It is now our 10th season in L2, and there has been a lot of history. We recently lost another owner, which is unfortunate, but we will press on. I'd be interested to hear everyones picks and projections for the season ahead.I'll post mine soon.

I will once again get more wins than my payroll (37,mil). Well, the real prediction (Yawn) Cubs win!

The Cubs payroll has risen steadily over the past few seasons from about $40 million in Season 5 to double that this season. Of course, Tino Martinez's 24 million plays no small part in raising the payroll. ;) Our team has a few question marks this season. The hitting has seen the departure of Jim Duffy, the last remaining link to the original Cubs roster of Season 1. Also gone are Wil Polidor, a perennial star, and Tim Laker, an important role player. Can the rookies step up? Perhaps the biggest loss is Richard Negrette who has anchored the bullpen for the past 4 seasons. But the acquisitions of Sido and Baker should soften that blow. I predict 45 wins for the Cubs.

Looks like the Cubs and Royals lead the way again, with the Cubs likely to retain their WS title. The Astros are preparing for the merger and will be happy to finish above .500.

I hope that the merger happens soon. It's not that I can't wait to start paying for this game, but the present state of the game leaves a lot to be desired. Playing in a league with 8 teams really diminishes the competitive nature of the game. Beating a team with no owner just isn't as sweet. Everyone is basically in a holding pattern, planning for merger. I hope the Commisioner starts things into motion soon.

Can you believe the Mets get 2nd pick in this year's draft?

LOL! For a team that's aiming for .500, the Astros sure showed the Dodgers a thing or two.

Week 3: David vs. Goliath, round 2.

I had a payroll of around 35 million when I won my only WS title in season 3. It slowly rose to 45 million by year 5 and then following my 2nd year in a row of not making the WS, I increased it to over 70 million where it has been the last two seasons. With the loss of Bohanon, my payroll is down to 61 million this season, but so far the product on the field is not the same this year. I expect I can win the division for the 8th consecutive year without making any changes, but I'm working on some deals to improve.

As far as the merger, without knowing when it will occur, it is hard to plan and manage especially with only 8 active teams. There are several players on non active teams that I could swing a deal for right now. We are all coasting along for now, but it would be nice to have a general timeframe.

It looks like the NL bidding settled down a little from last season, but there were still a few large signing bonuses given out. I wanted Pavano, but I was outbid by several million. At least I got Stottlemeyer who was second on my list. The Yanks apparently won the flip of the coin for Carpenter since I also bid 6 million on him. Most of the teams remaining nabbed a few guys, so it was a little more spread out this season.

That is what my team is doing. I played 2 of the weakest teams (Braves + Cards) and a good Astro team and I am a horrid 6-6 while the 'Stros played my Dodgers, Mets and Cubs and are 6-6. But a firesale is out of the question but a few minor deals are a possibility.

16 games in a there hasn't been a CLONTZ sighting! Maybe the Best closer for the last 4 seasons hasn't even left the bullpen yet. Rumors say that he is loading up on cheeseburgers and shakes. I have to get him in a game and burning some calories soon. 7 Mil/year to relax. Boy, wish I was a left-hander.

Maybe he's working on his "high strike" now that the umps are supposed to call it. ;) Good series, Coach. You blasted Downs, but I was able to come out with a split anyway. I have an unbelievably tough schedule this year catching the two best NL teams as well as the top dogs twice in the AL. At least I can look ahead to my 8 games with the Indians.

I think Bob File should be handed his walking papers! ;) Something is wrong when one pitcher has 6 losses (out of 8!) after only 5 weeks.

I think this emphasizes the fact that Middle Relief is the most important relief position for teams with good to excellent starting rotations. (Long relief being as important as middle relief for those teams without good starters.) A lot of people waste their best reliever in the closer's role. Acth-Clontz-choo... ;)

I don't think your team sucks. Just imagine if you had a solid middle reliever... say, someone who can pitch 60 innings per season with an ERA around 3.50. That pitcher might be 6-1 instead of File's 1-6. You'd be in first place.

Of course, a lot of File's miserables numbers have been due to bad luck since File has decent ratings. Not much you can do about that. :)

The LA Times the lead stroy is "This Dodgers SUCK!!!" Yes, we are rebuilding again, 2nd time in 3 years! After a 12-12 start I am throwing in the towel. I have been lacking something in my lineup but I cant figure out what it can be. My offense has been eratic each season and my pitching is always in the top 3. Hopefully rebuilding for the merger on the pitching side can change some things.

It seems that the switch to a pay-site will happen relatively soon. I will be taking my C3 Mets into the merge. They are very similar to my L2 team, just with more of a farm.

