Subject: Market Madness Name

I remember last year when Dave had to change the name of his contest rather quickly and settled for Market Madness. Unless he is bent on keeping it as Market Madness, how about we try to come up with some suggestions for him.
Obviously we can't call it March Madness but here are a couple suggestions from me:
College Hoops Madness Spring Madness Sludge's Game
Okay, I was kidding on the last one.

I kind of like the name "Market Madness." It gets the point across that it is more like playing the market (ie. longing and shorting teams) as opposed to just picking winners. Maybe if someone comes up with a good name to incorporate the market and basketball elements it may be better, but Market Madness is pretty good, I think.

I wanna know what prompted you to put "Sludge's Game", even in jest.
Sheesh... I couldn't even finish in the top 40. (Although I did come close to the booby prize.)

For some reason I thought you were in the top 5.
You seem to excel at Guru's games so yes, it was made in jest but also with props to you.

Thanks then... Hopefully, your statement will be prophetic.
Actually, I have worked out the "optimal" selection method, and you'd probably be surprised how much like Pickoff it is. Unfortunately, it requires some simulation and estimates of the probability of every team beating every other team. That's 2016 estimates needed. Needless to say, it is a highly non-exact science. I'm hoping for better results this time around, but I doubt it's gonna happen.
(No, I don't sit down and write down all 2016 probabilities. I just use some of the computer ratings to compute them on the fly. That way you only need 64. A drawback of this is that you don't have any control over matchups like Duke-UNC, where you can throw the ratings pretty much out the window.)

I worked on putting together an optimal selection method also, but then I look at last years tournament results and shook my head.

I know what you mean. I've said this before several times, but the classic ncaa pools are totally frustrating. You look at the upsets that happen, which is where the pools are really won, and you think to yourself, "Man, you would have had to be a moron to make that selection!"

I agree. Picking the right upsets can make you look like a genius. Typically, I pick the wrong ones and do think to myself, "What a moron I am for picking those."

I didn't say your game would be won by morons... it's more sophisticated than that.
But, set up a traditional pool, and call it Moron Madness, and I'd be all for it... and playing it... and picking moronic upsets. :)

I dunno, I think I could excel at some Moronic picks.

Why can't it be called March Madness?
