Sports News Leader to produce and host Strat-O-Matic Online Baseball
New York, NY – January 20, 2002 – SportingNews.com, the online unit of The Sporting News (TSN), this week announced that it has partnered with Strat-O-Matic (SOM), the leading provider of statistical-based sports games, to build and host a series of Strat-O-Matic Online Baseball simulation games over a multi-year period.
“SportingNews.com is very excited to be working with the premiere simulation sports game provider,” says Jason Kint, Vice President of Online. “Generations of Americans have played Strat-O-Matic’s board games and CD-ROMs in their living rooms – now the SportingNews.com will offer them the chance to play Strat-O-Matic’s award-winning simulation games online.”
"Our arrangement with SportingNews.com will enable us to reach new Strat-O-Matic users as well as provide a new channel of play for our loyal users," added Hal Richman, SOM Founder and President. "We are excited to get our products online with SportingNews.com." Strat-O-Matic Online Baseball will allow users to manage a team of current and historical Major League Baseball players through a 162-game season against other users. Each game will be played using Strat-O-Matic’s proprietary gaming engine, and results will be influenced by managers’ preferences. Special theme seasons (e.g. “Players from the Fifties”) will also be introduced. Qualified prize-winners from each season will be awarded valuable TSN and SOM merchandise.
In addition to producing and distributing Strat-O-Matic Online Baseball, SportingNews.com will also be selling Strat-O-Matic products through its e-store. Strat-O-Matic season cards, board games and CD-ROMs will be made available for sale to all SportingNews.com members.

Question Erik B. - I see where this press release fails to mention Golf as a product of TSN. What does that mean?

Congratulations. You're associating with the best simulation game company on the market, and one that has been for a long time.
Those interested in S-O-M can subscribe to the Strat-BB List (not run by the game company) to get a sense of what these gamers talk about. Make sure you subscribe via the digest form unless you like getting 100 e-mails a day.

It does sound interesting. Seems like a lot of people have played this game growing up from what I remember of an earlier thread.

So, Erik, do you have an estimate for when this thing will start up?

Wow, good stuff. I have been playing Strat basketball since the 5th grade (circa 1974?). After that I had Strat football in the early 80's. Loved those Dan Fouts pass-happy Chargers!
Also love APBA baseball simulation and PC simulations for them by Miller Associates.
I thought much of the interest in that stuff was dead, with Fantasy Sports being so popular these days...that and the fact that this Simulation forum is usually about Horse Racing or something. ;)

We'll start around the start of the baseball season, if not earlier.
