I have a lot of action going this week.

Recap of racing last week... Jericho Velvet hit 109.9 to win an allowance race over 8f on turf. That horse is so erratic. Can't get rid of him when he puts up numbers like that, but geez. Gotta suffer through 3 95's to get to it. Actually, I may start him at 9f; he hasn't really had a decent chance at longer races, and maybe he's been erratic because he's not really a sprinter. This 109.9 means he can at least go 8f. His only 9f race was a 76 speed win, so who knows how fast he can go at that distance. 12 and 11f look too long, but there's a BIG difference in the sim between 9f and 11f.

Meteor Shower, another bargain baby homebred into low-tag claimers, won another starter for me. His record hasn't been that great, but good enough to help turn Madman3 around a bit lately.

Black Tie Senor(ire) ran a 78.1 as a 2 year old. Might have been worth the $6m, afterall.

Secret Society, my only stakes winner ever, IIRC, is really starting to upset me. 10th place.

Otherwise, that's about it. This week, however, I'm going to be interested to watch...

Infamous Sunday 2 year old filly from Madman4 stables. Sunday Silence x Woodman x Sadler's Wells. Don't remember the cost exactly, but she wasn't cheap. 400-550 range.

Afternoon Storm 2 year old colt from rotciv. Rainbow Quest x Storm Bird x Sadler's Wells. Have a lot of hope for this Northern Dancer DS inbred (ND is great-granddaddy and 2-great granddady of this horse, both on dam-side).

Saxon Dusk (from Winston Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples... always loved that chapter title), 2 year old filly, Summer Squall x Red Ransom x Sadler's Wells. ND is a grand-daddy and 2-great-granddady of this filly, but I don't think that qualifies as inbred, not sure.

Finishes my rotciv freebie points, and a bit more. Obviously, I was excited to get Saddler's Wells as DDS. So excited, I didn't even run him through the DDS stats -- I had just THOUGHT he was good for distance... My old breeding.txt file has the average speed of 11+ attempts (max) to be 72.3 on dirt, which is pretty freaking good in the sim... not too many observations, however. Furthermore, the max speeds aren't that great. So I may have screwed myself a bit. We shall see.

Surely ONE of these three will have to be decent?

My logic was that after July 1, the mandatory rest period for 2 year olds starts to decrease, meaning they are more viable as regular runners. Thus, now was the time to go for it.

More MUNDANE news:

Ms. Secretive looks to win 8/10 and goes off at 4/5 odds. Couldn't resist keeping her in starters.

Light Jupiter and Tow's Terms are both going back to work; so far their returns from injuries have been less than spectacular.

19 horses going, lots of good young horses that I've bred. It's a sign of how my barns have changed. Unable to acquire good claiming material (actually, unwilling to spend the time looking for the most part), I've concentrated on breeding my own. 9 of the 19 going this week were bred by myself, and all of the others have been in my barns for awhile now.

Also, my fastest runner, Val's Desert is going off at 3/1 in an open allowance run in NJ. I gave him a rest after his 111, and he still threw a stinker up last time. But, speed ratings seem to vary quite a bit on the extreme distances -- i.e., sprints and marathons. It will be interested to see if I can make this horse competitive in short sprints. In general, sprints are extremely competitive in the sim, and 5 year olds or older have it even worse.

I'm getting back into the mix this week after a few weeks off.

Ally's Dixie (DIXIELAND BAND x ALYDAR x STAGE DOOR JOHNNY) bred and named after my daughter Allyson Dixie, is the favorite at 5/2 in a 6f maiden race. Bred her as a 3yo and this will be only her 2nd race. She ran a 75SP over 5f dirt her FTO so who knows.

Hero Grub was entered into a stakes race in MD this week. This race wound up with 13 entries. I think she'll compete but get passed at the end. Top 3 would be nice if she can hold on.

My 2yo The Golden Knight,GOLD RULER x ASCOT KNIGHT x NASHWAN, gets another start. Hopefully will do much better after getting injured in her 1st maiden run.

Red Lightning, 2yo filly, is making her second start as well. Moving to grass this time after an unimpressive 59 on dirt. RED RANSOM x MAJESTIC LIGHT x CAERLEON

First, a couple bets I like this week...same old thing, long races and horses who have proven they can go the distance.

One is my own Ministry of Chaos, PP4, in 2001, a 3.5KN3L claimer at 14 furlongs on the turf. She can go 14; the rest are unproven. Of course one or more of the entrants who have never tried may be able to as well, but at 14/1, an across the board bet isn't likely to cost you anything and could make a lot. Picked to win as the longshot of the week by hornedfrog in the Indiana tipsheet; hornedfrog is the stables that just nipped me out at the end in GSR Division 2 last contest.

