I agree Coach...

Wow! I came into this season not expecting to compete and my team rewards me with an opening "day" sweep of the Mets. I still don't think I'll finish above .500 this year, but it was nice to see my rookie DH get 4 HR's and 8 RBI in the first 4 games. He leads the league in homers, RBI, and slugging. My pitching staff was #2 in the league last year, but was failed constantly by my offense, which hit a paltry .233 last year. This year, if my offense can stay average, as it is now, I have a shot at the division title. My pitching has improved from last year and now leads the league with a meagre 1.89 ERA. Granted, I did play the Mets, who didn't have a great season last year, but things are looking up :)

Good luck to all this year...

That is a great start for you, chris. You definatly have some talent but you have a few holes to fill before becoming the TOP team in the WEST. Right now the division is up in the air, no team is all that great. It is going to be a fun year.

After leading the league in hitting last year, Coglin and I decided to cut our hitting salary for this year. We lost 3 of our big bats, but hopefully we still have enough pop to contend, especially with a revamped bullpen. Good luck to everyone.

I hope Rangel work out for ya Coach

Thanks for rubbing it in Chris...made a couple of stupid moves in the offseason by spending to much money on a team that still has no chance. Now I need 3 SP, and a whole new lineup before I challenge...that 12 million signing bonus...stupid, stupid, stupid.

All I have to say is...wow!

OK, I've never really left a post short, so here goes...

My team goes 26-38 last year, tied for the worst record in the NL. My team hits .233, betraying my #2 pitching staff. In the off season, 2 of my best hitters retire. It must have been a blessing in disguise. As of right now, the 2 replacements from AAA are doing better than I could have possibly imagined. One of them is hitting .393, 6th in the league. The other leads the league easily with 5 homers and an .821 SLG. Add all of this to the league's #1 pitching staff, and my DisAstros won the first 7 games of the season before being humbled 11-0 in the 8th. Granted, my team is WAY ahead of schedule, and I feel they won't finish much better than .500 this year. Also, I did play 2 of the 3 worst teams of last year in the NL(the other team was me ;-)). But like I've said, if I can even get mediocre hitting, I've got a shot with my pitching. Add this to a #3 draft pick this year and what will be a $110M payroll by the end of season 3, and i'm feeling pretty good about my franchise :)

Good luck to all this season...

Synnoco is going to get a HUGE gate receipt tonight for our game. I'm 7-1 and he's 6-2...I wish I was at home. It seems to me that I play bad teams at home and good teams on the road...Synocco presents a big challenge for me tonight. Last season, he beat me 3-1 in both of our series. I'm just hoping to split, although I will likely lose 3 again, as his team is superior to mine...

I'm green with envy...

I wish that game with Synocco/Coglin was at home. The road team makes 10% of what the home team makes. I made $568K. Synocco/Coglin's Cubbies received $5.68M for our little showdown. I guess we both got what we wanted and expected...a split. My team hit like it did last year in the 2 games I lost. I lost 2-0, 2-0 with 6 hits combined in those games. All 4 games were close. Not very surprising as the Cubbies and I have the top 2 ERA's in the ML. The Cubs games have been SO close that there closer has saved 7 of their 8 wins. I'm liking my closer though. He's 23 and has given up only 2 hits and no runs in his 5 appearances. It feels nice to have the best record in the league, although I know I won't stay their for long, but I have opened up a 4 game lead already with Coach's Dodgers getting swept by the Cards. The East is a tough division once again, with 3 teams tied for first with an 8-4 record...

It's kind of funny how this paralells real life baseball. The league's top 5 team ERA's are in the NL. But we can't attribute this to the DH ;-)

Next up for me are the 3-9 White Sox. The Cubs were my first test of the season and I passed, in that I didn't fail, going 2-2. Hopefully this means that I've got a shot at contending this year with my $25M payroll...

Good luck to you all this coming "week".

ummmm...I'm supposed to start losing anyday now. I really didn't expect to compete this year, but I find myself with the best record in baseball. Obviously, I've benefited greatly from my cupcake schedule. I've faced the 4-12 White Sox, the 4-12 mets, the 5-11 Padres, and the 10-6 Cubs(against whom I earned a split). But, I'm starting to think my hot start may not be a fluke. The next 20 games should give me a very good indicator of where stand. I play the Dodgers, who are 7-9, but are greatly underachieving. Every member of their lineup has AVG over 400 and their starting staff is great. Next up: the 11-5 Braves, the 9-7 Cards, the 10-6 Cubs, and then the defending NL West champs, the Giants.

