Hey you horse racing fans, check this out:

SuperSimSearcher

Right now, the database is 100% empty. You'll need to get raceout.zip files from the web. I recommend Supertoy7's site

Once you have a raceout.zip file for a given week, you can locate it from within my program. You add as many or as few raceout.zip files as you desire. The more raceout.zip's, the more complete your histories.

Warning: the database can get quite large. If you download all the raceout.zips from Week 900 to 1019, the database will be about 10 megs. If you download all from week 27 to week 1019, the database will exceed 50 megs.

This is a BETA version. The structure and size of the underlying database is one thing that may definitely change before final release. Also, you'll probably need a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher. I'm not good enough in VB to do the resizing window thing. That, and I have a LOT of information I want to put on the screen. The zip file in the above link has a copy of the Instructions, with a variety of screenshots, so you can see what you're missing out on, even if you don't want a copy of the program itself.

As always, use at your own risk. I think my machine is virus free, and I think these files are virus free. But I make no promises.

Dang. Warning. This is NOT a complete installation. It's only the executable.

It's a simple VB5 program. For those not familiar with VB programming, they rely on having certain files in your c:\windows\system folder. If you have a copy of VB5 or VB6 on your computer, it should work fine.

IF you do NOT have a copy of these programs, then you MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE PROGRAM. I'm working on that issue -- what this means is that I'll probably have to post some additional files for those without VB5 or VB6 so they can run the program . . . I'm looking into that.

OK. I've added a second download option. This second option is a full 2 meg installation program, that should allow you to run the SuperSimSearcher regardless of whether or not you currently own VB5. Note: you'll still need to have 1024x768 windows resolution.

Your 21 inch monitor, StLCards, will be WAYYY more than required...

I just posted what I hope will be the official release version on the same site above.

Mr. Coker will be publishing the software at some point here in the near future, so you should be able to get it from his site, as well. Until then, I'll keep the above links active.

BTW, the program has been officially released at Coker's Sim Stats . Enjoy!

I just released version 2.0 of the program. Should be faster and better than ever.

In fact, I'm hoping this is the last release I'll do for quite some time. I'm not really sure what else I could even conceivably add.

(BTW, it now allows you to access a horse's lineage quickly and easily).

I bought an uninstaller program on Wednesday, so I could free up hard disk space -- mostly so I could use this programme, Madman! Hope it (the Uninstaller) works.

Can't get into Coker's page at the moment...how much space does this 2.0 plus raceouts take? if I'm close, I'll just start deleting other stuff till I get there....

How big is your hard drive? The program itself is tiny -- 190K.

The issue is the database. And you can make that as big as you want -- right now it's up to 58 megs, and growing at 700K per week -- if you download all the raceout.zip archives and then import them (note that each raceout.zip archive takes up a ton of space -- the complete set takes up 140+ megs -- not that you have to keep them).

Let me know what your space situation is like. If you'd prefer, I can re-post the old horses.mdb database. It's about 20% smaller, but the searches are slower. For all the raceout.zip's, it's around 47 megs.

But you don't need all the raceout.zip's for the proggy to be useful. although a complete database turns this thing from a useful tool into an incredibly powerful weapon.

One last thing -- what operating system are you using? If it's Windows 98 or earlier, you may have to install some files to make the Microsoft Jet Pack work. Hmmm. I'm not sure how big all those things are once they are installed and uncompressed. Ouch.

Hmmm. And I forgot about all the *.ocx and *.dll files that are packaged in the program. You likely will have to download the complete version (3.3 megs zipped, probably 6-7 megs unzipped, probably 10 megs installed).

This is the direct link.

I actually maintain the download area and page in my own yahoo server space.

Hmm. I had 150 MB left on my hard drive. After fooling around with my uninstaller, I have...160 MB. I could find more to delete. Is it worth it to try?

Well, more space is always a good thing.

The kicker is that the program will compact the database after each import. That saves you space. However, to do that, I have to create a COPY of the database and store it on your hard-drive. This means you really need about 120 megs for the database itself -- 60 free megs.

As I said, I'm not sure how large the installation runs. Actually, it depends on whether you already have the files in your system (probably not). If you don't have any of them, then it can take up to 15 megs, I bet.

Oh yeah. Obviously, you will want to delete (after you install) all the stuff you download to save room. This means that you should download the SSSComplete. And then unzip to a special directory. Run the setup file that appears in that directory. Then delete that directory, and delete the initial download.

Similarly, each raceout.zip that you download will take between 200K and 2.4 megs. You're going to have to download those a few at a time (yeah, I know, that's a huge pain).

You don't happen to have a CD burner, do you? Or a zip disk? Those are the perfect ways to store the old raceout.zips.

One more thing . . . after doing a bunch of uninstalling on a hard drive that was close to the max, you ought to do a defrag on it. That could significantly boost your performance.

You have enough room as-is to run the program, and keep it operational for a year or so, I bet. But you won't have a lot of extra room . . . I recommend sticking with the new database (that's larger). The speed bonus to an older machine is substantial. Plus, it's easier on the hard-drive, since the program only has to load parts of the database for some searches. The older version of the SSS required a complete reload everytime . . .