I never used the GRT or anything else for that matter. My team was built in a totally fair manner in a league that was more competative then L2. Unfortunately, it has been stricken to the same fate as L2 since the announcement. (Although we do have all 16 owners at the moment, most of the time we have about 12 though)

Well that is a little background on C3. My team has a lot more of a farm-but is a lot older. I have about 6 elgible for retirement players. I look foward to competing against all of you. It kind of looks like the Cubs team, but it is a lot older and won't look like that after the season.

Good luck.

"With regards to the accusations spread by an unknown source, (believed to be someone from the Chicago area) we deny all of the rumours, the ladies found in Corey Lee's hotel room were his sisters who just happen to be naturists as well!, the white powder found on the bed side table was simple crushed up paracetamal as Mr Lee does not like swallowing any type of tablet!.

The only problem with rebuilding in this way is that typically only a third of your picks turn out to be good players. So unless lady luck favours you more than the rest of us (which doesn't seem to be the case, judging from your GSB message board post), you'll probably only get 1 stud out of this sweep of the first round.

Personally, I'm much more comfortable trading for prospects that are only 2-3 years away from full maturity. You know what you're going to get with some degree of certainty, and I'm not talking about the GRT either.

The Test League application won't affect the L2 Cubs in any way. I just want to get a sneak peak at the mechanics of the new game... 5 man rotations, reliever injuries, etc. That way, I'll have an advantage once the merged league starts. ;)

I'm pretty sure we will still participate in the merger. With the current trend that is going on in the L2 league ( nobody cared for winning now, every one is building for the "future"), its really not very exciting. So we want to get some refreshment and challenge as quick as we can:)

Yeah, I didn't play SW football this year, and I started out in the Guranimals basketball division with a team, but I ended up ignoring it to the point that I moved it to an auto league where it sits. I have two other SW basketball teams that are doing well, one was #83 yesterday and the other somewhere in the 300's. The one at #83 is in Guru's league and I am 10th in the division. Tough competition to say the least!

Baseball is the only game I know and play. I don't even know half the rules in football or half the players in basketball. :) I played Smallworld and Echelon last year, but with GSB taking up so much time, I think I'll ignore Echelon this year. I have been successful in Smallworld Baseball before (a 54th finish and a 56th), but I really sucked last year. Maybe this year I won't decide to hang on to Kip Wells for the first month!

Basketball is my favorite sport, so i definitely get into it more. The baseball season is so long it seems to drag out, and unless I am doing really well, I tend to lose interest late in the year. My best finish in SW baseball was last year somewhere in the 400 wwr range. I did make the top 50 in SW playoff baseball, but that was only because I tried the 8 team method and dumped the teams that didn't advance. You still had to manage the teams in the final series, but it does take the fun out when you do this. All I got was another SW T-shirt so it wasn't worth the trouble. ;)

So looking at the draft results, the Dodgers get Croghan, Ramirez, and Lopez as compensation from previous trades. Only time will tell if any of these "players to be named later" will turn into MLers. I ended up with three 1B in the draft, so I am looking to deal at least one of them for a prospect at another position. I got several 2B as well, but a couple of them are projects. It would be great if Vick Brown hit 460 in avg, but I won't hold my breath. I did have a guy with a 3 star average get up to 474 in my other league, so it is possible.

Another SW story... I was in the SW Baseball midseason league 2 seasons ago. I went totally with players under 2mil to start the mid-season and built up all my cash and before long I went from 10,000 something to make a run with a month left in side 1,000. I then devoted more time buying and selling, selling and buying and when all was said and done I wound up 3rd.

The HUGE prize I recieved was a Triple Play '99 baseball game which I already had considering it came out in the spring. So, I figured I would return it when I recieved it. It took 3 months after the season ended and the celophane wrapper was already removed! Actually I had 2 teams that season and the other team ended up like 47th or so. But it SW fashion they only sent me one worthless game.

I know the game was free, but I took that as a FREE slap in the face! That was the last season I played SW. By the way, it is located in Mahattan about 20 minutes from me!

Besides my wife banned me from playing SW because it took all my FREE time. Now, I secretly play GSB. Shhhhhhhh!

I think Jovino Carvajal in our league only had 3 stars in AVG and he ended up at 485. I've heard of several 3-star players in other leagues reaching 490+ in that category, so it is definitely possible for "projects" to work out... though I'd imagine that it's quite rare.

Jeff Williams's changeup got to 402 on 2 stars. Now we're hoarding a lot of 7-8 star pitchers with good fastballs hoping to catch lightnining in a bottle. :)

skinneej: We are weak at 1B in our minors, so maybe we can work something out. Our strength seems to be 2B also, so I'm not sure we'll have a match.

Guillen-2b ****-****-**-289,
Ramirez-of ****-****-*-414?
I had him right after these guys and Bohannon and Benes. 6th in the draft.

I drafted Lamb because I've been trying to get a 3B prospect for years. I have 3 young 2B prospects, plenty of OF's and SP's as well. So it was more of a need thing than anything else.

