do you rank each player from 1 to 5 or do you rate one player a 1, your next pick a 2, then your next best player a 3 and so on.....

or for instance can you rate more then one catcher a 1?

help i'm confused about how the draft rankings work.

thanks guru's!!

You can rank them however you want. I'll just make a guide so you might understand a little better.

1- 12/11 star prospects
2- 10 star prospects
3- 9 star prospects
4- 8 star prospects
5- 7 star prospects

This is just a guide, not something I really use but just to show you how one might rank the players. After you rank all of your 1's, 2's, 3's, 4's, and 5's, then you rank the players individually in their groupings.

For example.

You have a 12 star prospect and three 11 star prospects in your first grouping. Then you rank each player 1, 2, 3, and 4. That would be all of the players you ranked as 1's, then ranked in order.

Then in your second grouping you have fifteen 10 star prospects. You rank all of the players in that grouping 1-15. So you have all of your 2's in your 2nd grouping ranked in order.

And so on and so on.

Like I said you may look for different things in your prospects so you might have players with more stars in a higher grouping than players with less stars. Everyone is looking for a little bit different things when they draft. Hope this helped, good luck!

you CAN do this, but there's no telling who the simulator will pick. To be safe, decide which guy you'd rather have and rank them.

If you dont care who you get rank em all as #1 I guess.

The draft is a funny thing..not all star players come into rated with high stars...look around your league and see what some of the star players have for ratings. At times you will find the best players have 4 stars for average...1-2 stars for power and 2-3 stars for gap...judge your players on age and potential

If the second step in the ranking process seems a little daunting remember that as long as some of your last picks are 'best available' none of your picks will come from the groups 3,4 or 5 and in fact I'm pretty sure none of mine even came from the second group.

Don't even bother ranking your last three groups in the second step IMO.

Baldwin--Seeing as how the number of players each manager puts in each group can vary greatly, i would say that it is probably better to "not even bother" with ranking players after you have ranked a certain number of players and not after you have ranked a certain number of groups worth. This number probably depends a lot on how competitive your league is. In a non-competitive league, you can probably get away with ranking a lot fewer players to make sure that all 15 draftees were ranked players. In a very competitive league, you may have to rank quite a few more players.

Then again, you may not want to sign all 15 if you really are having to scrape the bottom of the barrell.

P.S. I have found that grouping at least 100-150 players and ranking 50+ of them will generally get you a very decent draft. Then again, if you inherited a team with a depleted farm system, you may want to rank more just to make sure you get 15 signable picks.

I had the help of Bean Dip and others' advice (thank you) in my draft, and it went well, I think.

Here's my advice:

1) 1st rank your very top players. Almost nothing
wrong with them. There will only be between 5 and
20 of such players.

2) Look at your draft position. If you draft 12th
you know at least that you will get your 12th best
ranked player. Concentrate hard on ranking those
12 correctly, making sure that there's no inferior
player there. Make sure you will be happy about your 1st draft choice. If you are short of time,
this is where to concentrate it on.

2) Then put any remaining players (if any) from your first list at the bottom of your 1st grouping and rank them.

3) Now look at the next best
series of guys. Hitter prospects should have 4
stars on average, unless they have 3 stars and are
superb in every category. This is your second
grouping. Put them all in it, and compare one against the other. Then rank them.

This is all the advice I have for now. Bean Dip's
prediction for my draft (based on the way I described it) was correct: I had 15 choices within
my first 3 groupings. It's really not necessary
to rank or rate any hitters with only 2 star potential.

Pitchers are more problematic. My only advice on that is -- check the Northern League the day after
the draft. There will probably be pitchers there
who are worth signing, people who you weren't sure
whether to rate or not.
