Starting a new thread as we move out of the dog days and race for the playoffs....

Huge battle looms tonight as the West leading Maniacs travel to Shelby-ville to take on the league leading Shelby-villians. The matchup has double importance since it's the regular season record that counts for the cash and this is the last such meeting between the two clubs.

Both teams are playing without key contributors; the Maniacs continue to be without Kevin Millar (.326 BA, .913 OPS) while the Shelby-Villians recently lost 2B Roberto Alomar (.296 BA, .836 OPS).

The Shelby-villians are looking for a measure of revenge, as the Maniacs have taken the rubber match in both series to date. The Maniacs hope to take at least 2 of 3 in order to gain ground in the race for the league's best record.

Both teams will continue to ride their major midseason acquisitions. Jason Giambi has been a force for Shelby-ville, batting .344 with 10 homers, 25 RBI and 24 runs scored in just 26 games. Maenwhile, Phil Nevin has been just as hot for the Maniacs, hitting .377 with 8 homers, 21 RBIs and 17 runs scored in just 18 games.

It should be a tight, hard fought series. In the end it may come down to the performance of the bullpens, which is why I like the Maniacs to grab two out of three (Games 1 and 3). Jeff Nelson is a grade A closer, outweighing Shelby-ville's bullpen by committee.

Big series indeed. Losing Alomar hurts big
time with my lineup- I've had to rearrange a
good deal.

Looked at some replacement 2Bs but can't
really get an advantage as my backup 2B is
great defensively.

Hope things work out- need big games from
Giambi and Green.

The Maniacs announce themselves as a legitimate title contender by taking two of three from the Shelby-villians. Although I have no idea what happened in Game 3, guess my boys were too hungover from celebrating after their Game 2 romp.

Hopefully, they can resume their winning ways with Kevin Millar back in the lineup tonight.

48 games left, and no division has more than five games separating 1st and 2nd. Sprint baby, sprint!

The Dodgers continue, meat-and-potatoes style, to accrue wins. Taking 2 out of 3 is like breathing for me -- a part of life.

Two amazing thing happened. 1. i finally swept a series. Doesn't happen often. Even more amazing is that i did it in three low scoring close games. the Hunter offense usually tends to score quite a bit more than they did this weekend.

2. The computer used my bullpen perfectly in the ninth inning of game 3. My starter started the ninth with me up by one. he got the first out but gave up a single to the second batter. The computer then brought out my right handed closer Antonio Alfonseca. He gave up a single and got an out while facing two right handed batters. Then with two outs it brought in my left handed closer john Franco to face a left handed batter. Franco got the out to save the game. Good job Computer!!

It wasn't so close in the East for a long time. Maccabi take 2 from the Dodgers to close the gap to 3 games only. Pedro was injured in the 2nd game of the series, and will miss his next start for the Dodgers.

The Maniacs flush away a good start in interdivisional games (4-2 vs Hunters and Shelby-ville) by gettting swept by the Reds. Two close losses followed by a 5-0 shutout at the hands of former-Maniac Tim Hudson. Yikes! Payback's a bitch!

With 30 games to go, the Maniacs look to put a stranglehold on the West division AND make some major noise in the overall standings with a dozen games against East powers Macabi Kiriat Gat and the Brooklyn Dodgers.

The scheduling gods must be in my favor, as it looks like I'll be seeing star pitchers Pedro and Mussina only once each in the four series, and according to the rotations my star Wade Miller will be the opponent both times. Games 140 and 144 for anyone interested. Should be some great duels.

Shelby-villian's are barely holding on... A little
slump combined with major injury problems
the last couple weeks has turned the
momentum.

Won a key series agains the Idiots to further
cement Central but I need to get my lineup
together to keep the pressure on.

Hey if any of you guys are looking for a
midseason roto league... I need one manager
for a Yahoo 5x6 (regular 5x5+OBP) league
composed mostly of people from
rotoguru.com. Live draft this Friday, 7:30 EST.

Only big requirement of the league is that
everyone's promised to finish to the end. If
anyone's interested, please mail me ASAP-
one spot left...

Only 5 games between the top 5 teams.

Gonna be a very close run for the $50. Remember that becuase we started early, the team with the best record gets it, not the winner of the playoffs.

Well I WAS in that tight race. But I have officially fallen out of contention after losing 12 in a row and 16 out of 18. I had been putting a charge towards the wild card, at one point pulling within 2 games I believe but now I guess I am just letting my division mates get the wild card unless I can win a game sometime soon.

That's interesting Donkey. If you only didn't
have to the Reds in your division. Wonder
what it was that they kept beating you... Any
ideas?

Down to our last week. Just won another key
series vs. the Idiots. One more series vs.
them and as long as I don't get swept, I think I
can pull it out. If the standings hold, it would
be:

Shelby's (1) vs. Idiots (4)
Dodgers (2) vs. Maniacs (3)

But... Kiriat Gat and Bisons/Impalers can get
in with some wins and/or some luck. Should
be an exciting finish!

Good luck everyone.

2-19. I need a rally monkey.

Couldn't find rally monkey in the manager strategy anywhere. So instead I changed all of the strategys to the exact opposite they were now. All my very aggressives became very conservative and vice versa.

Maccabi Kiriat Gat sweep the Dodgers to tie things up in the east.

Looks like the Shelbys are running away with the money though... 5 game lead now.

Maniacs maintain their two game lead in the West by taking two of three from the Reys. Their lone loss: a 14 inning 1-0 pitcher's duel between Kevin Brown and Wade Miller. The Rey's turn 4 double plays!

Seven teams remain in the hunt for the 4 playoff spots!

Magic Numbers:
East: Brooklyn & Maccabi 13
Central: Shelbyville 8
West: Smithton 11

After over 100 games of looking up at the Dodgers, Maccabi Kiriat Gat now stands all alone on top of the East division. With only 6 games left, it's all up to Mike Mussina and the rest of Maccabi's stuff to try and keep it going.

Things got very interesting in the central as well, as the Idiots sweep the Shelbys to cut the lead to only 1 game.

In the West, the Bisons are very much alive after sweeping the Maniacs. Doesn't look like the WC will come from there, so this is a race for a single playoff spot.

What the ...?! No more than a 1 game lead in any division? NBC must be televising this league, I smell a fix...

Bisons own the tie-breaker, all they have to do is match the Maniacs the rest of the way to win the division. Impalers not out of it yet.

A wild night of sweeps last night! The Maniacs sweep the Impalers (on the road!) and the Bisons sweep the Reys to stay dead even in the West. They switch opponents tonight.

The Dodgers sweep the Pimps while the Kiriat Gat can only take two of three from the Kitchen to even up that race. Those two powers square off tonight at Brooklyn in a winner take all battle.

Congratulations to the Shelby-villians, who won two of three from the Reds while the Idiots where amazingly swept by a resurgent Donkey Hunter team. They've clinched the Central Division by virtue of owning the head-to-head tiebreaker with the Idiots, and can win 1st place overall with two wins tonight.

One more night of thrills to go! Can you stand it?!

I have to think that Shelby is now the favorites to take the playoff championship. Shelby and the Dodgers both go up 2-0 in the first round of the playoffs. Unfortunately for the Dodgers Jeff Cirillo is out for the remainder of the playoffs and Tony Clark is out until game 3 of the finals.
