The book could have been closed had we waited a couple more weeks to trade back too ;)
Rangel is now starting for me, but we was my middle relief the first 3 weeks. He went 6-0 as a middle reliever. I not only agree that the bullpen is important but would rather have a solid bullpen and a couple shaky starters versus 4 solid starters and a crappy bullpen.
Of course, that may be my current situation. Two shaky starters and a half decent bullpen. My pen might get rocked the next couple weeks while I move pitchers around and see who pitches best where.
Nice prospect list Timing. I could tell you were in the rebuilding stage with the 6 minor league hitters on your major league team. Have they been increasing in stats?
On to the draft.
I rated 80 players just so I could get at least 5. 70 players really and that was stretching it, but everyone's first two picks should pan out. Usually an abundance of RP but not this year. I had none rated higher than about 65th.
I tossed another 20-30 maybe maybe maybe prospects into grouping 5. That's better than having comp pick for me and keeps them off the Mets. ;)

Timing - Combs has basically came in when my team was getting blown out. If your middle relievers are getting a ton of innings, that means your starters must not be up to par. Bo and Bluma, the #1 pitcher in the game and a very good starter, almost always go 8 and 7 respectively. My 2 closers, Rodriguez and Ramano, are very good. Rodriguez is second in career saves and Ramano is 5th. They USUALLY come in and close out the game. Rodriguez always seems to get off to slow starts but then he always seems to come around in the end. It's my 3 and 4 starters that have problems now. I had to trade Callier because he wouldn't resign. Sometimes the bullpen is good, sometimes it's bad. Look at Whitey this year. I think the bullpen is the most unreliable and random postion in the game.

I think you can get by with out a great bull pen. I see both sides of your story. If you have a good starter with high stamina, then all you need is a good closer, but if your starters don't have high stamina, or you are going to get into a slug fest, you would want to have a good bull pen. that is obvious. What I think brock is saying that when you have good starting pitching, your bull pen will only have to pitch one or two innings at the max, and you don't need to waste a lot of money on lots of bull pen pitchers for 1 or 2 innings a game.
I do have a few high priced bullpen pitchers, my closer goldsmith, whitey was the first to score on him this season, and clontz a damn good all purpose bull pen pitcher form me. But as we all know, I don't have any starting pitching, so I need a bull pen to help stop the bleeding.

The minor leaguers on my major league team are just filler! lol In fact my AAA team is probably better than my major league team. I think I'll be bringing them all up next season and we'll see what happens.
On the draft, I have 2 words. Kenny Lofton

Question for anyone who can answer this. What type of ratings does it take to be a successful pitcher with the new simulator? Obviously my pitchers Martinez, Seaman, Gonzalez and Austin are mising something, but I can't figure it out. If a pitcher has below 400 in faatball does that mean he is gonna suck?? Pedro has about 500 in breaking and change and 440 in control, but only 350 fastball. Should he not have success?? Is anyone else experiencing this where supposed quality starters are routinely getting shelled?

It's like they tweek the SIM every night. We have been playing this for 5 seasons now. Have we every really had any pitcher consistency?
Try moving them around in the order. It might sound crazy but some pitchers pitch better in a certain spot.

I don't know what it takes for good pitching. I guess that is something that we will have to feel out for a few more seasons. Kind of like how we had to feel out the first four seasons when we started. It is almost like we have started over.

Alright, somebody's playing a cruel joke on me. I get the point, you can stop it now... ;)
J - You must have gotten a chuckle out of the way some of those games ended. My team would come back to tie or lead just to have my "star" relievers blow the game in a big way. I'm actually finding this funny, is that a sign of insanity??
P.S. anybody want to trade for a stud closer with a 10.50 ERA who blows every other save opportunity he gets? No? Why not?
The white flag has been raised....

That's a hell of a trade you made Whitey. The Indians owner must be an idiot to give you his #1 starter for 2 nobodies. I wish I could find an dumb enough owner to make a trade like that.

Brock - 2 nobodies?? I have a feeling that White may turn out to be a good ML outfielder and Maeda a good closer. You do realize that the 2 players I gave him are only ~20 years old and not yet ready for the Majors right? Don't worry, Gardner will suck for my team anyway

Whitey - I guess I looked at the wrong ratings on White. For some reason I thought he was only 6 stars which would be terrible considering his mid 200 ratings. I was actually looking at his pitching stars instead of his hitting stars, 11. He's still probably not going to be anything special. He's 24 already. Maeda will be no better than average. I'm impressed with your GM skills. You still ripped the guy off though. Good job.

Since it sounds like there was a compliment in there somewhere, I guess I should say thanks! ;) I honestly don't think I "ripped off" this guy though. There is still a lot of room for improvement for White if you look at his defensive rating (has anyone figured out the correlation between maximum growth achieved and the fielding rating?). I also don't know what would make you say that Maeda won't turn out to be anything. Although, if he turns out to be as good as Caraciolli I am glad I got rid of him..
By the way, Brock, did you become a born-again Christian or something? I don't really sense the hostility in your posts anymore..

I'm as far away from a born-again Christian as they come. I know the truth.
Let's just say that you got a damn good young starter for a good prospect and an average prospect. Maybe I'm just jealous that I wasn't able to pull off a trade like that, yet. I'm sure the hostility will eventually come back. If not, this league will be real boring in the future.

Hey, did they change the sim again last night??? I'm just asking because I swept the Dodgers and outscored them 41-10 with like 10 HRs. Normally, I wouldn't be so shocked by this but the way my team has been playing this season it's a bit surprising...I went from like 9th in the league to 2nd in runs scored in one night...

It looks like the Red Sox, Mariners and Braves didn't rate the prospects (I could be wrong though). At least I am sure that the Red Sox didn't rank them unless they wanted to draft Scott Erickson with the #3 pick (doh!)

FB BB CH CO --------------------- #1 492 473 299 496 #2 488 285 432 267 #3 460 320 361 405
Now, which one of these 3 guys is 0-3 with a 7.80 ERA? Maybe #2, possibly #3?? Nope, the first guy is my closer Caraciolli who has outrageous ratings and has pitched like a dog. Just to finish up my point, here are the stats for closer #2 and #3 respectively..
2-1 3.60 ERA, 12 saves 1-1 1.69 ERA, 12 saves
I guess sometimes less is more

I noticed that move also. Why someone would trade their best pitcher to the team right behind them in the standings amazes me. Granted, he wouldn't re-sign with him, but still. Also, it was kinda weird the way they did the trade. Enders went from the Padres to the Giants and back to the Padres. Geis went from the Padres to the Giants and Sheill went to the Padres..

I made 2 offers to him. Each offer included Belcher and Burnham. The only difference was that one included Enders and the other included Geis. He wanted the one with Geis but accidentally accepted the one with Enders. He then wrote me and told me the error that was made so I corrected it and traded him Geis for Enders.

I have never went into the Play-offs with more confidence. Even though I won the series last year, this is my best team yet. I went out and spent some of that cash and improved my hitting immensely. I am hoping half my team doesn't retire on me.
Hey Whitey. Wouldn't it be cool if we met up in game seven of the World Series. Austin pitches 8 shut-out innings only to have the bullpen come in and lose to my ace in the pen "Negrette" hehehe =)
Any team can win in a 7 game series. Good luck to the other teams in the play-offs, except the Royals!
