0 Subject: L2 Season 5

New season starts tonight and we'll see how the offseason moves pan out. Several teams opened up their checkbooks and some big FA contracts were handed out. I stayed out of the FA market this year, and only made 1 offseason move. I was fortunate not to lose any of my stars to retirement, so I'm looking to make a 3rd straight trip to the WS. In order to do that I have to get past division rival Mariners and the AL East powerhouse Yanks. What a 1st week matchup pitting my Royals and those Damn Yankees. Should be a good measuring stick of how our teams stack up.

The Cubs coming off their first WS title look to retun to the big show as well, but will have several teams to contend with. Chris has sold the Astros in order to concentrate on his other teams, and Blue Hen is the new owner (although it appears to me that his name is green on the organization page). So a hearty welcome to the greenish-blue hen!

Good luck to all (but not too much of course)!

The new sim has had some interesting effects. Time for some changes in overall strategy from here on out.

I can't put me finger on any effect yet. Control is said to be important according to the GS message board but I don't agree yet.
I do know that I have an extremely fast team and I've been caught about 12 times with 6 SBs.

Us Cubbies Walked 6 times in 3 innings against mahaffey, whose control is 355(and 12 times in that game!!), but none against reed (455 control). Our starters have an average control rating of 471.25 and walked only 13 batters in 53 innings. Maybe that is an indication of control taking into affect?? I know that the sample size is too small for me to make a definitive conclusion, but I'm certainly not complaining with how the results turned out so far:D.

In case you guys are wondering what offer I made to the Giants to ruffle his feathers enough to blast me in a mail to the league, it was:
Carlos Adolfo, Jorge Toca, Josh Paul, and Jason Boyd for $8 million. Paul and Boyd are questionable major leaguers, but Carlos Adolfo is a valuable player who I project to be 440+ in AVG. Toca is also a high contact player who will find a major league job somewhere in another season. Given the trade the Dodgers and Giants just made, and the amount of money thrown around in the offseason for minor leaguers, I didn't think this was unfair of an offer.

We also enjoy the "teamwork" aspect. Grand Slam is a lot more fun when there is someone else you can discuss strategy and success with. Also, having two managers makes some tedious tasks such as league-wide scouting and free agent bidding easier.

I really recommend it if you have a sibling, schoolmate, or office co-worker who also plays the game.

BTW, I hereby slap Damn Yankees on the wrist for exploiting the waiver wire salary loophole. ;)

Synocco, that is correct. I talk smack and I self promote with the best of them. Actually, better than the best of them. In O2, I've had a perennial winner, but here in L2, Chris did a good job setting me up with a great team, so I hope that I can follow through and at least win the division. Or else all my smack talk will be for nothing.

Nevertheless, it's good to be here, and hopefully you guys will be reaping the benefits of having a blue (green? Chris's fault) hen in your league.

Have we ever had a no-hitter in the league? If not, we do now! Gabe Gonzalez of the Orioles no-hit the Mariners last night, with Brady Raggio finishing up in the ninth. Raggio then went on to blow a game later in the series by giving up 4 in the ninth, but I guess I'll forgive him.

Mr Blonde: I believe your no hitter is the first, at least it's the only one that I've seen in this league. Gabe Gonzalez no less... the former Cubs farmland, oh how I miss ye...

I'm not getting any mileage out of my closer Ray King, he's pitched exactly 4 innings all year. Even my setup man has more innings.

I was definitely surprised by the sweep. The way Clark had been pitching I thought I was going to have to demote him in the rotation, but he found his stuff. If he is to come close to his 1.07 ERA of last season, then he will be unhitable the rest of he way. My rookie of the year candidate Scott has been great so far, and the bullpen has performed better than expected. If I can only get several of my hitters to wake up, I should be in good shape.

Put me in, Coach: Hey, you gotta hate your division rivals. You had Astros to hate, now we get to hate the Braves. No need to be snide. :)

Back to the "touchy" subject at hand, it seems to me that there's really no such thing as "Manager of the Year" in GSB. In real life, such a person is someone who gets the most out of his players. In GSB, you just put your best team forward and hopes the sim goes your way. If anything, "General Manager of the Year" would be more appropriate, and given to the person who makes the best trades or manages their finances the best. However, I don't think that this is possible in a league full of arrogant, egotistical guys like L2. ;)

Yeah, but no team overachieves year after year. Braves will likely be a .500 ball club next year, especially if Roger Clemens retires. Other teams, like your Dodgers, will be in the hunt year after year.

Cool, I finally have a no-hitter. Daal and Verdugo combined to no-hit the hapless Indians. My team is finally starting to come around, but I don't hold out much hope to get back to the WS. I was not able to pull off any deadline deals to improve my team and I don't think I match up well against the leaders. We'll see.

Urbina is the best closer might be in top 5 but probably won't win. I also have Norton that came out of relief and wound up starting and is 10-2 with under a 3 era.

I have no offensive MVP canidates. I should have 2 in Ramirez and Williams. Hopefully next year. Are they the best 3-4 hitters in the league? On paper?

Your Urbina is a mystery to me. His WHIP of 1.4 would suggest a ERA of around 4.00, with a number of blown saves. Yet, he's been able to scrape by consistently and put up awesome numbers. From what I hear, Norton puts up front-of-the-rotation numbers in most leagues... he's definitely a keeper.

His 2 other games was in middle relief before I moved him to closer.

Urbina was my main closer last season and he was great before the new sim was implemented. Afterwards, his ERA went straight up and he blew several saves. I didn't re-sign him because of that and now he's been great for the Dodgers. Just don't expect him to be that good next season.

The AL Cy-Young will come down to Thompson, Rubio and Scott. The final start for each of them will probably decide it. I would give Thompson a slight edge because of his K/BB ratio and he's pitch several more innings.

So, how is this voting thing going to work now that the season is over? Shall we invite all the managers to come here and vote? I think it would be more interesting/fair if everyone votes, and it should make this board more lively than it already is

Some of you may have been in leagues that have given awards out, but here are some suggestions. I think we should have a MVP, Cy Young, ROY, and Relief award. We could have a best manager or GM award also as I think someone else may have mentioned. Anyway, each team should be responsible for nominating their players for each award. If a team doesn't respond then someone else will have to choose any players from their teams.

As far as voting, I don't think a team should be allowed to vote for their own players. From the choices available, each team should vote for the top 3 for each award. Players with a 1st place vote should get 3 points, 2nd gets 2 points and 3rd 1 point. Or we could stagger it something like 5-3-1 to give the top two a more weighted vote. For the relief award, we need a formula similar to the Rolaids award and include not only saves, but Wins, Losses and ERA. We don't have stats for blown saves, but the 4 we have should be pretty good. My closer was tied for saves but had an ERA over 7 so I think that should account for negative points somehow.

Any other comment/suggestions. We could split up the awards and let 1 manager handle 1 award category.

The players that retired have already had their stats removed. I did, however, copy down the stats for all players that I thought were ballot worthy for MVP and Cy Young before the sim last night. I quickly scanned both leagues for Rookie of the Year candidates and only found two that stood out, being Cancel (Cubs) in the NL and Scott (Royals) AL. Let me know if there are any others that should be included. We can start a separate thread for awards and come up with a list of players to be voted on in each category. I can supply the stats for the retired players.
