Subject: 2008 In Season Football thread

Taxman had the gall to Ask how we do our waiver claims, back in the defacto draft thread, so I thought I'd start an in-season thread with the rules at the top (this is just a cut and paste, for the most part, so the names haven't been changed to protect the innocent). Not sure if we go pay for the plus thingy, this would be easier:
For new league members who are not familiar, here is the gist of Toral's explanation of the system from 2006.
We decided last year to opt out of Yahoo's default system where free agents can be picked up anytime. The major reason I believe was to avoid the situation where RBs 1 and 2 go down on Sunday and a player suddenly becomes valuable and goes to the 1st person to go to the computer. Some people are away many Sundays, some aren't near a computer and some just don't want to have to follow all injuries and rush to the computer when a player suddenly becomes valuable.
Requests for players are handled through the manual waiver system. Managers who want to pick up a player must make a request to the commissioner or his delegate (myboyjack was the delegate last year and has offered to do it again) by a stated time each week (usually Tuesday at 9 P.M. Eastern). mbj sifts through the requests and produces a report on which claims have been approved, publishes it on the message boards, and sends it to the commissioner. The waiver priority is bottom up, last to first based on the standings as of that time. Multiple claims and alternative claims (i.e., DROP Joe Blow PK and pickup John Doe PK OR Joe Schmoe PK) are possible. Alternative claims address the possibility of some other manager claiming the player you want before it's your turn to claim.
Adding to that, once any NFL game starts, all free agent players on those teams are officially "on waivers" and cannot be added to anyone's roster. If you want to add a player to your team after his game has started that weekend, you must submit your request to the (currently unestablished) delegate via email.
The waiver schedule we used last year was that the claims had to be emailed to the delegate by 9pm EST Tuesday nights. That night the delegate (Waiver Master?) processes the claims and announces where all the players landed in a Rotoguru thread designed specifically for that purpose. (Last year's thread here)
We all then have 24 hours, until 10pm EST Wednesday to add the players we've claimed off waivers. At that time, 10pm EST on Wednesdays, all players not currently on any fantasy team's roster then becomes a free agent, until kickoff for their next game.
Also, when emailing your claims to the Waiver Master, please be sure to list your claims in order of preference and include the first and last name of players involved and their positions and teams. For example:
1. ADD: Joe Namath, QB, NY Jets DROP: Fred Dryer, DL, LA Rams
2. ADD: OJ Simpson, KWM, Buffalo Bills DROP: Fred Dryer, DL, LA Rams OR Bill Bergy, DL, Phil. Eagles
This manager wanted to acquire both Joe Namath and OJ Simpson. Note that, knowing that he might not get both claims through the waiver system, and preferring to lose Dryer over Bill Bergy, he made Fred Dryer his first-choice player to drop both times. In case the Namath claim was successful, he listed a second player to drop for OJ, since Dryer would then no longer be on his team.

Good luck to you too, B7!
You've been an asset to the league, and it will be a shame to see you knocked so early from the playoffs.

I can do the waiver claims, if no one wants to. Probably should be someone not in the playoffs, though. Who is the commissioner this week?

Good luck coach Baldwin. I don't think I can count on Ronnie Brown to score 5 TD's again. I'll have to find some points somewhere else.

One of my less consistant WR's has gone off berserker style, so 'the building' is going to need to be pretty tuff to withstand the blast methinks.

Tho I don't have stattracker, it looks pretty conclusively that I have to join other noteworthies in taking an early exit. Saving your 2nd lowest game of the year for the playoffs is a recipe for disaster. I'll have to figure out a cure for the Romo fade every year if I intend to keep TO.
That was some nasty DB strategy there, B7. Nice job. Win it for the gipper.

Hey Baldwin -
You dropped Brandon Lloyd illegally, according to Jubal.
Just a heads-up in case one of the finalists wants Bell.

Baldwin needs to drop Bell. Nothing's been hurt, but, AFAIK, he was picked up contrary to our rules.
Next year when someone does it, but picks up someone who matters, I don't want to have to hear any BS about how a precedent was set when Baldwin kept Worthless Bell.

Bah.
I've won the much more challenging and much less luck-dependent baseball league two years running.
Considering how my players played these last two weeks, my guess is, though I haven't verified, that if I was around to set my lineup against B7, instead of up in the national forest with my wife and boy, cutting down a tree and cooking weenies and marshmellows, I would have gotten Lucky-Pierre in against him and won this league going away.
So I guess my failing is focusing on my family more than the league "conservatives". So be it.

Thanks a lot guys. I was hoping to just make the playoffs, and then I figure anyone has a chance. You know its your year:
When you need your RB to score three TD's on Sunday night in the finals.......and he does. Including one in OT.
When your DB runs a kickoff back for a TD and you win your semifinal by 7 points. Sorry Coach Baldwin.
When you bench Kurt Warner in the finals and pickup the SF QB and start him.....and it actually works out.
When your QB and RB both score two TD's in separate games with less than 4:04 left in the game.
When you win your playoffs by 32 points........for all 3 rounds.
Cinderella story. Thanks to PV for the invite, Taxman for doing the waivers, and everyone else for keeping up with their teams. Hope to be back next year.

With Yahoo football now open for leagues for the new season, it is time to tender my own resignation from the league. The last couple of years I've just been mailing it in. Time to give up the slot. Good luck, fellas.

Football has always been my weakest sport for a lot of reasons (short season, lack of consistent production from even very good players, etc). Last year I lost pretty much every close match I was involved in, plus having both my defensive keepers go out before the season, and there is really no incentive anymore for me.

wow. Stat Tracker is free this year...and there are some other nifty features as well.
other changes include - FINALLY - adding LBs to the IDP...
and, something really cool...
• Free Agent Acquisition Budgets (FAAB). If you'd rather be at the mercy of the waiver queue, that remains an option. But if you'd prefer to actively bid against other owners for the right to acquire, say, Andre Brown(notes) in Week 3, then you're in luck. Yahoo! Football '09 is fully FAAB compliant. (Pictured right). The highest bidder wins the player. Management of FAAB resources is tricky, but that's a subject for a later feature.
i think this is a feature we should explore, as the waiver wire exploitation has long been a huge complaint in this league...