Now, why is my team 12-4 after being 26-38 last year? Besides the aforementioned cupcake schedule, I have 2 rookies that are batting about .330, my pitching staff is BY FAR the best in baseball with a 2.84 ERA, and my closer is 1-0 with 7 saves and an ERA of 2.00. Also, my 4-3 loss today marked the first time I had lost when scoring a run. My previous 3 losses were by shutout(twice to the Cubs). My team has improved their team ERA my a full run and their batting average from an abysmal .233 to a respectable .279. I have managed to open up a 5 game lead over the Dodgers and this 4 game series will be big. The ratings say that they should be better than me, but that will be determined in this series. I'm juts looking for a split, as I always do when facing a good team.
Good luck to all, except the Dodgers ;-)

Are you ready for some baseball?

This series will show us where we both stand (LA vs Hou). I am underachieving so far but, I am going to have an easier schedule starting tomorrow lasting for a few weeks. I better cut in to that 5 game lead.

Good luck to all, except the Dodgers

Ugh, I didn't expect the Cubs hitting to be this bad... everyone in my lineup has a contact over 430, but we've gone from the best hitting team in the league to the worst. There are many teams that have a batting average higher than my team slugging percentage... a pitiful .333. On the bright side, our pitching has gone from the league's worst to one of the best, though we've faced several soft-hitting teams so far. Hopefully the addition of Wonderful Monds to the team will ignite the spark needed.

The Poor Man's Juggernaut rolls on!

The Astros are stretching their $25M payroll to the max, taking 3 of 4 from Coach's Dodgers and opening up a 7 game lead in the division. The pitching continues to be the focal point as they lower their ML-leading team ERA to 2.73 by shutting out the Dodgers twice. Rookie of the Year Candidate John McDonald homered again to stay tied for the ML lead in homers. McDonald also increased his SLG to .667 which leads the league, .004 ahead of early MVP favorite, Chad Hermanson(.505 OBP!!) of the Braves. Cy Young Candidate Sean Bergman(probably 2nd to the Cubs' Bartolo Colon) shut out the Dodgers for 8 innings, improving to 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA.

Oddly, the Dodgers have THREE Ramirez's on their team(Manny, Aramis, and...Erasmo). Manny and Aramis bat back-to-back, so you get something like...Ramirez singles, Ramirez homers, Ramirez scores, Ramirez scores ;-)

I really wish I were in Chaik's shoes right now. My 15-5 Astros are coming in to face his 13-7 Braves. He will make a TON of money off of this. Like I said before, I play good teams on the road, adn bad teams at home, so I rarely make as much money as I'd like.

The defending NL champion Braves present on awesome challenge that my youngsters won't shy away from. The Braves seem to have more talent than I(but so did the Dodgers) and I'll be hard pressed to earn a split I believe. A split would be awesome for me, but realistically, I'll probably lose 3. I guess I'm a pessimist, I can't understand how 2 rookies could raise my BA from .233 to .286 in one year. I'll say this, the Braves are the first potent offensive team I will face this year. They lead the pitching-rich NL in runs scored and are tied for the best batting average. I can see my 2.73 ERA rising after tomorrow. I'm loving my position, because if I make the playoffs this year, I'll have SOOOO much money to work with in the offseason to sign FA's. I'm sure my team will crumble this year, but I don't think I can possibly blow a 7 game lead...can I?

Good luck to you all again tomorrow, except Chaik ;-) (this seems to work, I'm sticking with it ;-))

darkside - I hope you had fun with the games this week, you got yourself a sweep of the White Sox in convincing style. It's gotta be a good feeling winning by a combined score of 38-13. Wow!

Chaik - yeah. Secretly I was expecting a sweep, but didn't want to jinx it/get my hopes up. Splitting with both you and Synocco's Cubs has me feeling good enough about my team that I feel I will compete this year despite of my $25M payroll. One more showdown is in order.

This week I take on the 14-10 Cardinals, and if I show that I can compete with them, then I will look to add another OF to my squad by the trade deadline. Please let me know if you have a star OF(AVG over 430, or 400+ with good speed) that you would like to trade for prospects or cash.

I "held" the best offense in the NL to 4.5 runs per game in this series(previously averaging over 5 runs per game), while knocking around their 2nd ranked NL pitching staff for 5.25 per game. My own "Mr Automatic" closer, Blake Mayo stretched his season stats to 3-0, 7 saves, 1.64 ERA(would be 1-0, 9 saves, but for the scoring glitch). My rookie hit his league leading 7th homer and kept his slugging percentage as the best in the ML. I'm starting to get a little annoyed, though. Once again, I was on the road for a big showdown. The Braves received $4.5M or so for this series after the Cubs got $5.68M for a series between us earlier this year. I've yet to make more than $3.5M or so for a series, but that record should be broken when my best record in baseball goes against the Cards this week. There's no place like home...

