Anybody that thinks they have a player that could be an MVP, Cy Young, or ROY candidate post them here. Also post any other players that you think could make the All-Star team. After we have a complete list, go to the league website and cast your votes. |

CY seems easy. Sullivan (NL) and Sparks (AL) stand way out. MVP is a different story. Lots of good players to choose from.

J, those links are very helpful. I don't know how easy this is to do, but for the hitters, it might also be good if you included all players with, say, 100+ RBI. In the AL, Giles is excluded despite 144 RBI because he's just a bit below .300. He's probably more deserving than many of those guys.

Sullivan is my MVP because without him, I would not be so well off. But I guess we cant vote pitchers for MVP...

MVP in the NL is interesting. Bobby Smith has the best percentage stats but missed 31 games. To me, that lowers him a notch. Then there's Roy May and Bob Abreu who have almost identical stats.

ok, i think my formula would be good to get like the top ten or so like J said to help base voting for awards. I am going to go back and add games played and team winning percentange to the mix and see what happens. it should not change much but we will see. later axp113

AXP - I think you formula is flawed. I think OBP should be used instead of BA or given more weight than BA. Hits should be excluded from the equation too because they are already included in OBP and BA. Runs, RBI and SLG should be at the top with OBP. 2B, 3B, and HR are all included in SLG so they don't need to be included. SB should be included but not valued as high as the other 4. That's really all you need from a statistical standpoint. For the MVP, the winning % is also important but needs to be used in perspective, how good would that team have been without that player. I'm sure most of you already know this but I just wanted to point it out.

Hey,
Ok here are my nominees for All-Star/MVP etc.
George Powell - OF .337 AVG 152 Games 206 Hits 14 HRs 88 RBIs .400 OBP
Gene Heredia - OF .330 AVG 162 Games 217 Hits 15 HRs 121 RBIs .401 OBP
Slow Joe Austin - C .325 AVG 162 Games 208 Hits 12 HRs 88 RBIs .402 OBP
Bryan Wolff - RP 2-2 2.70 ERA 49 Games 30 Saves 90 IP 68 K's
Tommy Corcoran - SP(Rookie) 17-7 3.55 ERA 30 Games 207 IP 140K's
Also, just wondering if we are going to do like the Major League and make sure that at least one player from every team is represented? I don't think it would be a good idea.

brock, i am open to suggestions, i just wanted to make a formula to help assist in voting for the awards. maybe in the long run the commish can implement a formula to do this but until then we could set something up.

I didn't mean to sound harsh AXP. The formula was a good idea but I just didn't want people to be misled. I probably a little bias toward OPS(OBP + SLG). I just think OPS, Runs and RBI are the top categories.

Brock - I think that is a good idea, we wanted people to suggest what they think should be weighted more and what should be weighted less. Good point from Sachin, but we dont really need to have one guy from every team do we, that would be a lot of allstars.
Also, I agree that winning percentage is a major part in the factor. Would i have won as many games without May's great run production, 2nd in both Rbi's and Runs? I dont think so. And no offense to APX, but Bobby Smith will have his year, and he is the best player in GSB, just not the MVP this year.

SanFran - I think you would have won about as many games as you did, with or without May. You're pitching is what made you the best team. You scored twice as many runs as you gave up. In my opinion, Smith and Abreu are more worthy of the award. I'll continue to look over everything though.

J I like your way of doing it, it limits things pretty well, only on problem, doing .300 Avg gets rid of some power hitters. for instance, I have gary Burham, he hit .281 but had 25 Hr's 114RBI's and 27SB's Plus with the SP ratings, McReynolds was my #2 guy, Russ Fortugno has better numbers than him, except wins, most likely cause reliever blew saves. Here are Russ;s numbers 13-8 3.59ERA 130K's other than those 2 things, i like it.

Brock - I can see your argument for Abreu, but not Smith. Zona didn't win, and the MVP is for a player that helped his team get to the level they are at. Therfore i cant vote for Smith Over the other two. I did score the most runs and rbis in the NL and May was a big part of that.

