The contest site has been launched for 2017.

There's not much to do before the brackets are announced, of course.

Just entered my picks for Market Madness, after watching the last "First Four" game, but well in advance of this morning's first "real" game.

The system gave me this message, along with the time stamp. If there was some other deadline besides the tipoff of the field of 64, I'm sorry to have missed it, because I do enjoy this game.

Here is a recap of newly stored selections for entry ohwow. Because the tournament has already started, this entry will not be included in the contest standings. However, you can still track your progress using the "My Score" link at the left, just to see how this set of picks would have fared against the official field..

Validity Check: Your entry is valid.
These selections were successfully stored at 1:47:27 EDT on 3/16.
You may wish to print this frame as a confirmation that your picks were successfully stored.

I entered entries for all 4 family members last night and this morning, and got the same error message every time. I checked before tip, and all had picks stored. I'm assuming it's an error message from last year, but hoping it doesn't glitch out, since first 4 don't matter in this contest.

Just a programming glitch. All picks posted before the first tip were properly recorded.

There were 421 entrants this year, up 18% from last year. I’ve posted a sortable summary of 2017 unit selections. Click on any linked column heading to sort by that column. A few quick observations:
  • Favorite short is Baylor, followed by the SEC basket, Kansas, Big 10 basket, Gonzaga, and Kentucky
  • Favorite longs are Duke and Arizona, followed by the #2 seeds, SMU, and Wichita State.
  • Arizona was the most active unit, with 152 longs and 88 shorts.
  • Every unit had some activity on both the long and short side.
The standings will be updated periodically during the day. Click on the standings link, and the number of games included will appear in the page heading. Remember that because cash received on shorts is part of your net return, entries with large short imbalances will appear at the top of the rankings at the start of the contest. After several rounds, most of those will drift down, unless their shorts have worked out very well. It is typical that some entrants position their picks with the apparent objective of gaining an early lead. Everyone seeks their 15 minutes of fame, I guess.

Any updates/observations out there?

B1G looking strong. ACC plaiyng weak.

Through 45 games, my 1-year-old son who favored "manly" mascots is in 1st place. He has little staying power when it comes to final 4 bonuses unless the 4 seeds (specifically Florida and Purdue) make a good run, but it's always fun to celebrate the small victories. Go Super Pooper!

Of my basket-free entry, I only have 1 of 10 shorts still alive. That's the best I can ever remember after the first 2 rounds. I have just UNC short left with the following 6 longs still alive:

Wisconsin
West Virginia
Xavier
Kansas
Oregon
Kentucky

This entry is 2nd place in basket-free right now. With the weakness in the ACC so far, I feel it's positioned pretty well to make a good run at 1st, though next weekend will sort a bunch more out..

Congrats to contest winner qatman with a score of G$431. The winner of the Basket-Free Contest is dzparks, with a score of G$243.

The best possible score this year would have been G$1016. North Carolina appears in only two representations on the long side (team, #1 seeds) offset by a short of the ACC basket.

The best short this year was the #2 seed basket, while the top scoring longs were the SEC, the #7 seed basket, and South Carolina, each netting from G$116 to G$129. Here is the complete list of units, sorted by net return.

Prize winners will be notified by email within the next week. Thanks to all for continuing to support this oldest of all RotoGuru Contests.
