Thought I'd start up the new thread for this week since races are posted.

I won't go into detail -- I've spent my time in the other threads updating stats.

But I did want to mention that Ice Princess is at 7/1 in 7303 under VPDavis. That's right -- I'm riding my own horse. I guess if she blows the race, I have no one to blame but myself!!

Dang. Wish I would have stuck to my diet a bit better. Oh well.

I'm mainly just hoping that Ice Princess can go 9f... if so, those odds are absurdly high, I think.

All my horses were only RTG and I didn't enter any this week. Good luck to everyone else.

Only 7 horses going this week. Entered a 2-year-old I had claim blocked in a claimer. Doh.

Madman, maybe you can help me with a training problem. I picked up a horse recently, don't remember why, called The French At War (74043). The horse has talent and works out well, but as it approaches the gate in a real race, it panicks and takes off in the opposite direction.

Ze enemie, ze are all around us! Flee I say, fleee! I am a proud French soldier, and I must not get my uniform dirtie!

Hilarious. The French at War. What a name for a horse. Not surprised it hasn't won anything :).
-----------------

Seriously ... hmmm. Well, the good news is that it cranked a 70.5 over 8f. Looks to me like it is running too many races at 9f or higher. The start%'s indicate to me that this is not a good idea. At least for now, I'd keep him at 8f or under.

The 6.5f Dirt try is odd. The start % there is whacked -- 75%. I think she deserves a shot in mid-priced maiden claimers in sprints. If after a dirt and turf try at 6f fails miserably, then the only next hope is a real marathon. Obviously, I don't think that is likely based upon start%'s...

The good news is that this horse is young, and isn't a total dawg. If you can get a maiden claim win in the immediate future, she's got a beautiful 2K tag that might not be a total waste of time.

Just to make sure my equivocation is clear --- with these sorts of claimers, it's also possible that crosscreek has been screwing with the horse's start%'s, so all my introductory analysis may be out the window.

But I'd try a 6f race, and/or 6.5-7 again. And at least one on dirt. But this horse will never be a world beater, so I wouldn't hesitate to keep her in 10K claimers.

Just looked over my entire race card. Man, I'm looking forward to races this week!

Madman3 has Chee Whizz, DDay, Secret Society, and Wood Nymph going. No biggie's there, although I really would like to see Secret Society and DDay crank it up.

Madman4 has Infamous Sunday in a make-or-break turf try, Key West at 21/1 who may be running out of time, Private Count at 12/1, Sal at the Bell at 5/2, but over 10f on turf, and Steady State who looks like he should finally break his maiden -- maybe -- at 9/5.

Madman999 has High Priestess again with a surface change that really needs to go well, and maybe my #1 race of the day -- Ice Princess.

Rotciv I am really loving this stable at the moment. Honey Bunny goes back to routes and she's a very good horse. Leaf Cutter Ants(ire) is a tweener that might have some potential for a few races -- he's 5/1. Ms. Secretive will be going for win #10 and is at 8/5 on turf again. Saxon Dusk is at 4/1 and showed some serious ability in her maiden (note: she's RTG again, however, since I couldn't get her sharp). Their Cakes is an interesting claim acquisition that I'm playing with for the first time, and, of course, the inestimable Val's Desert who goes off at 7/2 despite being in the 13th position under a lousy jockey.

Granted, Val's Desert is due for a bad one ... but's this is his second race back from a voluntary rest, and the guy has just been incredibly solid for me.

Just thought I would try to spread my rare and temporary enthusiasm. :)

One of the ugliest weeks on record for my barns. Unbelievable. I'm not even going to go into all the failed and or mediocre performances.

17-1-1-2-4-0. Yeah, that's right. 8 top 5 placers out of 17 runners. OUUUUCCCHHHH.

Unbelievable. Only highlights:

1) Ms. Secretive wins her tenth in an exciting and close A1x race. Her first allowance win. Hopefully there will be more, but who knows.

2) Val's Desert cranks a 109.2 to finish second in a tough allowance competition in Illinois. With a better pole position or jockey, he could have taken the field.

