This might sound like a no-brainer but better safe than sorry. I just acquired SP Jim Johnson 22 years old. Fastball 450, change 350, break 467, control 415. I don't want to rush him, but do you think he's ready for the bigs?

check to see if he's still improving. If he is, then leave him alone, unless you really need him.

I thought that a player improves faster in the bigs than in AAA if he has over 350, which he does.

So hold out the first week and see if he improves? i don't desperately need him but he would definitely help my staff.

Place him in the long relief slot to see how he does, if you seem lots of improvement then you can leave him there to improve more, or you can put him in as a starter, why not do that then if he is sp quality try to deal the guy whos spot he is taking...

He will not be overmatched in the pros, if that is your question. However, there are several other factors to consider. First is his rate of improvement. My hunch is he will improve faster at this point in the majors, but i could be wrong. It isn't a bad idea to check how much he is improving currently before doing anything. A second consideration is his salary. You say he would help your staff. I guess my question is how much. If the answer is not significantly, than you don't really want to eat up one of his precious pre-arbitration salary years just to have him in the bigs (assuming he is still improving in the minors). You know the answers to these questions better than i do, and in the end it will be a judgement call.

Still, make sure that when you do call him up, you start him regularly so that he can improve as much as possible.

Hope this helps.

well I'm in Z, and I just got turned down on an offer for my best hitting prospect for him... you would have never gotten him that cheap in our league, but nice pick-up nonetheless...

Well since calling him up to the majors Johnson has gone 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA.