Also 7709, PP3, T.H. Wagon, 10/1, 2-mile endurance test, straight win bet since the 1/9 shot will be in the money and depress the other prices.

In other news...my 3-year-olds have been blocked at the 2x level --Arctic Bean tries to sneak around that barrier at 4/5* in a track-restricted allowance in North Carolina 4011. Her MSW win was in a route, and I think she can handle this one today.A P Fappi, who has cooled off, goes off at 3/1 in China 8208 an N2X.

My last well-bred 2-year-old, Private Party (Dixieland Band x Private Account x Mr. Prospector) is 4/1 and sharp in her opener, a 4.5 f MSW in Arkansas. Best 2-year old so far is Gold River II(Ire), who ran a 76 last week. Used up my welfare points last week breeding a 3-year-old for the GSR 3-year-old breeders challenge. The sire is Consul General.

Hank's Rattles proceeds down the claiming ladder, today a 2/1 favourite at 15K here at beautiful Woodbine. In retrospect (since I assume I will lose him), I should have tried him at a mile a few more times...it just seems counterintuitive when he's fading at 6 furlongs. If they carded 5 f stakes for older horses, he'd be a world champion....

And Barefoot Morris, one of my few original horses left, is still plodding along in claimers, running at 6/1 this week in a 2.5K Iowa event.

Saxon Dust--great name. I want that horse, just for the name, even if the horse never breaks 40. Stick it in a claimer, OK?

"My 3 year old's are stuck at the A2x level" . . . I'd take that problem, Toral :))

Strange how stables, like horses, seem to go in cycles. Madman4 had 6 horses going today. Old-time reliable Private Count (5th of 5), claimer Silence in Skogby (had a low tag, hasn't done crap, I entered him too high this week 125K claimer and he got waxed), and homebreds Steady State (2nd), Agrippina (claimers NTO), Starkly Secret (76.0 over 6f in $13.5K C2L was good only for 6th?!?), Infamous Sunday (50.9 speed, FTO)...

Agrippina, Steady State, Infamous Sunday were all 400-500 point horses. Granted, Infamous Sunday may turn out to be the next Turf champion. But almost no hope for dirt. Agrippina is glue. Steady State has shown some ability, but nothing super outstanding.

That stable has gone through quite a bit of turnover, and is getting WORSE not better. Bad luck with breeding, trouble getting claims, older horses stalling out . . . sigh. That stable used to be my pride and joy...

Contrast that to rotciv stable which can't seem to slow down. This stable used to be my dog. This week, however, it had 3 winners and 2 seconds in 7 attempts, including my new personal speed record of 112.0. Ms. Secretive won her 8th in 10 tries pretty easily; Honey Bunny rebounded for a 97.6f victory, also in starters -- trying to get her feet under her; Val's Desert set that speed record with a nice allowance win in NJ, Saxon Dusk cranked a 76.7 to just lose her FTO attempt (sorry Toral, going to keep her for awhile), American Mint finished a respectable 2nd in a 10f dirt A1x race... My bombs in that stable were Afernoon Storm (53.0 ugh. Gotta try turf), and Silent Prince (do I hear glue factory??? fastest is 62.9 in 3 tries -- 3 year olds . . . name got screwed up anyway. . . may drop to MC's NTO).

More strikingly, the only horses I've had in that barn since the beginning of the year are Val's Desert (acquired mid December) and American Mint (bred in Nov., IIRC). Almost all new blood. I have 26 wins this year (103 races) , 19 last year (104 races).

I now have 45 wins in Rotciv (45-39-19-19-21), including my only two 110+ speed runs. Meanwhile Madman4 -- fastest to 30 wins -- has yet to hit 40... (39-46-31-19-22)... 24 wins last year, 15 this year... AND GETTING WORSE... UGH.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Tow's Terms 96.5 for 5th in A2x, Light Jupiter cranked another 100, but only good for 4th... Georgia Park is done with his tag, finished 3rd in 96.1... Enigmatic (2 yo) finished in 71.7 for 3rd...

