Well, about 16 minutes to post and Smarty Jones is 1-5.
Lot of money will be lost if he doesn't win it. Really think this is as close to a sure thing as you can get unless something weird happens due to track conditions.

He was pressed too hard on the front end to hold up at that distance... My own horse ran a disappointing 5th last night at Charles Town and I'm more disappointed in Smarty's loss than I was in my own...
I'm not disappointed in Smarty, he ran a great race.. It's just the result...

BIRDSTONE Post 4 Trainer: Nick Zito Jockey: Edgar Prado Morning line: 15-1
Other than winning the Champagne Stakes last fall, he's done nothing. He's been up the track in the Lane's End and the Derby, and his alleged great potential has never been realized. There have been more excuses for him than teenagers produce for not doing homework. He may be the equine version of Brazil, "the country of the future, and it always will be." Forget him.

A Zito actually won!

RE post #1,
Bookie although he was pressed on the backstretch by 2 or 3 horses the pace wasn't that fast.
24 sec at the quarter and 48 at the half is pretty slow for top notch race horses.
He's just another horse that was exposed at Belmont to be not worthy of the Triple Crown. Only the super horses win the Triple Crown.

BTW, if you listen to the call of the race, Tom Durkin even mentions that the pace was "soft".
Smarty really had no excuse if you consider that.

How were you able to move around with all those people? What was it, 150,000 or something like that? Must have been a pain in the ass to even make a bet?
But I bet you saw some nice looking women out there though?

i live in NYC. i'm used to crowds. you just move.
there were some cute women there. there were also a lot of drunk long island kids that needed to be bitch slapped.
the biggest hassle was the Long Island RailRoad being unprepared to get us home...waited over 2 hours to cram into a tiny train, and that's ever after staying for ALL the races, not just the big one...

Agree with you about the rich kids. Can't stand them for many reasons.

MadDog, while the fractions weren't that fast, the fact that the other horses were pressuring him, causes the horse to not relax and settle in, which expends a lot more energy than just cruising along at the same speed. I didn't like the pressure that was put on him, nor did I like the fact that Stu left him 3 wide. He should have left those other horses have the front and settled in behind them to save a little ground...
It was what it was, a loss, but I'll make a predicition here and now.. When Smarty runs in the PA Derby on Labor Day.. He'll win by a minimum 15 lengths.....

When you're 3 wide on a straightaway, you're not losing any ground. You only lose ground being wide when your on the turns. Smarty wasn't that wide on the turns.
Yea, there was horses coming at him on the backstretch, it looked like he was working to stay on the lead, but the pace says he wasn't. Even if he was, it wasn't anything that a true Triple Crown horse should have been able to overcome. Not much excuse in my mind. You're right though. The trainer did say something about him not settling in and relaxing.

no way Smarty was winning. When there's 100,000 people betting on him to win because they WANT him to win, no way he's being allowed to win.
