Time to start a new thread. Several horses going this week including two from my new stlcards2 stable. What am I thinking. 4 stables now? Next thing you know I'll be signing up for ASR, no, no, don't do it.

new runners:
Purple Park,4yo colt (Lil Tyler, Nureyev, Sadler's Wells), race 0605, 1mile dirt, on #2 jock in AR. Only a 6 horse race and at 3/1 tied for the second favorite. The favorite is a 90+ horse. Will take a great race to win this one. A test early on.

Mine Sharks, 4yo colt, (Avenue of Flags, Medieval Man, Frontal). Race 0307, 7f, dirt, the sim doesn't like this horse much at 23/1. Has the #3 jock in KY.

Other stables:
Only one worth mentioning is Sally Plow. Tried to sign her up for a dirt try and screwed it up. Went for a restricted allowance but she has only run two races. My backup was a turf try at 8.5f, race 2002. Didn't set the jockey and got stuck with a middle of the road one. Hopefully the spped from her last race (76SP) was just because she didn't need to run all out to win, but I doubt it. A try a 8.5f turf will be a good test.

BOL to all this week. I have several others running but nothing I'm too excited about. Wanted to try a few more options before sending them to claimers. The breeding is good, but the performance isn't there. One can only hope.

Quick note, stl cards...I recently got a message from ASR indicating that they will take me when their new "Premiership" starts end of Sept...so you might as well join right now and try to get in too.

8 going around this week, including one from my new stable,Out below the top..He actually hit the ground sharp...which i haven't had before...rated at 19/1 by cpu(2102)He is also the only one i didn't choose...
Paunchi's horses(0306)is probably the best of the runners this week...He is stepping up in distance and a jump in class as well,so really just hoping..The rest are either in claimers or msw...
Oh...Pepi undercut is back this week as well after a long layoff...

I've got a few going. Not even sure if they carded in -- my connection is slow and I'm not going to waste the time to check. Private Count and Brown Bro and Skin Jumping (two weeks in a row) should all be taking to the course.

Not only did my hard drive and stuff fall apart, but I've got a huge lead in my ASR division with 2 weeks left. For the most part, I've been backing WAYYYY off on my horses to start off the next premiership stronger. We'll see.

The buzz in the Toral Multicomplex this week is the return of Hank's Rattles afre his 108, in a nw1x $28.3 allownace in New York 0405. The computer thinks he's for real, making him the 9-5 favourite. In this field even Hank's 2nd best 6f performance, 95, looks competitive. I don't have a good feeling about this one though.

Two of my recent 2-year old claim acquisitions go. Biter Don looks outclassed at 24-1 in 3205 Alabama. Deposit Burn is 9-1 in Virginia 1704.

14 horses going in all.

Oops, post #14 was supposed to be directed toward Twarpy.

It looks like my breeding attempt failed a few weeks ago, so I resubmitted it tonight. Hopefully it works this time. Been giving the mare some fertility drugs and took the condoms away from the sire this time.

I have a couple of more breeding attempts I want to try, one using a mare I picked up, but I really want to run her first to try to get the speeds up. A Green Desert mare. If her speeds don't go up I may just send her to the auction.

Well, I signed up and got my stable today. Thanks for the invitation Toral.

I must say that this is all a bit overwhelming. If any of you would care to look at my stable, I am in as winmiller (for some reason that name always seems to be available :-) I would appreciate any comments.

Anyhow, I guess the thing to do is set my four available horses to train for week 1166. Right? I'm in no rush to master this game, but I don't want to miss any early opportunities, either.

I read what you had to say to twarpy in the previous thread, but I'd be glad to hear any other advice. Specifically, I'm curious what you think I should be doing with the 25K I've been staked with.

Welcome aboard winmiller! Pretty soon we'll need our own horse racing forum. I'm having problems getting into the sim right now so I can't check your stable out just yet. It is a bit overwhelming at first, but you'll get the hang of it. Feel free to ask even minor questions, I know you'll have them. It takes awhile just to figure out how to find races, claimers, results, etc. Too bad Madman is fighting his computer as he has this sim down pretty well it seems, of course so do others. I'm a bit slow myself.

