(This is the 2nd week of opening days, after the Rotoguru I division began last week.)
The Flakes and The Gangman invite all to share their thoughts.
If all goes well, we are looking at Natural League II starting up at the All-Start Break. |

Gang sweeps the Otters as Wagner picks up 2 saves, Mike Williams the other. Waiting for the 0-3 Flakes to visit.
Ryan Dempster at 1 mil piches a gem in game 3.
Strat is cool.

Opening Day at Enron. Scandal in the air, Kenny Boy tosses out the ceremonial 1st pitch. Freddy Garcia surrendered a 2-run shot to Cliff Floyd in the 1st. Rickey led off the bottom wth a HR (classic). A-Rod's error in the 5th led to a pair of unearned runs, and the Flakes 4-run 9th fell short. Billy Kock striking out Soriano to end it. Final 7-5.

Man I got shelled, I thought I had a killer team with stacked pitching and a pretty good lineup considering what strong pitching I have.
You'd think a team with Schilling, Moose, Clemens and Pettitte in the rotation and Pujols, Berkman, Ichiro, Nomar, and Tino Martinez I'd be set. Damn.
For everyone's info in potential new leagues: Joe McEwing is really good in this game (considering his < 3 mill price tag). I have him in a league that started a week ago and he is my second or 3rd best hitter. And in this league only Berkman performed better than him in the opening series.

My first venture into Strat-O-Matic baseball, and I fluke into a sweep opening weekend. Pretty much everything broke right for me, but it's hard to predict if that will last. Still, I hope to prove that someone can win at Wrigley, even if it's not the Cubs.
Questions for the more Strat versed people:
The recap seems not to mention outfield assists. I believe one must have occurred in game 1 between the Giants and Lions because the Lions had a man on first in the 4th inning with none out, then Berkman hit a double with 1 out, but it shows the scoring 1-0 b-2. Perhaps the runner on first intentionally avoided scoring by running into the dugout?
The arcane rules of closing. I turned off the option to maximize closer usage and my closer didn't even get into a game this weekend although Farnsworth picked up two, 2+ inning saves and then the computer turned to Tim Worrell(!) in game 3. Seems a little odd that the computer wouldn't have decided ALF was worth pitching at least once.
Are there any REAL, detailed rules to Strat baseball that I can read or download from somewhere, the TSN synopsis is quite brief and really doesn't answer a lot of questions and some of the examples of how to read things leave a lot to be desired. For example, I'm still trying to figure out if outfielder arm ratings (if listed) apply to all OF positions or only the listed position, i.e., if an outfielder is listed as 2(-2)e4 for RF, but has designations of 2e4 for CF and LF (without the arm rating) is that rating implied at the other positions or does it definitely not apply, meaning you could have separate ratings for different OF positions for the same player?
Thanks for any help you can provide. Looking forward to an interesting season.

Otterman here! The sweep was very frustrating, have to get used to how online Strato works. Made some decisions in the first two games that I never would have made in the board game. We'll see how it goes over the next few games.

Flakes Win! Flakes Win! Flakes Win!
Finally... in game 6 ... off the snide ... after beginning the season with a 5-game losing streak,
But the Gang rolled hard - Jason Schmidt striking out 13 flakes in a complete game blowout 12-2,
Flakes managed a total of 16 hits in the series. A-Rod is batting .125

Bulletin:
A trade has been completed with the Lockport Losers. Flakes have accepted the offer of setup man Michael Jackson for Shigetosi Hasagawa.
Lockport, located in upstate New York, sits atop the eastern division with a 6-0 record.

The bigger question....whose awake and trading at 4:38am?
the Flake of course!
That Michael Jackson pickup may not help the Flakes team on the field, but his dancing and singing should help keep the clubhouse loose. But keep him away from the Bat Boy.
As for the Gang.... off to a 5-1 start, the GM would like to see a few more butts in seats for the big early season matchup against the division leading Losers. We're doing a promotion....Smelt night!