All in all, I've got some serious dawgs for 2 year olds, but I have to look at the bright side. I've got a number of young horses that have broken the 70-75 barrier. Depending on how they develop, they might be able to win a few allowance races and stick in my barns for a year or so... right guys? Please say yes?? :)

2 YEAR OLD SUMMARY:
MADMAN999
Enigmatic...71.1
Red Summer... 78.1
Irish Green II...79.6

ROTCIV
Afternoon Storm...53.0, 1 race
Black Tie Senor(ire)...78.1
Perfect Storm Too...60.5, no longer in barn
Saxon Dusk... 76.7, 1 race

MADMAN4
Infamous Sunday... 50.9, 1 race

MADMAN3
Pleaseant Gulch... 55.8, 1 race
In Quest of Gold... 66.5 (in maiden in 1320)
Wood Nymph... 50.9 in 2 races, ugh

All in all, some of those dawgs are going to get better. In Quest of Gold is much better than that record indicates, surely, since that best was set in his maiden run way back in week 1320. So, although I have no guaranteed stakes quality runners, I'm desperately trying to look at the bright side... namely that even though I have very few winners so far as 2 year olds, I should be able to squeak some wins from this group, and get some 90+ speed ratings from them after they mature... I hope.

Otherwise, I will have to refine my breeding practices. Right now, I just throw the best sires I can get together and see what happens.

Good grief. To reinforce the "lucky stable" v. "unlucky stable" bit . . .

Rotciv finally got a claimer for me . . . Leaf Cutter Ants(ire)

Paid $50,000 for him. Geez. Granted, he might not be very good. But I was intrigued by his record. First, he's young -- 3 years old. Secondly, in his first race, he ran an 82.9 over 9f, surely RTG. Next time out (the very next week), he ran 49.0 in an A1n race . . . yeah, go figure.

This week, he ran an 88.6 over 6.5f on dirt. Granted, there is a lot unknown about this horse, and a $50K tag is pricey. But surely you can see why I was intrigued by the possibility of at least moderate ability. Especially after this race, he's now had reasonable success on both surfaces, and over two dramatically different distances.

One slot open in that stable, that's the horse I got. Two slots open in Madman999, no horses (I even included a bid for this horse, IIRC). Rich get richer, poor get poorer.

2 wins last week a 2nd, 3d and then....

Show Me the Green (3yo colt)- a HB from last year, came in 2nd running a 90SP over 8f dirt in a track restricted allw.

Ally's Dixie - a 3yo HB filly from this year broke her maiden at 6f dirt running an 87SP in her second outing.

Hero Grub - decided to take the week off and walked around the track in an 8f dirt stakes race. This was very dissapointing. Will go for another stakes race next week, 1481, and if she doesn't run then I will assume she is just not a stakes grade horse and put her back into allowance for awhile.

Unknown Camcorder - a 3yo colt I picked off waivers last year won a claim race going away with an 86SP over 8f dirt. Kept him too, but still I think he is just claimer material.

My best 2yo so far is my filly River of Gold Again. She started with 2 place finishes and has 2 wins since, in only 4 races. Her breeding is Atticus x Forty Niner x Riverman.

Blushing Niner is undefeated winning in her only race so far. She is by Forty Niner x Blushing John x Bering(GB).

Overall my homebreds are doing fairly well, but I don't see any graded stakes winners in them just yet.

After I took a few weeks off I am looking at some of my horses differently now. Some I wonder why I bother trying to find Allw. races they might win in, when obviously they are claimer material. I may rethink that once my stables get depleted, but right now they are still pretty well full.

Good luck this week. River of Gold Again gets another chance to show her stuff this week. I also entered Sixth Deputy in an 8.5f turf stakes race this week as I think he is ready to pop.

I entered Jericho Velvet in a Stakes race this week -- 5415. He's gone 109 twice over 8f on turf, that should theoretically be good enough to compete in Stakes... If he has the class. There were/are something like 24 horses signed up for that stakes race. Totally unbelievable.

Good luck with River of Gold Again. I think that may be a really special horse.

Whoo. For a minue I thought Sixth Deputy was going to run against Jericho Velvet, but he is in 5213, 15 entries in that one. Given recent performance I maybe should have entered him on dirt, but he popped a 112 on both surfaces at 8.5f so who knows.

Well, JV is in 5213 as the backup. :)

Wouldn't be a problem to have a grudge match between the two horses. Sixth Deputy is more accomplished, but JV is my best turf runner and the only one from my barns that would stand a chance.

BTW, IMO, 6th Deputy is surface versatile; granted, only that one explosion on turf, but it was a big one. Generally, turf races are easier, IMO.

I had to type in the ages by hand and I got tired. Gold River has been bred over, and I was too lazy to try to find him in old files, so I quit.

As I said, I didn't spend a lot of time -- just brushed up.

BTW, these are the horse records since the beginning of this year, I think. I need to double-check, but I THINK these are the records WITH your stables only, as well. Not 100% sure.
