Notice these? I was thinking we should do them for Gurupies. Not sure we should do all the categories, but here's a start:
2 Year Old Overall, Male, and Filly 3 Year Old Overall, Male, and Filly, Turf, Dirt, Sprinter, Route Older Horse Overall, Male, Filly, Turf, Dirt, Sprinter, Route
Thus up to 17 horses could be honored, although most likely there would be some serious overlap.
Other ideas / comments? I'll get to posting the updated list of Gurupie Horse Stats -- the final one for 2001. |

Excellent idea. I haven;t looked at other gurupie stables for a while and this would be a good excuse to start.

I've been doing some analysis, and hereby present my "votes". . .
2 Year Olds:
There are some slim pickings here. Although we have a ton of horses, we don't have a lot of quality. I guess that's pretty typical.
MALE 2 Year Old Finalists: Ally's Logic leads the Mad Power Rankings, aided by a perfect ITM percentage. He placed in a stake race, and has a bright future.
Secret Society Fastest two pure speed ratings, winner of two stakes races, leading money winner, although Ally's Logic has a higher cash per race total. Downside is the failure to place in 3 races -- sprints and turf tries.
Snow Storm Fastest turf 2 year old, has gone 7-1-1-2.
Chief Coy Only Gurupie 2 year old to run an allowance race, nice 5-1-0-2 record.
Sutter's Creek solid 78.4 speed rating at 8f pushes this horse into the finalist arena.
... My Vote: Secret Society -- Based on pure speed as well as two great Stakes race performances. Only Gurupie horse with multiple wins, this guy has already notched three victories. ------------------ FEMALE 2 Year Old Finalists Key West of madman4 stables, this filly hasn't won yet, but cranked a 79.4 speed rating.
Luna of toral2 stables, this horse is 1 for 1.
Broke Night leading female money winner.
My Winner: Broke Night. A solid 79.4 speed rating, but the key was the 25K in earnings.
Overall 2 Year Old: Secrety Society.
Note: My choice for turf horse is Snow Storm, a narrow call over City O'Gold. And for dirt runner, I'd go Secret Society. ________________________________________ THREE YEAR OLD AWARDS
Because there are more categories here, I won't list all my finalists.
Male: Clam Carnival(ire) from cab stables. This judicious claimer has proven his worth with a dramatic Stakes victory in week 1110. A reliable 90+ speed performer, he's one of the top Gurupie horses in money earned (8th), and one of our 100+ speed horses, notching a 102.4.
Honorable Mention goes to the surface versatile Sal at the Bell -- leading money winner for three year olds, and owner of an 8-2-3-1 record. ----- Female: Tsultress from Madman4 stables. This was a two horse race, with the main competition coming from larot's Dan's Forest. I gave the nod to Tsultress since they have identical W-P-S tallies, but Tsultress has done it in 4 fewer races. ----- Turf: Tsultress. ----- Dirt: Clam Carnival(ire) ----- Overall: Clam Carnival(ire) ----- Routes: Clam Carnival(ire) ----- Sprints: No selection. Although there are some fine horses in this category, I don't see any that have really distinguished themselves from the rest. _____________________________________________ OLDER HORSES: MALE and OVERALL: Kangaroo Minstrel(ire) from toral2 stables. This was a hotly contested race, with challenges coming from the undefeated Parade Shooting(gb), the up and coming Light Award, Turf specialist Jericho Velvet and the first Gurupie horse to go 90+, Light Jupiter. But Kangaroo definitely deserves this award, with 5 wins -- a gurupie record (tied with Hero Grub) -- two awesome Stakes wins, $123K in earnings, the fastest MAD rating recorded to date, as well as the fastest raw speed rating recorded by a Gurupie horse.
Female: Hero Grub. This horse was also a finalist for the overall award in this category. A solid 83K in earnings and 5 wins to her credit, this fine filly is a deserving recipient. Honorable Mention to Private Count (10 top 3's in 13 starts), Country Jodie (2 allowance wins).
Sprinter: This is a very hard category to judge, with Jericho Velvet, Light Award, Light Jupiter and others recording some excellent times. I'm giving the award to Light Jupiter because of his awesome consistency -- he has 12 90+ speed ratings to his credit -- 3 more than his nearest Gurupie competitor in this category. The #2 horse in earnings, he also owns a solid 105.1 max speed rating.
Routes: Parade Shooting. Technically, Kangaroo Minstrel(ire) should maybe win this award, but I'm giving it to the undefeated Parade Shooting, who has shown serious endurance talent all the way up to 16f. _________________________________________ OTHER:
BEST DRAFT HORSE: Kangaroo Minstrel BEST HOMBRED: Secret Society BEST CLAIM: Clam Carnival(ire) _________________________________________
OVERALL HORSE OF THE YEAR: This prestigious title goes to Kangaroo Minstrel(ire). A dominating set of races makes this horse a worthy selection for this first-ever honor. ______________________________________ Last comment: It has been awhile since I checked out all these stables. I'm actually shocked at just how many quality horses we have in some of the above categories now!
Also, I'm rather amazed at the differences between the rankings I have now and the ones JKaye and I did back in the summer.
Lastly, 2002 has already started off with a bang, it would appear, with a new Gurupie Record speed rating by Sixth Deputy -- a 110 on Turf! Congrats! Looks like the competition for 2002's Older Horse Eclipse Awards is starting hot and heavy!
