Ummm... does the NL really need six shortstops on the team? Does the AL need 4 catchers? What is the selection process now?

SW points. Which, I like the idea, but maybe we should put a cap on max # of players per position?

Interesting that 6 of the best SW-type players are SS. Of course, I'm not in favor of getting rid of some as it would undoubtedly eleminate my only AllStar. ;)

Seriously, there should be a cap of 2 or maybe 3 players per position. (6 or 9 for OF's)

How come we don't get more representation from other teams as All-Star nominations? Basically, at least one player from every team, and then you could assign the rest of the positions based on whatever formula that you use. If you have a stacked team, then you could just put your whole roster up there. Okay...cut and paste lesson. If you want to paste something, make sure you cut instead of copy, so you don't look like a repetitive @$$! :)

I think we should stick with a minimum of 2 per position, and have a maximum of 3. Other than that, the SW points idea seems to work OK.

Charles, I see your point, but some teams just don't have any players worthy of all-star status, especially teams that are tanking. So I'm not in favor of that idea but if others like it I won't complain.

If we want to try to get more teams represented, what about this idea. We could say that if a team is not represented but has a player that has almost the same number of points as another player from a well-represented team (say within 10 points or something), the player from the unrepresented team is chosen instead.

I like that idea better. I agree with you that teams that are tanking players probably don't deserve to send anyone to the All-Star game. I just get tired of seeing the same teams up there, year and year out...with 8 players on the All-Star roster. It is basically just a braggin' tool...HEY..look how stacked my team is, I have 8 all-stars and 2 reserves.

And by the way, axp113, I am not going off on the work that goes into this. I and everyone else appreciate the effort and enjoy these awards.

I don't think we should reward bad teams like MLB does. if some one's team has the 9 starting all stars, and the 5 best pitchers, then the all star team could be that whole team. if they are the best players then so be it. I also don't like the 2 play minimum thing. look at the NL All-Stars this year, jeff kent was the only 2b.

how about a minimum of 4 middle IF, 4 corner IF, 2 catchers, and 6 OF? then you could distribute the last few open spots to the best remaining players?

I guess that is why you will see the stacked teams continue to provide a higher level of participation and the so called lesser teams continue to rotate owners as people lose interest. I wasn't suggesting to totatly revamp the All-Star roster system. However, if you have guys on the the bubble...some players are more valuable on bad teams because they have less to work with around them. It doesn't mean that they are not All-Star caliber and if they were on San Fran they would probably end up with the CY YOUNG or MVP award. You can continue doing what you are doing, I just thought I would ask.

Charles, if you want to have an all star team of the teams who are under .500, go right ahead. the teams with good players and good records are who you want to shoot for. rebuild you team to compete with those teams, rather than ask for those standards to be lowered, so you can get there more easily.

I think Charles does have a point about players being penalized for being on bad teams. The SW points system gives too much credit for runs and RBI, which are team-dependent stats. That's my main problem with using SW points for all-stars.

When was it ever decided to use SW points to determine all-stars?

I am sorry that I wasn't blessed with a team of all-stars when I came into this league. However, I think you are missing the point. I am not asking you to lower the standards. I realize that most of the players on my team don't fit the bill and that I am not so "above" other teams. But should that exclude me to be included in your ceremony. I think not. If for instance, Greg Maddux was on a below .500 team and didn't post as good of numbers as if he would have been on the Yankees....according to your system you would exclude him?? Interesting. I really don't care and I realize that my team is below yours Wammie, but I brought it up as a possible way to get the lesser teams involved. Since, my team is not worthy, I guess I will have to create the ALL-DUD team so that we could get representation.

Charles, dont take it personally. Just use the lack of all stars as incentive to go out and get some! I don't have any all stars either. One of these days, S.F. will have no all stars too (although, it'll probably be somewhere around season 20). It takes alot work to do the all star teams, and to put in criteria, such as one player from every team, well, that takes even more work.

J-
I am represented with an All-Star this year...I was just giving a suggestion. As stated in a prior thread, I appreciate the work that goes into creating this list. I was providing a possible modification to get more participation with losing teams. You are right, it would be a lot more work. However, at the same time, if it was just stated as such, and not an assumption that I was looking for a way to lower the standards, I wouldn't have taken such offense.

Wammie, I like the 4 middle IF, 4 corner IF, 2 catchers and 6 OF idea. However, there should be a minimum of 1 player per spot. Thats probably assumed already, but say the top 4 corner IF's were all 3rd basemen. We'd have no 1B All-star. Other than that, I too would like to see one representative from each team, but its not a big deal.