That said, with only 7 teams drafting, I'm pretty disappointed in what I wound up with. My fault, I guess.

While I have faired well against the CUBS 4-4 this season and I've done a pretty good job in past regular season, I have been crushed in the post-seasons. Well, season 10 has concluded it's regular season, and it's time for the playoffs again. The contenders look very familiar, although a one game playoff will be necessary to decide the NL West. The Cubs, while sporting a league best 49-15 record, were secretly dissapointed by not notching their 50th win. The management was heard to threaten to move the team to Canada if they don't win the WS ring again!

While we have not handed out post season awards in a few years, I thought I'd add a few thoughts on what appears to be our last season before the merger. I'm definitely ready for the merger as I'm sure the rest of you are. We've been biding time for the past two seasons, and I'm itching to go. I'm already paid up!

I'll cover the AL, and let someone else do the NL. Starting with MVP, I did a quick scan and really only two players struck me as having across the board MVP numbers: Randy Brown of the O's and Jason Clarke of the Royals. Brown, a former AL MVP, put up solid numbers again playing in all 64 games, hitting .330 with 58 runs, 20 doubles, 17 SB and amassed a .842 OPS. Clarke missed 8 games due to injury, but was able to bat a league high .386, scored 43 runs, 43 RBI, 14 SB and had an OPS of .937. I'd cast my vote for Clarke, of course.

AL CY Young is very interesting and is a close call between Scott Downs and Phillip Norton. If you look a W-L records only then Norton beats out Downs 11-1 to 10-4. Downs edges Norton in ERA slightly 2.40 to 2.51. But let's look a little deeper. Downs allowed only 69 hits in 105 IP while striking out 98 batters. His WHIP was an Pedro-like .96. His accomplishments this season include tossing a 1-hitter (second of his career) against the Rangers, 2-hitting the Whitesox on two occasions, 2-hitting the Mariners, 3-hitting the mighty Cubs, and recording 15 K's against the *cough* Indians. Take away two poor outings and two close losses, and he wins hands down. I rest my case.

It is rumoured that the Cubs managed have already decided to move to Canada. Through out the past few years, the payroll has steadily increased to the point where the city of Chicago just can't afford it anymore. Meanwhile Canada seem like a brand new market, and the organization may just be able to survive with the support of entire Canadian population.

After the third straight season with sub 2.9 era and winning 10+ games in each, Mike Bell left many people wondering who is the true ace of the staff. This season, he led the leagues in wins and IP, second in ERA and Strikeouts, made this years decision for cy young winner in very little doubt.

Brandon Knight, a former White Sox prospect also emerged as perhaps one of the best closer in the game. Finishing 16 for 16 with 1.13 ERA, "WHIP"ping the hitters to a mere 0.688 base runners per inning. Of course, the NL save king Brad Clontz was not be to topped, in his usual self, he went 15-15 with a microscopic 0.60 earned run average. Who do you think is the best reliever in the NL? Clontz, Knight, or maybe Jeff Harris?:)

Met's Steve Hagins seems to be the favorit to win the MVP honour. Supported by a jugernaught offence, Hagins completed the season with 23 round trippers, 64 RBIs and slugged .601.

We definitely have seen a few suprises this season. First, it was the Owner-less Padres starting the season with a 17-7 record, that is, AFTER playing Cubs, Dodgers and Mets. Then it came the fire sell of the Dodgers. Whose team all of a sudden decided to win games after two key pitchers have departed. They came back from as far as 6 games behind to play the playoff game tonight vs the Astros. Lastly the Yankees, whom have suffered greatly from last offseason rebounded nicely, and despite a great effort by the O's, was able to defend his division yet again.

I kind of got hurt by the double sim tonight. I put all my better pitchers into the RP slots in game 1 because of the 1 game playoff with the astros. Then when the the playoffs vs. the cubs started I had no one to pitch games 2-4. Commish has been horrible running (neglecting) the (old) league. Well now, its a 3 game playoff. Wouldnt it be something, if a team in a rebuild wins it all? It wont happen but wouldn't it be something?

Time to turn back the clock. In Season 3 (my first full year in L2) I printed out my draft sheets and I thought it would be fun to look back. I only noted the first round picks for each team, but let's see "WHERE ARE THEY NOW".

#1. Russ Morman (Padres) A 12 star prospect turned out to be somewhat of a dissapointment. He is currently the starting 1B for the Padres ML squad, but has a career avg of .227 although he does have good power.

#2. Angel Pena (Whitesox) Not a real good first round pick. Is currently in AAA for the Sox, where he will likely stay until he is cut.

#3. Carlos Hernandez (Mets) Turned out to be a solid player, and is the starting SS for the Mets. He has a .280 career average and looks to have a good career.

