0 Subject: Help and Tips for a Rookie...

Any info you can give me will be much appreciated. My farm system is in shambles as I take over this team. Some team has a bid in for a FA SS for $105mil! Is that natural?? Rob Nen is making $12mil on my team. Is that right? Where can I expect to find good talent. Are owners likely to deal talent for older players? I don't want to start offending managers in my league by offering them deals they would never do.

Thanks in advance.

Alos, what does it mean when a player is listed on team DEBT?

swami - are you in P2??

Managers that want to contend for the championship will definitely trade prospects for older veterans. Just like in real baseball though, some managers are more willing to deal than others.

Nen is making 12m a year because somebody probably bid that high in free agency..

I'm in League L. I guess the idiot previous owner signed Nen to that deal.

more questions...

What are good #'s in the major categories? RBI's, HR's, etc.....
How much $$ can a bad team expect to make over a season?
Is 381 good stamina for a SP that's only 23, but must start for my squad this year?!?!

Swami,

There is a new sim now, so we are all starting to feel it out. the old one was all about your hitters avg numbers. now, avg is down and homers are up. bad pitchers are walking a lot of people now too. i still think avg is most important for hitters followed by homer then gap. don't usually worry about gap to often.

to get an idea about stats, check out your league's stats and you can get an idea from there. look at career as well as season stats

Career stats are almost worthless, due to the New Sim, I would suggest learning more about ratings. I should post a preliminary analysis on ratings relation to performance next weekend, but here is some of the stuff I've noticed so far:

A player's expected batting average is roughly his AVG rating minus 180. Obviously, this doesn't take into effect the opposing pitchers, but it's a rule of thumb. Depending on the pitching in the league, the league leader should hit .350-.360

The better home run hitters will hit anywhere from 15-17 homers per season on average. 20 home run hitters will not be uncommon, maybe 1-2 of them per season...it depends on pitching as usual.

GAP has a lesser effect, since you'd obviously rather have 15-17 homers than 15-17 doubles and triples. The GAP rating does have a significant efffect, however, as 15-17 doubles and triples are very useful. Again, 20 doubles + triples will occur infrequently

RBI obviously is tied too heavily into the rest of the team's production to give you a meaningful number.

As for pitchers, you can just add up the 4 ratings(FB, CHNG, BRK, CON) as a rule of thumb. But I can tell you now, that this is not the most accurate way to do it. Control heavily influences walks allowed, so it is definitly not weighted the same as the other 3. Is it more or less important? Well, I've got my own theories about that, but I'm not going to say anything until I can do some in-depth analysis on the matter.

381 stamina is fine. He won't lead the league in innings pitched, but he'll hang around long enough(7-8 innings if he's pitching well).

A good pitcher(Rangel, Osborne, Colon, Bluma, Norton, Martinez, Erickson, etc.) should end the season with a 3.00-3.50 ERA roughly, depending on the hitting. The league leader should probably be under 3, and maybe all the way down into the low 2's for a stud pitcher(Bohanon, Thompson, Clark) having a better than average season.

Thanks for the info guys. I found the league leaders, only not to find any of my guys up there, minus my RP who had 16 saves. I was impressed.

Are all the players in each league the same and are all the season simulated at the same time? If that is the case, do players progress the same in each league, or would that be more determined by how well you manage where they play (AAA, AA, etc)?

supposedly:

AAA - 300-400 in any categroy (except Speed & Fastball*)
AA - 200-300
A - <200

*-Speed for batters & Fastball for pitchers never change.

Another rule of thumb - dont do anything drastic to your team until you've got an idea as to whats going on - ie - dont sign Randy Johnson to a huge contract because he's named Randy Johnson (dont ask)

One more question. When can I sign players in the Northern League to my system?

The most important signing takes place after the 2nd week. Make sure to make you bids before then.

everyone who goes undrafted...or if they get drafted but aren't signed...go into the northern league.

Week 2 is a good time to get GOOD Northern Leaguers.

I would say that is well above average, although some (not me) say they have over $100 mil.

everyone starts with $40mil. So $80mil is very good.

Well I spent a little bit of $$$ and signed a starter for $671,000. I needed one and it's only a one year deal. Season starts tomorrow, wish me luck!!