The Otters are beginning to think this game is from Bizarro World. It was bad enough in the first series that SOM game engine stuck in LaTroy Hawkins twice and cost me two games, and pinch hit for switch hitting Bernie Williams in the bottom of the 9th when he had 3 RBIs in the game, but last night took the cake: Trevor Hoffman inot close: The sequence: hits batter, walk, walk, Grand Slam. C'mon!! And then, it skips over my fifth starter, as designated in the rotation. Otters attempt to swim again tonight, we are at home, so lets see what happens

I remember our old computer game had an unexplained "walk glitch" and 8 straight batters got bases on balls. It happened once or twice.
Some players clearly performed better on computer than in real life (on paper anyway).
I may resort to letting the computer pick my lineup, if my team continues to suck!
(PS ... to Gang -- Michael Jackson was seen dancing with Mr. D in the bullpen tonight)

If you have four guys who all can start on three days' rest, that's probably why it's skipping the fifth starter. That would make sense for it to play it that way, IMO. I'm sure plenty of people want to use the four-man rotation, and just draft the fifth guy because the game makes you.
I think you pretty much need to fill out the per-game starters, unless you're willing to go a predictable 1-2-3-4-5 (or 1-2-3-4, as the case may be) all season regardless of opponent.

Even if you have only 1 guy who can go on 3 days' rest, it'll put off your 5th guy's start the first time around. e.g.: 1-2-3-4-1-5-2-3...

It's too bad the game doesn't let you make a start on short rest (with diminished effectiveness. I think I read how a reliever can get tired quicker based on his use.

I can see why they don't let you start on short rest... someone could, and probably would, start Pedro every day, for instance. I'm pretty sure it is willing to use relievers who are not at 100% effectiveness, just less willing.

After losing 2 out of 3 to the Jackers earlier this week, I play them again tonight @ Coors & they are "Jackers" in every way. Sosa hit 3 agaist me in one game! at Yankee Stadium! We were outscored 18-7 in the series & I had Unit & Smoltz in my rotation.Check out their lineup! Playing at Coors against this offense is going to be very interesting. I relied on pitching & defense when I played Strat-O in the 80's with some success & I am honestly surprised I am 8-4. COMMENT; I find it very tough to release a player for a "free agent" when you have to pay 20% juice. WOW! Isn't that steep? I notice Bonds & Walker are available. I'd love to have Bonds. Could someone loan me 16 Million? PLAY BALL! Jerry

Nice job sweeping the Jackers, Oertels' 92. My series with the Losers @ PNC looked more like Coors.... double digit runs in every game.

After just 18 games, Flakes RF Juan Gonzales, 3B Vinny Castilla and LF Carlos Lee were waived following a fight on the way to the team bus. After yet another unhappy series at the hands of the Lockport Losers, anger turned to blame, excuses turned to shouting and punches were thrown. Bad blood was spilled all over the clubhouse carpet. Flakes hitters pounded out four runs over three games. All three were given their pink slips and a one-way ticket home. Chipper Jones and Gerald Williams will be brought in to play third base and right field respectively. Daryle Ward takes over in left field full time. Jones was quoted, "I am looking forward to launching a few into the Crawford boxes at Enron Field. His salary of $7.16 million will be happily paid by the Flakes ownership and audited by Arthur Andersen.

It is early, but the Otters have been basking on the banks of victory recently. Tonight, an interesting softball series at Coors Field. Could be double digits for both teams.

Otters, what will be really interesting is whether Coors will host ANY double digit games for the 2002 season of Strat-O-Matic. That humidor might just be the death of Coors field scoring.

I got jacked at Coors Field!
22-7 loss ain't that bad when you consider the Gang's 23-0 thrashing at the hands of LA Jack.
Meanwhile, Flakes can't buy a win, swept again. Gave up a bases-loaded walk to Sosa in the 10th to lose game two.
I think I'll try A-Rod at the bottom of the order. His .231 average doesn't warrant 3rd, 4th or 5th.
H E L P ! ! ! ! !