I would spend some time reading through the directions or articles under the misc link. To start with you will enter your horses in Maiden Special Weight "MSW" races until you either get a win or think they can't win. If your horse wins at MSW, then you move up to allowance races which gets much harder to win. There are restricted allowance races such as NW2L (non-winner of 2 lifetime) and many others, like track restricted (horse had to have raced last at that track), homebreds only, etc. The crown jewel so to speak is to get some allowance wins and then win at the stakes level (very hard to do, none of my horses can do it). Alternatively, if your horse can't win at MSW or does but can't win at allowance races, then you go down to claimer races. These races have lower competition, but be warned you can also lose your horse for the price of the claiming race. As you race, you will learn about the restrictions, conditions, etc. Typically you race females in female only races, 3yo's only against other 3yo's, but you don't have to. Use the find races link to see what races you might want to enter. You then enter the race from the entry matrix usually. You can sign up for 2 races. Click on the ad from the mystable link to get activity points and usually you will get your first entry.

A common strategy with racing is to try to find out what your horse likes in terms of distance and surface. Some horses like short races on dirt while others prefer long on turf, etc. If your horse doesn't do well on dirt then try him on turf at the same distance to see if he likes that better. Or maybe change the length to see if he likes that better. You can also drop to a lower purse for easier competition. Madman wrote a series of articles describing what it takes to get wins at different types of races. It might be on Coker's site? accessible from the links page I believe. Someone can probably post the link or you can scan some of the threads from a few weeks back and find it.

As you race and your horses finish in the money "ITM" then you will start to accumulate breeding points (BP). These are not activity points which are reset each week. The BP's are used when you are ready to breed a horse yourself. I wouldn't worry about breeding right now, but try to get BP's and pay attention when selecting races as to travel costs. It can cost both $$ and BP's to travel. I always try to travel for 0 BP's and less than about $300 if possible.

You'll catch on quick. There is also a message board in the sim where you can post questions, although I rarely use it.

Hope this helps get you started. BOL :)

Some nice horses there Winmiller...I think....I am no expert on the breeding but having Storm cat and Mr P in the lines would give you some hope of them turning out okay...The most success(limited as it is!)i have had is to debut them in a 6-6.5 furlong race and then a 7-8.5 furlong race(after a rest)on the same surface...from there you can get some idea which distances they might prefer..After that a shot on the opposite surface(preferably at the distance your horses ran best at previously)to see what surface is preferred...The first 5-7 races are pretty much experiment races until you sort out where they belong..(it may take that long to find out he loves marathon races for eg)...I would aim for mid to high msw first off(20-40k)...That's probably open for debate though...Get those activity points..there is a whole lot of competition for female maiden races, especially 3yo's..
As for the money....Try and build it up by betting...You will need it for claiming horses...and (if you get enough)going to the auction and purchasing horses...
The link to Madmans' article doesn't seem to be working at the moment..It is well worth reading once the link is fixed...
Thats some of the thoughts i have,of course i stand to be corrected..:)

As far as my nags went this week....3 itm from 8 starters...(1st,2nd,3rd)..Not bad but not great either..The rest finished 4th,5th or 6th...Nothing exceptional as far as sp's go...I lost American car in a claim race...He was an okay sort of horse so i am a bit mad about even entering him in a claim!..Oh well...
8 starting this week from my original stables plus i will give the other 3 from my new stable a race this week..

Here is a summary of week 1159 the best that I can tell. A caveat is that any horse claimed from a stable is not included and a new claimer horse is included. I didn't sort that out. Sorry if others ran horses that I missed or I didn't get all the stables. Looks like cab and Toral both had good weeks to me.

Toral 1 2 1 3 14 102.7

In their first races, Purple Park ran a 76SP and Mine Sharks ran an 80SP. Not exactly the upper 90's I was dreaming of (they were sharp). Surprisingly Mine Sharks came back sharp again. I always wonder what that is telling me? The horse needs to run longer? Didn't try? Needs a different surface? An 80SP is not exactly dogging it. I guess I'll go ahead and run again this week, just not sure where.

Twarpy and Winmiller, do you have any sharp horses this week? Sometimes in the first race you just have to run them ready to go, before they will become sharp.

Help! Toral was directing me and I filled in where I want my horses, but my memory is awful, and hence why I rely on SSB unprocessed commands. The point being now I need to select jockies but I cant remember what region my horses are running :)
