Posted by: Bean - [14147911] Wed, Sep 30, 2015, 14:17

This thread will be used for coordination of league activities this season.

We are still awaiting a 12th owner to join us, meanwhile you should have received invites to both Draft Time and ESPN League. Please join those ASAP.

After I have all team managers signed up at both ESPN and Draftime, I will request from Guru a random order of manager names for the draft order selection round. He’ll post that in this thread, and then we will go through the process of selecting draft position.

I am tentatively starting the draft around Oct. 13. After the first round of the draft I will set
a 4 hour time limit for each pick, with a nightly pause from midnight-8am Eastern time, and no double clock at the endpoints.

Questions/concerns?

Bean requested a random sequence of teams for the draft pick selection round. Here it is:

1 Mighty Meatwads
2 WG
3 weykool
4 WonderB
5 deejay
6 Longtime Lurker
7 Slowhand
8 Bean
9 Wolfer

This is only the order that is used to select draft position. However, the reverse of this order will be the waiver priority order to start the season (i.e, Species first, Meatwads last.)

The draft is a standard snake, 16 rounds.

I will start the draft sometime today or tomorrow. but dont require that anyone pick before 13 OCT. I know that the first pick can be problematic for some people so there will be no clock for the first round, but dont abuse this.

After the first round of the draft I will set
a 4 hour time limit for each pick, with a nightly pause from midnight-8am Eastern time, and no double clock at the endpoints.

I plan to load players into rosters in ESPN as the draft progresses. I've never commished at ESPN, but in Yahoo doing this removes players from the available players lists, which is handy during the draft to sort players available with stats.

[24] I don't think loading players during the draft is going to have the impact you want, unless you activate the league first and then load the players as free agent adds. If you do that, you'll lose the ability to put all players on waivers immediately after the draft - unless you reset all rosters and reenter all drafted players again.

At least, that is how ESPN leagues have operated in the past. And that is actually how we have usually run the G20 leagues (draft-rinse-repeat)

If you figure out a better way, let me know.

Yes, after loading a few players I see it doesn't help. Guess we all will have to track available players ourselves.

First, we are already into round 2, so thanks to everyone for their excitement about getting started.

As I posted before <24>, there was not going to be a clock until the second round, but no earlier than 13 OCT. So, dont forget to set a queue, because the four hour clock starts tomorrow morning at 8am US Eastern Time.

Thanks Bean!

I would like us to consider doing a RIHC-like review of our teams, favorite picks, reaches, etc. Anyone interested?

Now that the RIHC draft has finished, I invite each of the participants to share any reactions that they have. Feel free to say as much or as little as you wish. As a guide, you might consider the following questions:

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?
2) What surprised you?
3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?
4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?
5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.
6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.
7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.
8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

I know nothing about basketball. I just used a couple cheat sheets from around the internet to find some good sleepers.

I'm pretty happy with my team - my rebounds are a little top heavy, and my free throws are weak (both comments directed at the Gobert/Drummond combo), but I think I did well enough.

Most excited about Wiggins and Thaddeus - I expect both to far exceed expectations.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Yes and yes. I had several points that I wanted to focus on, including:
- Draft young with upside
- Generally go "Best Player Available"
- Avoid injury-plagued players
- Avoid FT-tanking big men
- Wait on 3s

Did it work? Mostly.....about mid-draft when things start to get really sketchy, I went after injury risks like Ryan Anderson (couldn't resist those juicy 3s) and Wes Matthews.....and I had taken Brook Lopez who gets hurt a lot - but his awesome scoring, FG and FT were a perfect fit at the time.

2) What surprised you?

Not much. I will say Jasonprof and I seemed to be working from the same set of cheat sheets (or consolidated master cheat sheet), because more often than not he took guys that were in my queue or at least being considered.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

It never really did. All the way through Gortat at Round 7 I felt great about the general value I was getting. In fact, when comparing those top 7 picks with the draft positions in RIHC, in every case I got that player later than they went in RIHC.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Be luckier in the random draw for draft position :)

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I think Derrick Favors was a steal at 6.02 - he's going early to mid 4th in the other drafts. I also think Bogdanovic at 13.11 was highway robbery.

I have buyers remorse on Nerlens Noel at 3.11 - although again his draft position in other drafts is actually higher. But I feared that I couldn't really afford a 10.0 PPG scorer (if that!) after drafting Wall and Leonard, who are probably not 20 PPG scorers.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

I loved Paul George and Carmelo Anthony at 2.08 and 2.11. Kevin Martin at 11.08 was nice - Lavine might start but Martin will rack up stats. Cousins at 1.09 in a non-TO league is ludicrous.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

Chandler Parsons at 4.08, Jimmy Butler at 1.08 and Robert Covington - who I really wanted - at 7.12.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

NOBODY!

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

When I saw pick # 4 available I didn't hesitate and grabbed it with Durant in mind, he will be eager after last's year debacle.

2) What surprised you?