The Dodgers and Giants both took 3 of 4 and they have cut my division lead to 6. I would hope to at least keep it at 6 this week as I hope to earn a split from the Cards(there, I said it).

On a side note, congrats to the Mariners amd the Orioles for leading their respective divisions with a 16-8 record. I don't follow the AL in GSB, much like real life. You guys aren't getting your due despite the fact that you guys are looking like solid contenders once again...

Well...

I got my split, and I kept my 6 game lead despite only scoring 6 runs in the entire series. So I guess I'm happy :)

My closer is unstoppable this year. 1-0, 1.38 ERA, 11 saves, 8 hits in 13 IP. He's only 23! But this success is gonna cost me come contract time. He's making only $300K right now and his agent is not happy about that :)

I still havn't lost a series this year. it's funny, I don't remember winning one last year... ;-)

Mr. Blonde - Now you have a 5 game lead. I'm sure you won't choke that away... ;-) Anyway, I'll try to help, as I play the Yankees soon. I'll try to keep 'em off of your tail...

It will be interesting to see the moves everybody makes down the stretch run. I'm looking to acquire an OF, and I'm sure the rest of you contenders have holes that need to be filled. How stocked are your farm systems though? You'll need to be able to offer something to get something in return...

Chris-congratulations on your success so far this year, and congrats on being independently wealthy. You must be, with all the time you have to write up your recaps. Keep them coming-also, does anyone else have computer problems when ranking draft prospects? Whenever I try, my computer goes schizo after 5 minutes, and I have to reboot the whole thing.

When I went tonight, the draft wouldn't even come up, saying there was a "Microsoft-Based Error", or something like that. It actually happened to me last season as well, and my draft definitely suffered as a result. Go Orioles!

I see there is another Ramirez and he is a Free-Agent, possibly! I am talking about Julio Ramirez on the Mariners. If I would acquire him, I would have an outfield of Ramirez in right, Ramirez in center and Ramirez in left. Don't forget I have Ramirez (Aramis) in the bullpen.

Now it looks as if HOU is going in to a weak schedule. Damn!

Chris--It did feel kinda good, but it makes me realize how terrible ChiSox pitchers are, cause my hitters shouldn't put up that many runs. It was a week of upsets in the L2 League:

- The best team in the AL, the Mariners, lost 3 of 4 from the worst team in the ML, the White Sox. The White Sox improved to 7-25...

- The next best AL team, the Orioles, got swept by the Yankees and lost all but 1 game of their 5 game lead over the Yanks.

- The Mets, who are in the cellar in the competitive NL East, swept the Cards, who were 4 games above .500 coming into the series.

- the Braves, the 2nd best team in the NL(hehehe) lost 3 of 4 to the Cubbies, who closed within 2 games of the high-flying Braves.

Me? I earned a split. I am the splitting machine, not to confused with the spitting machine, Roberto Alomar. I maintained my 6 game lead in the division. I have a tough road ahead the next 2 series, playing the Cubs and Yankees, who are a combined 35-29 this season. My franchise record against the Cubs is 5-7, but I've taken 3 of 4 this year. Hopefully I can split the next 2 series, because I then get to face the Mets and Padres, who are having their troubles this year. It seems my pitching is too consistent this year for me to lose my 6 game lead, but anything is possible. We're halfway through the season, here are the awards I would give(NL only...sorry)

MVP: Chad Hermanson - Braves - leads nearly every category

ROY: John McDonald - Astros - batting .320, first in homers, first in SLG

CY: Sean Bergman - Astros - leads league in ERA, first in IP, 4th in K's(Clemens is a VERY close second)

Manager of the Year: Chris - Astros - worst record in NL to best record in ML...enough said

Nice outing last night by Chaik's Jeremy Callier, another Cy Young candidate on the Braves. What a steal off the waiver wire! Threw 8 innings of no hit ball, but then left the game and saw a reliever give up 3 hits in the ninth to kill the no-hit bid. It was exciting to watch, even though the Cubs were on the wrong end of it for the whole game!

ugh...

Well...

