so just how important is the fastball rating. My top prospect right now has 12 stars, but a 263 fastball rating. What is the general consenus on how prospects with poor fastball ratings develop. I know Pedro Martinez has a 357 fastball and is one of the best career pitching leaders. I usualy regard control and breaking as the two most important factors, as I have had guys with change ratings in the 200s succeed. But has anyone ever had a player with an under 300 fastball succeed? Thanks for any feedback.

I had a guy named Myette succeed, he has 12 stars but a 220 fastball rating. His other 3 ratings are over 400 and increasing so a pitcher can be reasonably successful with a low fastball rating.

You can get away with any one area being deficient if they are strong in other areas, so you should be high on your prospect. I usually regard control as the most important stat, but o each his/her own.

I think we all know Sean De Paula.. 11 stars. 4 in control.. all 3 categories over 400 with breaking and control near 500. only 200 fastball. He has been very succesful from what I have seen.

personally, I am not a DePaula fan. I had him in a league go 5-4 3.89 another 4-8 4.92. Neither good enough to put up with him.

I had Todd Stotlemeyer (sp) at 250 FB with 10 points over or under 400 in the other three categories.

He has a lifetime era of 4.5 and it hasnt improved. although no one rating is terrific

I think as long as a pitcher has 3-4 pitches that are good he will be good.....and it doesn't matter which 3-4 are good

Personally, I evaluate pitchers by taking the average of fastball, breaking, change and control, with 400 being an average starter.

I like the heater. Personally I don't draft a pitcher unless he has 4 star control and a 400+ fastball. I've got Bautista who is 400 plus in all other cats but 270 fastball, he isn't great, 7-3, 4.50, my bats bail him out alot.

I cannot stress the importance of the middle relief spot enough. Brandon Reed is better than two of my starters, but I use him exclusively in middle relief. He pitches 2-3 games per series and gives my bats a chance to win. This led to the title in J2 in its inaugural seasion, and I'm up 3-1 in the ALCS this year. Nobody besides Bautista steps on the mound with a sub 400 fastball, and definately noone with sub-400 control.

hey EA, my experience shows me that Control is important for SP's but the other categories(ESPECIALLY fastball) are especially important for RP's, with control mattering little. Everyone has their own opinions, however. I'm sure everyone is aware how inconsistent pitching is. In fact, the new sim that the Commish is coming out with includes a tweaking of pitchers. We may want to wait and see what the new sim is like before we jump the gun on certain types of pitchers...

Chris, you might be right. The league leader in saves in my league had 450+ everything except a 200 in control. His ERA was about 2.

Yeah, I've got Mickey Mantei as my closer and he is the man with only around 350 control in J2, but in B3 my closer cost me game 2 of the ALCS and he has similar ratings. Man, I was up 7-5, he comes in, triple, double, walk-off homerun. I'm shipping him after this year to Siberia. (Or the waiver wire).

I don't think pitching is that dissimilar to real life. Who besides a handful of starters are good on a regular basis? And even they have their off nights. From what I've seen in my two leaugues, not too much is different.

My personal strategy is if the control is much below 400 *all* his pitches must be +400. Noone goes for me with a sub 400 fastball unless his control is +400. Below 350 with any pitch is a minor league pitch but I've had nice relievers with lower control.

I think a better way to judge pitchers is based more on their statistics. Check them out and then look at the ratings. I think that might be the key as maybe more of a "heart" factor is involved or something?