Not much. PG's went even faster than I had expected.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

I often opted for BPA, not really looking at position. By Round 5 I realized all the decent PG's were kinda gone, so kinda forced me T. Evans there.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

A. Get a good PG earlier
B. Not follow Yahoo positions whilst playing at ESPN. Love was PF/C at Yahoo. If I had known he is only listed as PF at ESPN, I would have gone a different road.
Funny thing is I did the same with my last round pick, took Frye thinking he can be used at C, well that ain't so. Result I am thin at C.
Not that Frye is that useful anyways.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

I really like Galinari(7.04). That might change in a few weeks though. There is a certain amount of risk involved...
Not wild about Love now he's no C(3.09)
Also had Draymond Green there as my pick, but Meatwads knew that ;)

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

13.02 J.Grant... I really wanted him, and didn't think he would go that early. He's gonna surprise people this year.
10.05 Jrue Holiday... if he gets his body right rather quickly he will be awesome value there, also was aiming for him in that round...

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

4.11 Towns...
I usually don't draft Rookies, though I reached this year for one too(Stanley Johnson 10.09)
However I have high hopes for him, he seems to do a bit of everything. FG% might be an issue though.

7.03 David Lee.
Also had him on my list, but round 7 seems a tad early with the pletora of big men they have in Boston.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

If I had to? Meatwads.

1) Did you have a specific strategy going in? Did it go as expected?

Best available in early rounds; Make sure you get three good PGs by middle rounds Watch the % stats and dont get in trouble. Fill starting lineup while keeping a balance for all counting stats in late rounds. Try not to reach because of a specific strategy.

Did it work? Fairly well, got Teague (3) and Conley (4), and later got Rondo (9) and Holliday (10) to round out the assists (Noah helps there too(. My guards have decent FG% and my big men either have good FT% or dont shoot a lot of free throws.

2) What surprised you?

No surprises.

3) How did your approach change as things unfolded?

Not much, i delayed the third PG pick up, but didnt want to reach.

4) If you had to do it over, what would you do differently?

Not much.

5) Your best and worst pick, in retrospect.

Rondo at 9th was easily my best, though I agree with Species that Kevin Martin at 11 was pretty good. Ask me after my first guy gets injured who I think my worst pick was. Holliday is a stash for later in season when his minutes go up. I have no remorse when a late pick goes south, they are all dice rolls.

6) The 2 or 3 picks by other managers that you thought were especially good steals.

That best steals are always the injury risks that turn out well. Irving (3), and Rose (6) and Bryant (7) are the best examples that come to mind.

7) 2 or 3 players that were selected higher than you had expected.

I guess the ones I notice are my sleepers that someone else grabbed ahead of me.

Mo Williams, Evan Turner and all the rookies.

8) If you had to trade your own team for one other owner's team in the league, whose would you want it to be?

If he is lucky with his injury prone roster, Weykool could kill it.

did i have a plan. heck no. stratagy. pffft. this draft was done over a weeks vacation in my RV in destin florida. the only reason i didn't hit a 4 hr clock violation is i just kept dumping guys into a general queue. i had 20 guys lined up in it a couple times and it just barely lasted the 24 hours i needed it to. i'm surprised my wife put up with me sneaking out of the RV at nights to get closer to the wifi signal that was still painfully slow. why no use LTE you say? i live in canada and the only phone i have is a work phone, no usa roaming for me. i had no sheats with me like i would ussually have and this caused me no end of misery in the later rounds looking for a deal that was acctually still available.
in short. total seat of my pants stuff. but hey after 20 years x 2 leagues a year i can probably wing a draft or two on basic draft priciples.
my principles being,
keep it young - no aging stars on the decline. don't start injured, i can't stand the injury process these days. how many times do we here "we are going to bring him back slow" forget it.
carefull of the 'hype machine' hmmm. should i name names.... ok, gobert 2nd rnd. omg. whiteside 5th rnd, hmm well ok. heck i'm surprized whiteside didnt go a round earlyer the way the machine was rolling there. but, maybe it'll all turn out good for them. they are young. thats good right? they are centers. hey look,,,that young center is in foul trouble again. no way! that never happens!
sorry to rag on your guys. i shouldn't and of the two i think gobert just might live up to his draft position.
but...then again, that statment right there is the reason i stay away. it's tough to get a good deal when you have to draft a player at the top of their value. buying high? ask a stock broker about that one.
anyway, my oun players. slimed down lowry is set for a nice year and his big preseason is backing me up. i think valanciunas will be better this year, well who else are they going to play in that front court. demarre carroll should be good where i got him. bismack might be ok in that thin front court...wait. did i draft 4 rapters? homer picks or what?? who's got derosen, what do you want for him?
the one thing that threw me and it sounds like it got to at least one other drafter, the ESPN positions. i'm too used to the liberal position handout of yahoo (paul george is already 3 positions. what!). it was after i drafted david lee that i realised i didn't have 3 C eligible players, i only had 1. oops, ahhh, scamble... ya hibbert looks good. wait, hibbert is my 2nd center and i have to play 2 centers.? this is not good.
oh well. could be worse.
who was a steal you ask? well who knows really but there were players i wanted in a round. being near an end position i noticed the turn guys taken between my picks. tyson chandler, evan turner and robin lopez, mccullum, jerian grant. it hurts when they are so close. then on the outside of that stanley johnson, jabari parker, MCW, farouq aminu, george hill, deng, bogdanovic, meyers leonard. are they steals? i don't know but i wanted them there.
speculation doesn't really matter at 8:00pm ET october 27th. thats about all i can say about that.
