It's obviously tough to come up with a list that everyone would agree with, but I think these are some pretty good choices. I thought it better to keep the list short, but it could be expanded if there are enough "other" votes.

Cigar, Seattle Slew, Personal Ensign, Affirmed should all be on there.

Who can forget that race by Personal Ensign in the Breeders Cup Distaff at Churchill in 1988? One of the greatest races of all time.

You must not follow horse racing then.

I bet you never heard of TalentedMrRipley one of the greatest greyhounds of all time. Or Cayman Went another great greyhound.

Ahhh, I forgot mostly just degenerate gamblers would know this stuff.

Hang around this site for awhile if you want to get into the world of greyhound racing.

BTW, Personal Ensign is a daughter of Man O War.

Re: # 6

How did that happen? Man O War was dead long before Personal Ensign was born. Maybe a great granddaughter or something like that.

Yes I remember Personal Ensign's great race in the 1988 Distaff - I actually have it on tape and still get chills watching that move in the stretch against Winning Colors to finish her career undefeated.

What about Wild Again's win in the 1984 Classic? That was all heart - going off at 30-1 battling the two favorites Gate Dancer and Slew O'Gold down the stretch. Wild Again just would not yield against those two great horses. A Classic.

MadDog - you into greyhound racing?

Can't forget Spectacular Bid when talking about the greatest of all time. A safety pin away from the Triple Crown.

Personal Ensign must not be a daughter of Man O War but some sort of grandchild down the line.

One of Man O War's descendants though. Has Man O War blood in her.

Personal Ensign is out of Private Account and a mare by Hoist the Flag. Man o' War can be found in both Private Account and Hoist the Flag.

The most intriguing thing to me about a horse's "greatness" is that most people look to the triple crown winners... The point that I feel is missed there is that the triple crown is for 3 year olds only and that for the most part a horse doesn't hit his peak performance and maturity until after that point.

Another thing with this poll... When we talk about the greatest horse, are we talking his/her personal track record or does his/her progeny also affect the vote....

If we are talking purely the greatest horse on his own performance, it's hard not to vote for Cigar.

Wow, can't believe I am the only vote for Dr. Fager.

Some horses are bred for speed, others bred to stay, an amazing sprinter is not less of a horse because it can't stay long distances, just as a stayer is no less of a horse because it can't sprint with the best of them. For this reason the Triple Crown should not even be mentioned when deciding the greatst horses, although it doesn't disclude a horse.

I pick Cigar, but only because it was the one I was able to watch through it's short career. The others are just folk heroes and folk heroes tend to be over rated, so I don't know which one of them really would have been better than Cigar.

Buckpasser was a great horse and should be on the list, but certainly not #1.
I would rank Forego over Cigar when considering handicap geldings.
However, Secretariat was a once in a millenium, not century, horse, and was orders of magnitude better than any other.