3) Ice Princess runs a 95.4 to finish 4th in her A4x run. Looks like she has a ceiling afterall. Not a bad run, especially if it is an off-run.
------------
Downside ... so many to mention, I'll just stick to the real ugly.

1) Steady State -- 0.3 speed rating from the 9/5 favorite.

2) Saxon Dusk -- loses 20 speed rating points to finish a dismal 11th in her 8f attempt.

3) Sal at the Bell runs an all-time worst 68 speed rating to prove to me that he doesn't like turf all that much and probably doesn't have much endurance either.

4) Private Count runs her second straight 85 over 8f on turf. This filly is stuck in a serious rut. May have to breed her.

This is making me sick. I'm done listing the crap.

Going to breed over Alyrun Wing (finally) today ... Storm Bird x Alydar will be the new dam-side breeding. Not sure who I'm going to use as the sire yet. Similarly, I'm going to get a super-bargain breed for Madman999.

And maybe thinking about taking a few of my horses from Madman3 or Madman4 and selling them to a carnival or something.

I just bred "Magic Combo" over 27619 in madman999 -- it's the same breeding as Ms. Secretive. She has 10 wins in 14 runs, with over $90K in earnings all for 25 points of breeding. I figure that that sort of success deserves another shot. :) Going for a 3 year old even though it is late in the season since I need to churn some serious points with madman999.

In madman3, I bred Ergodic Theory for 362 points. Fusaichi Pegasus x Alyrun Wing. Alyrun Wing was Storm Bird x Alydar, and had 100+ speed credentials. It will be interesting to see how that horse pans out. Almost certainly, it wasn't worth putting up with the tremendous number of losses that Alyrun Wing saddled my stable with (winless in 22 tries!). Alyrun was "Layoff!" so I figured now is the time. Ergodic Theory will be a two year old, hoping to salve the absolutely pathetic crop of 2 year olds that madman3 has accumulated over the past several months.

Moderately important question -- I emailed Mike asking about Graded Stakes runs, and he indicated that they are not password protected. Fair enough. (BTW, he may be releasing some code soon, so I can improve SSS or others can develop more and better aps).

However, GSR lists a few of their races as Group races ... are those open??? Or what? I'm confused. Do any of you guys know of any password protected Graded Stakes???
-----------------------

Otherwise, let's go for regular Stakes runs. I will put up the cash for one. Time to start putting it up... Here's a plan (note: not locking this in... just sharing information to make everything work well, mostly copying from you guys) ...

I will sponsor 1607.76??, RotoGuru Championship, 2 year old Colts, 6.5f, Dirt.

Another idea would be to have each race held in our home states ... Not sure we want three owner-restricted races in Connecticut. If we do this, I'm now in Arkansas, so it would be 1607.06??

Actually, now that I think about it, if we end up sponsoring three races on the same weekend, maybe we should do it that way. I personally hate it when a group screws with the race schedules for a single track by pumping up 3 races. If we only go for 2, then maybe both of them should be in Connecticut.
-------------------
Each owner can nominate 3 horses for the Colt Championship ... you won't have to submit names or anything. I'll just post the password here when it comes closer to time (or when I get it).

I know Cab ran races in week 1509. Not sure about anything else.

Not really clear to me. What are the 3 races going to be? Are they all supposed to be the same week?

StL -- well, I left part of that open since I didn't want to commit anyone else to paying for races. Since you and Toral have both offered to buy races, what about the following ...

All week 1607 ...

Colt Championship (2 year old)
Filly Championship (2 year old)

Overall Gurupie Championship (8f? 10f? Dirt?)

OR ... we could have a sort of series. Those are exciting as well. But I'm a bit worried about tying up 2 year olds in a series, and I think Toral is right when he implicitly argues that our best horses are hopefully 2 year olds ...

But all of this is up for debate. What I was doing was basically starting the ball rolling ... regardless of what anyone else does, I'll sponsor a 2 year old Colt Championship on 1607 (barring complaints) and then you guys can build from there (or not, whatever you guys want to do).

Clear as Missouri Mud?

BTW, I'm not married to 1607, either. But 2 year olds need a good 3-4 weeks of prep. 1607 is on Dec. 14. This gives all of us 10 weeks to get our horses ready. I might have ideally scheduled it a couple of weeks earlier, but Thanksgiving messes me up a bit... and later is Christmas.

