SportingNews.com is proud to present...

Strat-O-Matic Baseball Online!

The official online game of Strat-O-Matic Baseball is the hottest thing to hit fantasy sports gaming in a long while.

In a nutshell, this game is a new breed of fantasy baseball where you not only play as General Manager of your team, drafting and trading your players, but you also play as Manager, deciding your starting lineups and pitching rotations, and playing actual simulated baseball games on your way to the pennant! No more "fantasy points" or abstract units of measurement... you have one simple baseball goal - to win games.

You'll draft a team of 25 players and join a 12-team league. Each day you can offer and accept trades with other teams, pick up free agents, scout your opposition, change your starting lineups, shuffle your pitching rotations and adjust your managerial style. Each night a 3-game series is simulated and the next morning you'll be able to review boxscores and recap stories of your games and pore over more statistics than you'll know what to do with.

Never played Strat-O-Matic Baseball before? No problem. All you need are a little bit of baseball smarts and a lot of drive.

Come see what the buzz is about!

This game sounds like a lot of fun, but to be honest, i have never played or even hear of the board game TSN refers too. Will I be completely lost if I have no experience?

Oh, i guess the original post answers my question.
Just wondering, are there any prizes for this game?

Yep. $50 goes to the team with the best regular season record, and the runner up gets a free season play.

How many other teams do you have to compete with to win the 50 bucks?

I would assume that the $50 is per league.

One last question, and it may have already been posted somewhere, but when does this game start? Or does it start as soon as the 12 team league is created.

1. Select your 25 players.
2. Join a league.
3. When the league fills with 12 teams who all have selected their players, a draft is run to resolve conflicts and enforce exclusive ownership.
4. The season starts within several days after that.
5. The 162-game season lasts for 8 weeks.

A perfect10: yes, 12 teams per League.

Helluva marketing concept, Erik! For those who like it, a chance to donate $25 couple of times a year as opposed to just once!! I am sincerely in awe.

I grew up on Stratomatic, and this will likely be an awesome game. Too bad there is only so much time in life to play these games (and Strat is very addictive...). Smallworld will come first, but maybe next year I will do both. Aaaah, the memories. Good going, Bernie and Erik.

I also grew up playing Stratomatic (baseball was the best, but also basketball and football). The game looks great. I was able to read all about it last night thanks to Shelby.

Disappointed by 2 things though:
1. The game/series is simulated overnight. One of the best parts of playing Strato was the game itself, not just waking up and reading about it.
2. The cost of $24.95 is way too steep for me. I know, I know, and I don't need an explanation for it, as I'm sure it is "justified" on your end guys. But, that's out of my league.

Fair enough points. We think the $24.95 price-point is worth it -- that the game is sufficiently complicated, engrossing, etc. We also know that it's 50% less than the next-best-product out there, Diamon Legends. But I totally understand your point -- this product isn't for everyone and we thought that it would be a mistake to discount the price down just to get people in the door.

Mike D (boyeeeeeee!). I have read nothing as I am far too lazy even to read Shelby's posts, but you got my attention. Do you mean to say that that basically, managers set their lineup's and the games are played for them? I mean, that's like taking away half the fun! So, you don't decide to switch pitchers, pinch hit, steal, bunt, hit and run, take an extra base, etc? No, I cannot believe that. That would be strat heresy.

Erik/Bernie: Is this true? Not that I am playing, but as a Strat-o-matic man, I know that actually playing the game is at least half the challenge (e.g. the 'ol, "should I leave RJ pitching in the 8th when he is now 'tired,' and his strikeouts now have turned into the dreaded 'single double asterisks'?!?!?").

thanks for my mini-rant.

Walk- you set the tendencies before the game to determine what the coach does during the game. It's pretty detailed on what settings you can set (look at FAQ for more info).

So in a nutshell, no you don't actually play the game as a coach but more as an owner/GM. Hopefully the tendencies will cover most of what you would have done anyway. Besides, in some ways its an advantage to be able to breeze by 162 games in 2 months while maintaining most of the "flavor" of the game.

Gotcha Shelby-Villian (always one of my fave monikers, by the way...). That makes sense. It would be logistically difficult for TSN to set it up so that everyone was actively "playing," and these "tendencies" you mention (none of them suicidal, I hope...music band) seem to be a good workaround.

I actually did go ahead and read the other Strat thread (but not the FAQ, but I will) and it seems that this game has a lot of details built in. And it surely seems that Erik is quite enthusiatic about it.

I am intrigued and somewhat inclined to play, but am not sure I'll be able to devote the time. I have no way of truly knowing what kinda time commitment is involved...
