Erik, I'm very proud of my team these last
couple weeks. My team has had so many
multiple series injuries to starters but they do
the little things that have kept me winning. I
don't feel as if losing one or two key players
will prevent me from winning.
Virtually none of my players are on the
individual stats leader but with good defense
and good speed, I generate and prevent
enough runs to get the job done.

SV - my biggest worry was to keep McGuire and Thomas on your bench. Green is a stud, Cruz is OK, but other than that your power guys will be watching instead of playing. As long as the ball stays in the park (and in Comerica they usually do) my top flight defense should be able to keep the games close.
Offensively I only have 4 lefties to counter your all RH rotation, but Dye, Pudge and Cabrera all hit righties better anyway. Hopefully, I can get the running game going against your third string catcher.
Should be a great series. I need two out of three to even our records. I think it can be done.

Good series Maniac, I got the Miller part right
with him shutting us out. =) I wish the
manager strategy was a bit more detailed as I
would have liked to play McGwire that game.
Lost another player to injuries, this is getting
tiresome. I'm constantly juggling lineups trying
to patch things together, I don't think I've had
my starting lineup for the last month.
Foulke is really starting to annoy me. He lost
me the second game and for his price is just
not worth it.

Well Erik, your Dodgers look like the class of the league after they took 2 out of 3 from my revamped Maniac team. Although the Maniacs once again blew a late inning lead in Game 1. Seems the manager left Tim Hudson in a couple of hitters too long, which is a shame because my setup men were ready to come in and shut the door.
About the game overall, I take back my earlier comment that perhaps the 80% release rule is too harsh. It IS possible to improve your team despite the penalty, while at the same time it rewards those who chose a more complete team at the start. Keep it the way it is.
It seems the biggest complaint I've seen on the b-boards, and one that I agree with, is the computer manager's use of the bullpen. Not so much with the closer (Nelson has only come in during save situations for me, which is what I expected when I set him on Maximize.) but with the set-up men. A lot of people (myself included) apparently chose to try a righty-lefty combo using two setup men. Unfortunately, the game does not accomodate for this often enough.
Also, the reasoning behind when the computer will pull the starting pitcher has never been very clear. How much difference is there in the different levels of aggressiveness? In Game 1, Hudson (on a Normal setting) definitely was in one hitter too long, and if I had been managing he may have been pulled for my setup men right at the start of the eighth. On the other hand, if I had set the starters to Conservative, would he have even made it out of that 4 run 1st inning? If there were a way to give more specific directions involving your bullpen, especially when working with a lead, I think it would be worthwhile to pursue it.
The rest of the game is great. Keep up the good work, and WATCH OUT! The Maniacs will be back!

All fair comments.
Unfortunately, the sim is the part that we have the least control over. Though already discussions have started about making substitution patterns more complicated.
We're building a Strat-O-Football game, and the biggest (and best) debates that we've had so far have been about giving users as much managerial control as possible.
The Dodgers are proud of their record, but also lucky. My division has made stars of Higginson and T. Clark because it lacks great lefty pitching. In other leagues, this line-up would have produced a .500 club -- but them's the breaks!

Wow, I would think Strat-O football would be a difficult undertaking. Football is much more a coaching-oriented game than baseball is manager-oriented. In baseball the choices are fairly simple and repetitive while the results are complex and varied, while in football the choices are much more complex and the results are more simple. Football also has a time element that adds to the complexity.
Personally, I've never enjoyed those games where you plug in tendency percentages for the playcalling and watch the computer play out a game. I'd much rather be the off/def coordinator and call the plays myself. So if the game is similar to baseball I don't see myself playing it, but I hope it works out for you.

Well, here's the gist of the game:
1) You draft WRs, TEs, RBs, QBs, an OL, a special team, a Defensive Line, Linebackers (in a group) and DBs.
2) You choose a "basic playbook." One will be the Run-N-Gun, one will be Smashmouth (Two TEs), one will be a West Coast Offense, etc.
3) You will have the opportunity to weight long passes, short passes, medium passes, off-tackle runs, inside runs and wide-runs.
4) You will have the opportunity to select certain players for certain types of plays. (You can weigh more inside runs for Alstott, short passes and wide-runs for Dunn).
5) You can set your depth chart.
6) On defense you can double-team players, set blitzing preferences, decide the degree to which you have a LB tracking a QB, decide the degree to which your defense will "react" to the offense's formation, etc.
7) There will be a fatigue factor -- a RB who runs the ball 20+ times will start to be less effective.
8) On both offense and defense, you will be able to change your strategy if you're up by X points, or down by Y points.
Now, here's the key -- we will run one quarter per night. So we see this game as very chess-like. A key to winning will be the ability to predict what your opposition is doing, and to surprise them, and to balance your resources (deciding when to use your stud runningback will be a huge issue).
Thoughts on this? Feedback? We think this game will be outstanding, and will actually force you to make many, many more decisions than Strat-O-Baseball.

