth.

i kinda like the 3ptm, instead of 3pt%, since just counting 3pt% eliminates many 3pt shooters, and isn't that the point of this category? to balance your team with those who are three point shooters? because if you just have 3pt%, one could get away with just using a ray allen, and then a bunch of people who don't shoot threes to keep the % high.

the problem with this might be that rather than adding depth to the league in terms of creating more players with value, it just lowers those who shoots lots of threes, and raises the value of those who has a high 3pt%. becuase isn't it rare to come acroos a player who has a high 3pt%, but doesn't shoot that many threes? You get what i'm saying?

ok, few things to work out so we can get this rolling.
I am waiting to hear from wiggs on what he wants to do for a 12th manager. I believe he had 10+ a friend of deepsnapper's listed above.
It looks like we may need to do a completely offline draft. Yahoo has very few spots open for live drafts. Most are early morning during the week. So we can run a draft through here or via AIM. I know weekdays are tough for most.
Wiggs tells me that 3pt % is determined by made/attempted for a team. Its not done by adding up the percentages and dividing them by total players. So the % number will be accurate based on shots made and attempted. With that in mind I still like 3pt%, but I can be persuaded.
So lets try this... I will list the possible categories. If you are one of the 10 managers above in post # just copy and paste them into your reply and type "Y" or "N". Majority rules.

I say if we have 12 solid guys that is fine by me, if not we should stick with 10. Also if we go with 12 managers we should eliminate some of the roster spots. AP10, vilica, deepsnapper, jkaye, should be getting emails. I need the email addys of ike, EH, vinsanity, and knicksfan so I can send them pw's. I would have liked to have invited Peter N. but neither wiggs or I is comfortable with any of the managers who volunteered to be the 12th. If anyone knows of someone please drop either of us a line.
For now all 12 stat categories are listed. Subject to change based on majority vote.
I am ready to start a slow draft once everyone is signed in, categories are finalized, all rules are set, and I randomize a draft order. Lets get this rolling so we can have it done by the end of the month.

thoughts on what we wanna do for keeper rules.
wiggs and i discussed keeping 4 or 5 players a season and putting the rest up for draft. This would give teams a chance to improve after a poor initial draft. It also might be encouragement for any expansion team we need or manager who takes over a squad after a season if a manager must step down.
We preferred keeping a set # of players as opposed to signing contracts for everyone. But obviously we want everyone's opinion.

since no one is really giving us any info Farn and I decided to just take control of the league. First of all we will be keeping 4 players per season. The categories will be the ones farn listed in post 29. We drew the draft order out of a hat and came up with this order.

Guys,
Not to be too critical but you havent allowed us much time to comment on these categories...I think the draft should restart (same order) and change some of this.
Scoring is weighted to heavily.
There are 7 categories for scoring pts and 5 other categories. 3 scoring categories (FGM, FTM & 3PM) should be eliminated (like vinsanity pointed out above), which would make 4 scoring categories and 5 other categories which is a much better balance for the league.

I also think a 5 day waiting period for trades is to long. You would only have 2 days per week to make a trade and have it approved for the following weeks matchup. I think the max waiting period should be 3 days, preferably 2...

AP10- we tried waiting for feedback. All we got was vinsanity saying what you did and Knicksfan agreeing with us. You didn't say anything until after. We didn't wanna wait a week for people to speak up because we need to finish the draft in 2 weeks. We weren't married to the categories, but without much input we did it that way. Let me talk it over with wiggs to see what he says.
As for the 5 day waiting period, I believe I set it for 4 days. And I only did that to allow people a sufficient amount of time to protest. Typically wiggs or I will waive it through in 2 days if no one gives a damn. The 4 days was just a safety valve incase we both go away for a couple of days and there is no one here to veto a trade if necessary. Trust me, 99% of the time a trade will be processed after a 2 day waiting period, or faster if everyone is fine with the trade.

I figure you can't win the category unless you are good shooter. So even if you only shoot a couple a week you still have to make them. Its based on total made divided by total attempted, not %'s added up and divided. So I am thinking having a value on players who are better shooters is more important that a value on players who ice their arms after each game.

After everyone has made their first pick (which will take place when deepsnapper makes his next pick) the 3hr rule will go into effect (midnight to noon est does not count). If 3hrs passes you will be given the next player available on the yahoo rankings (under O-rank to be more specific).
You can leave queues with any manager of your choice.

I was also looking at the Yahoo rankings for players, and I was confused as to the difference between 'Rank' and 'O-Rank'... can anybody clarify what differences there are, and which one would be used should we miss a pick?

I personally think the midnight EST deadline is too early. Extend it to 3am, which makes it midnight PST.
Currently, you could leave your computer at 9:01pm EST and not have to worry about drafting the rest of the night. If you extend the 3 hour deadline to 3am EST then you wouldnt be able to leave your computer until midnight? I surely think that everyone in this league can be at a computer until midnight EST.

noon EST = 9am PST. I personally dont wake up until 10-11am EST so i'm not complaining :)
Maybe bump up the noon EST to 11am EST, which would allow for PST players until 2am EST or 11am PST to pick. Thats not too early...

starting tomorrow morning the freeze time will be 3AM to 11 AM the next morning. Also if you used 2 hours and 30 minutes the night before you only get 30 minutes the next day. thanks

Guys i would like to request that if you know you wont be around for a while that you leave a queue. We are wasting alot of good draft time today. Farn or I will gladly take any queues and we can get this thing in the books.
Also AP10, I was wondering if you would be willing to put the draft into a chart, or just let me know the name of the program that you have so I can do it. Thanks.

AP10, thanks man. I appriciate it. I am thinking the same thing about this moving to slow. Do you think we can force the pick at 2 since vinsanity has picked since the update? I would think that he must have seen it. Also if you will be around, if it reaches the 3 hour limit Rashard Lewis is the next forced pick, just so you know. Thanks.

just so everyone knows ike is on the clock but because he has 2 picks he has 6hrs, at which time he will be given the next 2 in line. so basically he has until about 2pm est tomorrow to make his picks.

I've got laser eye surgery at 1PM CT Friday. We'll leave for the hospital around noon & I should be home by 4PM. A blood vessel burst in the back of my right eye and they're going to zap it.
I'll leave Wiggs a queue if it's close to rolling back around. I just hate to have to make 2 picks from a list. The middle rounds are always the most difficult picks IMO.

The times were changed to 3 AM - 11AM. Read post 90 above. The night hours still don't count, but because Ike was on the clock at around midnight, 3 of his 6 hours passed from 12am to 3 am, and the last 3 hours will pass from 11am to 2pm.

No...Ike has checked in. He parties all weekend and both of his picks have come up late Friday & Saturday night. Unfortunately he didnt wake up in time for his pick yesterday. I called him last night around 2am EST to let him know he had to pick by 2pm today. He said he'd get his pick in...

ok, not sure how to handle this.
Pride left me a queue much earlier today. I used the first of his 2 players and selected Harpring for him. The other player is still available. What's the protocol on that? Do I now give him the other player or is that queue meant for his first pick only? I want to go to bed soon but I don't want him to get autopicked into Mark Jackson (no one deserves that fate).

looks like ike is the last pick and i think he should be picking shortly. (he is usually pretty reliable, when he isnt drunk) Anyways, I am looking to make trades so if anyone is interested I will start a trade talk thread or you can drop me an email at wiggs1766@hotmail.com
