The site has been launched for 2014: RotoGuru Market Madness.

2014 bracket data will be loaded on Sunday evening and probably released sometime around 10pm EDT. Until then, last year's bracket data is still in place, and contest scoring (the "My Score" link) still reflects 2013 game results.

There are 314 entries this year, up about 8% from last year.

I've posted a sortable summary of 2014 unit selections. Click on any linked column heading to sort by that column. A few quick observations:

  • Favorite shorts are Wichita State, Virginia, #5 seed basket, and Atlantic 10 basket
  • Favorite longs are Louisville, Michigan State, #4 seed basket, and Florida
  • Wichita State was the most active unit, with 203 shorts and 33 longs.
  • Every unit had some action. NC Central had the lightest activity, with one long and one short

I still have no idea how this works or understanding the the long/short concept but I gave it a shot!

I waited to the last second, went to save my picks only to learn that the first game started two minutes ago... DOH!

I have not figured this out but one of these times hope to finish with a positive score. I usually finish with big negative number.

Ok, so looks like I have everything backwards. I though I was supposed to short my upset choices and vice versa... looks like i would have done pretty darn well too.

As in investment markets, you short the teams (or stocks) you are betting against, and you long the teams you are betting on. So it does sound like you got it backwards.

I'm a bit confused by a 5 point difference in my scores. Currently, after 37 games, I have 230 pts in the My Scores section but 235 pts in the Standings section. What's up with that?

Guru - is the score of Baylor's (#6) upset victory over Creighton (#3) correct? It's showing up as 11 points for me but shouldn't it be 14 (17-3)?

Perhaps I'm not understanding the scoring system as well as I thought..... It wouldn't be the first time.

a few numbers for the top 50 places:

jdrenbarger has 20 longs left;
kooldad3 has 19 longs;
JeopardyTempest2 has 19 longs;
Jasonfhall1 has 19 longs;
Chuck Rules??? has 18 longs;
CTcuse2 has 18 longs;
Impeake has 18 longs;
RichardCullip has 18 longs

RogerNullset has 20 shorts (and zero longs) left; he is not positioned very well for the top place..

who is positioned the best? that is hard to say because of strength of some units that are left, but:

skyhockey has 6 shorts left and 18 longs left;
JeopardyTemptest2 has 8 shorts and 19 longs left;
jdrenbarger has 9 shorts and 20 longs left;
jasonfhall1 has 8 shorts and 19 longs;
1st place Optimization1 has 8 shorts and 13 longs;
2nd place louky has a whopping 16 shorts left and only 5 longs;
my team in 59th place has 4 shorts and 15 longs (and if Michigan and Michigan State could play each other in the final, I could win, I have both of them long in 3 different spots - Go Blue!)

If you have 8 of the sweet 16 teams picked right is that above or below average?

[13] Corrected.

[14] 2013 standings

[16] I dunno. Never did that type of analysis. But I'm sure it varies from year to year.

Remember, having a lot of longs is good, but can also be bad if you get a lot of negative points. In your example above, if UT beats Michigan then that's a quick -45 for you having all 3 of them long.

I feel like the 12 seed in the sweet 16. This isn't my 1st year playing, but it is my 1st year to actually follow the results. I may not be there at the end, but I do have a much better feel for the game. Looking forward to next year.... and go Cards

Sunday morning: 5 games left

Here is the long and the short of it with 5 games left.

Anyone with UCONN longx3 could score a ton of points if the Huskies win today.

Optimization1 is the leader and he is positioned very well if UCONN were to win today. He is one of four players in the 20 who has UCONN longx3.

lfrit1 - currently 2nd place - has 3 shorts and 7 longs, if MSU were to make the final four, he would have Wisconsin longx2, MSU longx3 both left.

CrabbyBills - 3rd place - his entry looks almost identical to lfrit1.

CTcuse3 - 4th place - he is positioned very weel with 3 shorts and 10 longs (yes 10 longs); he has UCONN longx3 and MSU longx3 plus Mich, Wis, UF, Kent

skyhockey - 5th - a little dirrentiation here - he has 0 shorts and 8 longs, he is the only person in the top ten with UMich longx2

long shot? kooldad3 currently in 14th place - he has Kentucky longx3 and MSU longx3, if that was the final game kooldad3 would have a shot to win it

My entry - juanabe - is the only one with the young Wolverines longx3 in the top 30, with 0 shorts and 10 longs left, I could finish high but... Mich long x3; MSU longx3, Wisc longx2; Kent, UCONN

The Big 10 smashed me up. I tried to post about how having a huge number of longs means you had all positions rounded so that only gain was probable (as Friday started, I had 8 teams with more long than short, 2 teams even, and 2 with more shorts). Then it all fell apart (thanks to the double shorted Michigan\MSU smashing heavy longs, and a neutral Kentucky not helping me like others).

How about lfrit, with a straight team set... has the Final 4, and had MSU... plus shorts on Kansas, Duke, Creighton, Oklahoma, Wichita State, Ohio State, and Villanova. I'm interested to see whether folks are within range of the bonus for near perfect selections. I'd think having UK+UConn triple longed would have to put you near range for that. Wonder what percent lfrit is off by right now (Dayton and UT are the biggest missing teams I guess).

At least it was an exciting year!