About football:
I like the idea of the querter per day thing. Football is all about ajustments during the game.
My only suggestion is to try and get as many strategy and playbook decisions as possible, becuase you can't really get enouth. The more control you have on your team, the better the game will be.
And I think it will be better to get all players as individuals, even the O-Linesman and defesive players. That way there will be more flexibillity for someone who wants, for example, to create as perfect O-Line, or to combine Brooks, Lewis and Urlacher for a monster LB crew.

As far as football's concerned -- the game, itself, does not allow OLs, DBs, DLs, and LBs to be split up, though I agree with your sentiment. The thought, here, is that people tend to think about these things as units anyway. And yes, I agree with you -- the more control the better, though we're not going to get to a play-by-play level anytime soon.

Holy Mackeral. Kudos to the Smithton Maniacs, built to be a defence/one-run-game winner team. What a series they had! Bisons held to 5 hits in 3 games -- only 1 hit in the last two games combined -- which means, if you stop to calculate, that there must have been a --

This should be an interesting pennant race in the West.

Rickey is making all kinds of noise now, he

has been the odd man out. He is demanding
to start or be traded to a team that can use

Very impressive, SV, that's quite a run! My boys are 10-3 the last 13 and we're still losing ground. But we're moving up in the West, now 1 game behind the Bisons with a big 3 game series looming tonight.
And the Maniacs have completed their retooling! After releasing Corey Koskie, who was only playing against RHP, and acquiring veteran pitcher David Cone and part-time slugger Chris Truby, the Maniacs completed only the second trade in Rotoguru I history. Power pitcher Tim Hudson and SS Carlos Guillen were shipped to the Indy Reds in exchange for SS Miguel Tejada and SP Todd Ritchie.
When asked about the deal, GM-Manager Mario Maniac said "We hate to trade away a young talent like Hudson, who's been exceptional for us this year, but we couldn't pass up the added pop that Tejada brings to our shortstop position, without a drop in fielding. We had an excess of quality pitching and we needed to part with some to improve our run production."
Immediately following the deal, the Maniacs released Ritchie and signed slugger Phil Nevin to man the vacant 3B position. "We've finally got the kind of beef we were looking for in the middle of the lineup," said Maniac. "I can't believe Nevin was still available this late in the year." When asked about Nevin's lack of fielding prowess, Maniac responded "I don't expect him to take his glove into the batter's box. Third base has a lower demand for fielding anyway."

I would like to nominate Bret Boone for All Star second baseman. He has
15 Hr 41 RBI .325 .580 .361 .941 despite missing 41 games.
Although come to think of it I dont know if I wanna be the guy who has 3 all stars hitters and cant even break 500.
I also think A-Rod should be All-Star shortstop. He hit 6 home runs and had 11 RBI this most recent series to give his numbers a good boost. I keep hoping Sosa passes him in RBIs so he will have a shot at the triple crown.
While I am nominating things, I nominate all games should be played at Coors Field. I just outscored Kitchen 42-15 while sweeping them. Sosa hit 3 home runs in each of the first two games and Shinjo hit for the cycle in the first game.

The Maniacs take two out of three from the Bisons to move into a tie for 1st place in the West Division.
So far so good with the Nevin acquisition. Big Phil went 8-16 in the series, with 2 dingers, 5 runs scored and 6 RBI, leading the Maniacs to a respectable 30 runs in the series.
Miguel Tejada and David Cone where not as fortunate. Tejada went 0-12 while Cone was roughed up for 10 earned runs in just over 2 innings.
Bret Boone is a solid choice as All-Star 2B. If he performs in the 2nd half like he did in the first, he'll be on the end of the season team for sure.

competively matched rubbergame. Ramon
Ortiz got a hard luck loss due to Giambi's 2
errors. Hate to lose the game on an error but
that's the price of having shaky D on the
corners.
BIG series tonight between the Shelby's and
the hated Dodgers. I really think I'm going to
sweep tonight- I feel it. Both teams have lost
their starting catcher, but I have a surprise
catcher acquistion planned for the lowly
Dodgers.

A question regarding ballpark homers: A lot of times the card will have a split result, for instance on a 1-10 roll the result may read

Does that mean the ballpark check only occurs on Home Run rolls? Or do you ignore ANY 1-10 result and check for a ballpark result?
