Is there anyway you could construct a table similar to this one that combined GAP/AVE in one column, SPD/AVE in another, and just AVE like up above? This way we could isolate which factors more into improved hitting. Eat Acid--I don't think adding up and comparing AVG+GAP vs. AVG+SPEED would do the trick. To get a good answer to your question, you need to control one of the variables. For instance you could do GAP vs. SPEED for all batters with the same AVG ranking, and compare their BA, SLG %, and OBP. However, to do this you would need a very large sample group to get any kind of decent results, seeing as how there are so few people with AVG rankings exactly the same in each league.