It could have been worse. I earned my split with the Cubbies(again) and kept my 6 game lead, but it was very unfulfilling to say the least. I won the first 2 games(saved by my closer, Blake Mayo), and seemed to be well on my way to winning the 3rd. It's not oftne that I lose a 4-1 lead in the 8th, but it happened. It's not often I score 6 runs and lose, but it happened. Mayo gives up 2 in the 9th to tie it at 4. Mayo gives up 2 more! I score 2 to get him off teh hook in the bottom, but I still lose 7-6 in 11. After that, my team just gave up in the 4th. I got beat 6-2 and the Cubbies had their split.

Now I have to regroup and beat the Yankees, who look very strong offensively. My pitchers havn't been knocked around all season, so this should be a good series.

Hey Dodgers...where are you? I thought you would win this division going away, especially after you traded for Rangel. But it seems you are underacheiving greatly and find yourself 8 games back. Good luck the rest of the way...I have a sinking suspicion that the manager will be fired if the team doesn't make the playoffs a la Davey Johnson ;-)

How did your draft go? I was surprised that the 12-star prospect was left for me to take at #3. I do believe I understand why, as he carries some big flaws...he is already 23, his fastball is 290, and his stamina is a terrible 351. I still think this guy will be an ace of considerable success, maybe only a 7 inning ace though...Something very strange happened in my draft. In the 15 rounds, I selected 15 pitchers!!! What the heck was that all about? It isn't like I ranked all of the pitchers first, I had a very reasonable mix of hitters, the computer just didn't pick any of 'em!!

Good luck to you guys

HELP! I'm on a sinking ship!

You see the problem is... well, in the club house!!! Ramirez doesn't like the second Ramirez who doesn't like the third Ramirez who doesn't like first Ramirez. And the second Ramirez likes the first Ramirez but not the third Ramirez and well....You see my problem!

Honestly, my pitching isn't nearly as good as last year even with a few key additions (Bluma, Rangel) and my offense is horrible. Either I score 8+ runs of I can even scratch out a run. I added Ordonez, Manny Ramirez (who is injured), Dan Ramirez and Hundley. That is the heart of my lineup.

Bottom line is a HUGE Payroll doesn't always win. I have a number of players (pitchers) on the block in the majors and minors.

I sent an email to every owner to clearify the RAMOS contract situation.

Well.. I have to say I'm pretty disappointed in my draft. Cairo was a pretty good prospect, but probably only 3rd round quality, but I get to spend a million on him instead. By the way, I'm shopping around my fourth starter, JC Romero. I'm looking for prospects in return.

Chris, I was thinking about taking that pitcher with my #2 pick. It was very tempting, but I just wasn't sure he'd develop quickly enough, considering his age, and what his #'s were at right now. You may have gotten a steal there, if he develops to his full potential.

Overall, I thought the quality of players was not quite as good as in the first draft.

I put pitchers as a preminum in my dreat, Thus, I drafted 2 pitchers. How did that happen? I guess HOU took them all. I feel I had another solid draft. There didn't seem to be many All-Star potential players out there.

On a side note: I hope to make a decision on the RAMOS trade by late SUNDAY night after the games are played. Right now, NY holds the best bid. Besides that, i guess being in the AL will help his chances a little but, the best offer will win. I have also had offers from ATL, HOU, CHiCubs so far.

A past trade in my division: Bergman is killing me in his CyYoung bid for HOU. But the difference is he refused to sign with me. The poor ba$tard is now in first place! And now I am paying for his greed!!!

Coach..., I(HOU) did not send you a trade offer for Ramos. Maybe you have me confused with somebody else.

My eyes lit up when you offered me Bergman. He was only 25 when you traded him to me and hopefully he will be good for a LOOOOONG time ;-). We all make trades we regret... Before I realized that AVG was the most important rating, I traded Brett Caradonna(AVG 483 IIRC) to the Braves. He is batting .355 this year and he is only 29. grrrrrr. Thanks for taking advantage of my inexperience Chaik, I appreciate it ;-)

Bergman is only making $3.6M a season for the next 5 years. I KNOW he's going to bomb the next 5 and make it a complete waste of money, but if he continues to perform at this level, he was a steal for the price.

With the trade deadline approaching, I made 2 moves to solidify my weak OF. I only need to make one more trade before I feel secure. I need a first baseman. If any of you are willing to part with one, I have TONS of cash, and a few prospects in my minors that you might want to look at...

Put me in... I just "placed a bid" on Ramos that I think is better than NY's...

Ramos was traded to NY. I have KING out on the block (RP). I have offered a few trades around.

CHALK - Was your trade offered after I made my trade? It had to be close, I don't remember seeing it, sorry!