Brock, I also use OPS as the one stat to divide the cream of the crop from all the also rans. After OPS, RBIs and Runs scored are the next stats that I look hard at, and then HR and SB. Total hits is a good stat, but it varies based on games played. I want to see what players did with the ABs they had which OPS is the telling stat.
After scouting the AL, here are my nominees based on the previous criteria. Also, a team's final record is important as I favor player's from teams that finished at or near the top. After saying that, I found it surprising that I did not find any players that I would classify as top AL MVP contenders from some of the best teams - Oak, Minn and my KC Royals. I felt Cancel (Royals) did not have the total stats or OPS, Cintron (Oak) did not have the OPS, and Burnham (Min) did not have the batting average or OPS. Now to the list of contenders:
Boston had three worthy players, but only two had the OPS - Connor and Wright. Both have similar numbers across the board with Conner having the slightly higher batting average and Wright the slightly higher OPS.
Tampa's Whillock had an incredible season and a whopping OPS of .888.
Toronto's Bradford led the AL with a .365 average and an even better .899 OPS.
Chicago WS - Flaherty had a .362 average, an AL league best OPS of .902 but his other numbers were low and the WS finished 3rd in the AL Central.
Cleveland's Lofton had strong numbers and a good OPS but his team finished dead last in the AL Central.
Anaheim's Horne had the lowest OPS of any of the contenders, but he had solid numbers and deserves mention. The Angels contended all season in the West and just came up short but secured the WC slot and should give the Royals all they can handle.
My AL MVP vote will go to Bradford who barely edged out Whillock in my mind as Toronto won the AL East.

As far as ROY, my best candidate, Turner Ward, was on his way to having a great rookie season before he was lost for the final 9 weeks. I will submit Bret Boone in his place as my ROY candidate.

Ok. It is clear that the Rangers don't make the highlight films very often. As a matter of fact, I don't have any players that I would consider MVP or CY Young eligible. However, I do have some decent rookies. Here are the two I would like to submit for ROY consideration....
Sheldon Hunter - OF
Games - 162 Runs - 91 Hits - 188 Home Runs - 14 RBIs- 110 Stolen Bases 29 Average - .295 No errors - Gold Glove defense.....
Bob Duggan - 2B
Games - 162 Runs - 98 Hits - 214 Home Runs - 11 RBIs- 80 Stolen Bases 49 Average - .328
May not be the caliber of a moose humper team, but I have to be happy about something..... :)

Looks like two solid rookie performance Charles. I brought one rookie up, OF Cahill. I only played him in 80 games but he had over 309 AB's so he should qualify.
.333 average .418 OBP .524 SLG .942 OPS 61 Runs 63 RBI's 15 Homers 12 2 baggers and 13 steals

A couple of guys on my team that are deserving for All-Star honors:

I got too caught up in giving guys days off and hurt several of their stats for this year. Should have better representation next season.

Does anyone have 1B or 2B all-star candidates in the NL? How about 3B in the AL?
Steve Hagins is listed at C but played 1B in about 3/4 of my games, so I nominate him as an all-star at 1B since there are so few candidates.

I voted Bradford as MVP as well as all-star team. Giles made my all-star ballot as well. OF and pitching were tough to narrow down to 6 each. Many good pitchers aren't going to make the team.
A good majority of the names in this thread made my all-star ballot but I went and found a couple sleepers too. It will probably be like real life selections where the "name" players (ones on the leaderboard for average in the case of GSB) make it over some more worthy guys.
Who manages the all-star game? Is the managers from the losing teams in the League Championship games? I am pretty sure it is and they get to add some players to round out their team. How many players is it and who else thinks we should allow that manager to add several players after the ballots are tallied? They can be annitated as *Managers selection.
Probably 6 starting pitchers are going to be selected from the AL. Personally, I voted Clontz as one of my selections and if I was going to be managing the AL I would want a closer on my team. If he didn't get selected I sure as heck would want to add him.
That's not saying that I think I will make it past Toronto and then get creamed by KC either.
;)