#4. Stubby Clapp (Dodgers) Best average of the top 4 picks and had a pretty good season in his second full year as the Dodger's starting second bagger.

#5. Shane Halter (Red Sox) Not to be confused with the Cubbies minor league player of the same name, he is the starting SS for the Sox and batted .336 last season.

#6. Jeff Kent (Indians) Not a good first round selection with only 2 stars in average. Maybe a guy to take a waiver on in the last couple rounds and hope he really overachieves.

#7 and #8 Teams did not rank their drafts.

#9. Scott Pratt (Yankees) Is currently in the Cubs farm system at AAA. May get a shot at the big leagues one day, or may find a spot on a team with less depth.

#10. Rick Heiserman (Cubs) Now a Padre, he could be a decent 4th or 5th starter in the new league, but with no current management his big league dreams will fizzle away.

#11. Joe Vitiello (Royals) My first pick for this team did not turn out to be a good one. He had potential with 4-3-4 in stars, but failed to break the 400 mark in average. He was released, picked up by another team for a few weeks and then dumped again into obscurity.

#12. Jason Secoda (Rangers) Currently holds a spot in the Texas bullpen and is coming off a good year. He struggled his first couple of years, but may have settled down into a steady player.

#13. Mark Wohlers (Astros) Former manager Chris snagged a good pick in Wohlers and he looks to have a bright future. Currently in AAA, he has struggled in his big league appearances to this point, but looks to get another shot as his numbers are solid.

#14. Brian Moon (Orioles) A 3-3-4 player, he failed to make the bigs, and was cut as a result.

#15. Did not rank players

#16. Dave Willis (Cardinals) A 4-3-3 prospect he did not pan out. He is currently the starting 1B for the pathetic Braves, but would not be on any good ML roster.

Interestingly enough, my 2nd and 3rd round picks turned out to be pretty good and made up for Vitiello. Zosky was the 2nd round pick and is currently manning the hot corner for the perennial World Champion Cubs. Boy I wish I had him back. Tyner was the 3rd round pick, and he is a future star. He will make the ML squad next season and at 24 will have many seasons ahead of him.

Looks like most teams hung on to their 1st round picks that year, and most of them are still in the ML or on a AAA squad. I kept the draft list from Season 8 as well, so in a few seasons we can do another look back.

Old, but very talented. Look foward to the challenge of playing against everyone in the merger...how is the draft going to work? Theoretically, we would have to double the number of players in the pool, right? Gonna be a pain to rank....

I believe the Commish said that he will continue simming the old leagues up until the merger so we might get another draft in L2.

Good job, skinneej. I wish we had a draft recap for each season. I found it very interesting.

I am paid in full! BRING ON THE NEW SITE!!!

I have been hearing a lot about increased injuries from the test league. I think that is great...but...they are saying numbers like 61 players injured in only a few weeks. That number seems high to me...anyone else?

That doesn't seem too high. In MLB, at any one time during the season there will be a few players on the DL for each team. With 30 teams, even 100 players on the wouldn't be too unusual. Of course, they shouldn't all be out for a long time -- hopefully just one sim or so (which would be about 2 weeks of "real time").

I think this is a good development. It encourages people to have more depth on their roster. Most teams don't have full rosters at MLB just because the game doesn't make it necessary or even economical. More injuries will make good backup players more important. It'd be nice, however, to have utility players who can play several positions, however.

Put me in, Coach:

When you asked about Tino Martinez during the last free agency period, I explained exactly what the situation was. You didn't have a problem then. I said that we were going to honor his $24 million contract and then re-sign him for a more reasonable price. Well, we've paid the $24 million in full, and now we will re-sign him at $5 million per year. I emailed a couple of owners directly about this (those who asked, including you) and the situation was discussed on the message board. Does anyone else have some input?

Guys, I've sent the Dodgers a couple e-mails earlier stating my position, but I'll restate it here. This is not a loophole and is not the same as the sign and demote because you have to pay the player's salary for the whole year, not just the signing bonus and one week's worth of salary. When you guys signed him to the deal, I knew what you were doing and that his salary would revert to the rookie scale after one year. Since you basically paid 27.6 mil for the first year to retain his services, I have no problem if you pay him only 450k this year and then sign him to a long term deal. If you feel you should go ahead and sign him now, then that is fine also.

BTW, that was a good series and I thought it was over when you pulled out game 6. Who knew that Brad Guy would pitch the game of his life. It is ironic that this was the worst team I've had in years in my opinion, and I did not expect to make it past the Yanks, much less win the series. I'll take it though!

Yeah, it was a very exciting series. Cubs offence was serverely hindered without the services of Wally Joyner, but we managed to rally back from a 3-1 deficit all the way into game 7. However, we finally ran out of steam in game 7, that and Brad Guy's brilliant outing give Royals a well deserve win.
Surely, we will meet again in the new merger league:)
