At the risk of sounding like a total noobie (this IS my first time at
the contest), can someone explain what short, long, and off refer
to? I feel like I'm missing something important here :)

In making your selections, you can either short a team, go long on a team, or choose not to do either with a team. A team which you short, you expect to underpreform in the tournament, i.e. a number one should go to the final four, if you think they will loose before hand you would want to short them. Going long on a team is the exact opposite. If you think a team will go farther then their seeding suggests you would go long on that team. Any team you don't want to go short or long, will be left off, and have no effect on you score

Another way to think of it is that you are betting against a short, and you are betting on a long.

I dont see playing the teams rather than the baskets as an advantage at all.
I shorted the #1 seeds. That seems like the obvious choice.

I dont see playing the teams rather than the baskets as an advantage at all.

It's an advantage if you want to be eligible for the team-only prize. As mentioned elsewhere, one can theoretically win that portion w/ basket units, but it's never happened.

I'm doing 2 entries w/ baskets and 1 w/o baskets. My basket-free unit won't be in the running for the overall, but I have 2 other shots at it.

I love these physical match ups. I don't think Mississippi state likes to be pushed around. They haven't been pushed around all year but they have done the pushing.

I shorted Mississippi St. and longed Xavier. Collecting G$30 is a great way to start off the day.

The Miss St loss moved me up to 16, thanks to my short of the 2 seed and the SEC. I have the Big East and UCONN longed, so I have that covered.

I probably didn't have a good enough formula to win this thing, but for the first time, I actually am happy with how I did.

I also shorted NC state. Ha ha ha. I knew they would lose early to Vanderbilt. It's been a good day. But i longed the #3 seeds as well. I figured GT and Texas could go the distance. So i was kind of conservative but i figure by picking some tough matchups with Teams i could gain something. We'll see how it goes.

wow you shorted NC state too. That's pretty good. I shorted Kentucky so that was my one #1 seed i thought would do me some good. Kentucky is overrated and they have to deal with GT and Kansas. I think Kansas is kind of underrated but they did have a bad season.

Deadeyes, my entry name is the same as my name here (erb136). I picked all teams (no baskets) and am currently ranked 38th in non-basket scoring. I shorted all of the #2 seeded teams except for UConn which I longed.

Like I said, I dont know how well my plan was of shorting the ACC and NC State while longing GTech. I liked shorted the 2 seeds and longing UCONN, as I figured UCONN would be the only 2 seed to survive through to the Final 4.

We will see, so far, I'm happy.

I will just be very happy if Pitt and UCONN meet in the final game.

It's true that it's hard to not contradict yourself. I did contradict myself but at the same time i figured if i went all out and did everything for max points you would lose a lot. The money thing is pretty simple if you get to the Final Four with a long it does incredible things for you. Go #7 seeds.

Choke job by NC State.

So my 3 seed bracket takes a hit, but I gain shorting NC State and ACC.

Go Pitt!