We are probably going to need a few more days to debate this all the way through (at our rate!!) :), and the extra time also gives us the chance to advertise it on the Gurupie forum or something in case Cab or goatlocker or JKaye or any other the guys are still interested or around.

BTW, I'd like to get more owners rather than fewer. If we can get 6 owners or something interested, then obviously we can't still have 3 horses each ... this may also be a tangential advantage to an older horse championship ... some of those guys may not have quality 2 year olds.

I'll buy the filly 2yo race for the same week we decide on for the colt race. Any track is fine with me, and I kind of like the home track idea, so my preference would be MO.

I just noticed that jkaye1 has been eliminated from the game, but his other two stables are still there.

Goatlocker appears to be long gone. FYI.
-----------

I like the home-track idea, as well, StL. Assuming we go for a third race, I think that's the way we should go.

We should also work on a small banner logo to link to the site. And/or a webpage for the championships.

Weird. Ergodic Theory turned out to be Ergodic Storm. I guess I changed it or typed it without thinking. Actually, "Ergodic Storm" is a rather frightful thought. Kinda cool. Not sure it makes any technical sense, but the idea of a "space-filling" storm (to hack the definition) should strike fear into the competition.

Both Ergodic Storm and Magic Combo turned out to be females. $5,000,000 and $30,489.

Magic Combo is going straight into $2K claimers, of course. Going to try for that super awesome tag, and hope that she'll be a good enough horse to make use of it. And, of course, if she isn't, well, then she deserved to be in $2k claimers anyway. :) Haven't had a newbie horse claimed in FTO yet, but I'm sure it could happen. If Mike changed the breeding costs, it SHOULDN'T happen, but I'm not sure he ever got around to it.

Cool cab. Glad to know you are around. If you have a moment, get your colts and fillies prepped. Also sounds like waiting until December may be good for you.
--------------

Which brings me to my next point -- I can't do it on 1607. Just found out at work that I'm going to be gone that whole time period leading up to races that weekend. Without internet access, I cannot submit my race entries, so I can't enter my horses. UGH.

What about week 1600?

Whoo-ee. Add filly Private Party to the 2-year-old stakes list. She won her MSW, running an 86 on good dirt.

Now I'm as confused as Hell what I'm buying. If Cards is doing the filly stake, then I do the overall Gurupie championship, right? What is that? For 3+? What distance, surface? It's 1600? (That week is fine with me.)

It'll be in Ontario, then.

I confirmed that graded stakes races cannot be password protected (at least not from the bid race link). A password protected Stakes race will cost $15.

What would an appropriate distance be for a 2yo in Dec? Week 1600 looks like Dec. 7th?

Private Party Congrats on that rather extraordinary run. Rather amazing. Two pretty bad attempts at 4.5f on dirt and 6.5f on turf. Then an explosion at 5.5f. WTF????

Maybe she threw a shoe her first time out that you didn't see? Maybe she just can't run 4.5f? Maybe she's a mudder? Man alive ... hard to figure performances. Guess that means I shouldn't give up on a few of my two year olds after just a couple of races.
----------------------------
Toral -- Yep, if you are willing. I don't really have a strong preference who sponsors what ... just so long as we have some variety.

I recommend 3 year old +, open, dirt, 8f.

10f might be a more fitting championship length, but, to be frank, we don't have that many horses that can go 10f with significant ability, IMO.

But if anyone has a reason to go with something else, feel free to adjust.

Basically, I think it would be cool to get something like this going, so that if we ever do get more Gurupie participation, it will give them something to look forward to. Or us. :)

Not to mention that we might be able to get some gurupies to start playing again if we do stuff like this.

Dunno. It's not terribly creative, but it's a start.

NEW TRACKS -- Eastern Kentucky (83), South Africa (84), Puerto Rico (85) and Jamaica (86).

E. Kentucky looks to be a high class track, SA in the middle, and PR and Jam. cheapies. FYI. Don't know much about travel costs, but could make eastern USA even more attractive if the travel costs are reasonable.