Check out my bullpen (MLB) as well as (AAA). I have great depth in pitching.

Both offers were close but I still might give a slight edge to NY's offer. But it is close.

I wouldn't mind some straight offer for some of my players. I have too much depth at most positions in my minors.

The Great Splitting Machine Rolls On

Well...

I split my 5th consecutive series, but for the second consecutive time, I was very disappointed. My formally reliable bullpen blew another one. I blew a 4-0 lead in the last 3 innings, and my closer blew a save for the 2nd consecutve week. I ended up losing that game, 5-4 in 11 innings. I've been replaced by the Mariners for best record in baseball. I'm one game back of them, but have managed to open up a 7 game lead in my division.

I'm not sure about you other guys, but I've been busy as the trade deadline approaches. I managed to swing a deal with the Yankees for a 26 year old OF with 473 AVG, and I also traded for Kenny Lofton (497 AVG) of the Giants, bolstering the two weakest links on my team. I feel like I'll have a good contender in the playoffs(I'm assuming I'll make the playoffs up 7 games with 24 to play and an easy schedule...). I still have one more weakness that needs to be addressed. My bullpen could really use Ray King...Coach, let me know what you need for him, though I'm not going to give up any starters for him as I'm trying to compete this year. Keep in mind, my greatest asset is cash...

Next up on the schedule are the Padres and Mets, who have a combined record of 29-51. Hopefully I can pad my record so that I can make more money from teh upcoming series with Chaik's Braves, who suddenly find themselves one game back of the Cards in the division. Guess who the Braves face next...the Cardinals. This is a key series for both teams and could go a long way in deciding the NL East pennant race. The Cards are lucky enough to be hosting this seris. The gate should be big...

Good luck to you guys down the stretch...

CHRIS - I can always use cash. I am down around 40mil in the bank, I wouldn't mind adding a few bucks to that pile. I have a few deals in the works involving him for players but cash would be great also. Make a bid if you wish.

Well, I'm officially done. I wasn't paying attention and I didn't set my draft--and I had the first pick. Thanks for the fun. But I'm outta GSB.

Sorry to see you go darkside, are you sure you won't reconsider? You're only 2 games out and one bad draft isn't going to kill you. Mine was terrible last year and I'm (likely)going to the playoffs this year after going 26-38 last year and then cutting payroll. This game is really fun, and it would be a shame for you to quit over one draft. Whatever you decide, thanks for playing, we enjoyed it. Good luck in SW ;-)

The Braves are back in first after taking 3 of 4 from the leading Cards.... watch out now. Sorry for the new ID# by the way, I deleted my temp. folder contents to free up space, and the cookies went with it.

Thanks for making me feel missed, but I'd been neglecting my team anyway, and I hate doing things half-assed. I already wrote the Commish and told him to remove my team. Sorry for bailing and thanks for the fun.

Well, we just sold the farm in a push to get to the postseason. Cubs acquire Orioles ace Erickson in exchange for a package of young talents in a last minute trade... It was actually completed after the sims last night. Amazing part of the deal is that the Orioles are currently tied for first place in their division. But Mr Blonde would probably have lost Erickson for nothing at the end of the season. Now I just have to talk Erickson out of retirement for a couple of years.

It's post season or bust for the Cubbies. :)

Yeah, he wouldn't negotiate so we had to move him. I've got eight million SP prospects, and I really needed a young C and 2B. I think I've still got a shot at the playoffs, even without the traitorous Erickson. Man, I sure hope "traitorous" is a word.

I also posted this at the Message Forum:

I just split an L2 record 8th consecutive series tonight versus Chaik's Braves. I believe I'm the only team to have never lost a series this year. So now, with my playoff berth all but assured(6 games up, 12 to play), I have to size up my ability to get into the WS. The 3 teams that I might face in the NLCS are the Braves(30-22), Cubs(29-13), and the Cardinals(29-13). I've completed my season series with the first 2, and I finish my series with the Cards tomorrow. I split both series with the Braves and Cubs and split the first series with the Cardinals(big surprise, huh? :P). So how the heck do I know what the NLCS matchup will look like? One things for almost certain. It will not be a sweep!! So who will win the monstrous NL East? Well...the Cubs probably have the best chance of deciding it for themselves, as they play both the Braves and the Cards to end the season. They have the toughest schedule, though. The Braves have the easiest. Besides facing the Cubs, they get the Padres and Mets, the 2 worst teams in the NL. In addition, the Braves have a one game lead. Unless they choke against the Padres and Mets, tehy should be able to win their second straight NL East title...but we'll see.
