0 Subject: BYU could cause fiasco

If BYU wins its first two games, it will render all pools nationwide null and void. It will be a fiasco the likes this country has never seen. It is an outrage to begin with because it wouldn't have been difficult to ensure that BYU not get a Sunday game in the regional final. Now that it is too late to change, NCAA officials will be praying that BYU isn't still around after Saturday.

It took me literally 3 seconds after their name came up on the screen to realize that this was going to be a problem. Everyone knows BYU can't play on Sundays, so they had to be placed in the Midwest or West Region, and placed in an opening round pod that plays Thursday/Saturday, either Indy, OKC, Spokane, or Salt Lake City, with Salt Lake unlikely because high seeds are supposed to be protected from home crowd disadvantages. How a committee of 10 could ALL miss this and put them in the South is unfathomable to me. This goes beyond the typical arguments of what teams got screwed, or seeded incorrectly, because those are judgment calls. This was a blatant violation of the selection procedures on the part of the committee, and it's too bad because for the most part I think they did a pretty good job. Personally I question Auburn and Alabama being in, but anyway here they are, they should all be dumped....

The selection committee (year term expires):
Jim Livengood - Arizona AD (04) - Chairman
Craig Littlepage - Virginia AD (07)
Karl Benson - WAC Commissioner (06) Les Robinson - The Citadel AD (04)
Robert Bowlsby - Iowa AD (05) Judy Rose - Charlotte AD (04)
Jack Kvancz - George Washington AD (03) Gary Walters - Princeton AD (07)
Floyd Kerr - Southern AD (06) Kevin Weiberg - Big 12 Commissioner (05)

We'll just all have to pull for UConn in round 1!

BTW, the contest simulator will not be adjusted to accommodate this eventuality. If you pick BYU to advance to the Sweet 16, it will not switch them to the other region. Deal with it!

I thought the selection committee did a terrible job. The West is probably the strongest bracket ever. It's got the 2nd best #1 seed, the best #2 seed, the best #3 seed, and the best #4 seed.

I had intended to price Kentucky and Arizona higher this year. But the bracket strength caused me to pull back a little.

This is probably a stupid question, but why can't BYU play on sundays?

Religious reasons. Sunday, for them, is the Sabbath, and they believe they are forbidden to work on the Sabbath. They are almost all Mormons.

The Mormon faith requires that they rest on Sunday.

BYU is a Mormon school.

The BYU players can't eat at Chick-fil-A on Sundays, either.
;-)
[S. Truett Cathy, who identifies himself as an "evangelical Christian," is the chief executive of Chick-fil-A, Inc. Every Monday morning this Atlanta-based firm provides a devotional time for its employees who wish to participate. On Sundays, when McDonald’s and Burger King are doing a brisk business, Cathy closes his 1,000 fast-food franchises. His rationale? "My Sunday School boys would think I’m a hypocrite if I’m up there teaching while my cash register is jingling."]

Moot point.

Thank you, UConn.

Game on.
