Congrats to Toral ... what a week. I'll let him describe. Mine Devastation is looking pretty tough. Not to mention Main Mast CB :). Congrats. I am highly jealous. :)

----------------

My stables rebounded to have a decent day. Light Jupiter continued his comeback from mediocrity by winning his second allowance run in 3 tries ... in a personal best (for him) 107.9.

Ergodic Storm 2 year old filly bred from Alyrun Wing took her first step in justifying the absurd patience I showed with the breeding of Alyrun ... she won her maiden in her first attempt, clocking a 76.3 to win by 2.5 lengths with a mighty kick.

Tsultress won her first race of the YEAR ... yeah, that's right. This filly has never finished worse than 5th for me, but hadn't notched a victory since 1166!! The key here was that I got lucky with a short field.

One big problem with the super-fast way I do race entries is that I appear to be hitting tough and deep fields ... I don't check the competition out at all ... 7 of the 10 races I ran in this week had 12-14 horses. For my older horses with some talent, I should maybe start trying to target smaller Stakes fields or something.

Interestingly, Magic Combo ... the duplicative Ms. Secretive breeding STUNK with a 44 speed performance. I'll have to try her on turf. Looks like that may be 25 points down the toilet.

My starter allowance horses looked adequate ... nothing extraordinary. Gold Ant notched a second place finish... Speedy Whatson actually stunk up the joint, making me think his 100+ may have been a fluke...

Autumn Dancer came back from injury to join in the ranks of the "Madman 100" club . . . I've now had 53 races over 100 speed performed by 16 different horses.

BTW, it looks like gaz is back, and in GSR... Vampire1-4 stables has his trademark. Probably also Vampiress in Division 1.

I think I'm going to drop GSR. I'm not participating much in the contests, and I don't really want to compete against a bunch of people warping the game. Just an FYI.

How is GSR warping the game? I have entered one contest and found it pleasant, although my entries absolutely stank. I can't use the MB right now, unfortunately, because it causes my browser to hang. Are you sure it's not just the frustration of looking at the Top of Division One that frustrates you? ;)
----------------------------------

I've just purchased my credits. What do I do now, stakewise? What's our banner? What's the name -- Gurupie Championship, RotoGurupie Championship? A mile had been suggested but I would like to make it 8.5 furlongs, simply because that was the main route distance at Ontario when I learned horse racing. Any objections? How many entries do we want -- the usual 14?

8.5f is fine by me Toral.

I too have my credits ready, but not sure about the banner. From the instructions: It also includes a click-through to the donations page or, if you have a web-site, a click through to your site. If you forward me a 120 x 30 through a 180 x 30 pixel banner, I will use it in place of the race name.

Guess you sign up and then send the other info in? Should we just link to rotoguru.com or to a particular page where we are discussing the horse racing game to try to generate specific interest? Should we use guru's standard banner or create our own?

Toral -- It's people like Gaz that I'm talking
about when I'm talking about warping the
game. Breaking down horses, trying to sneak
them through claims, etc. I have no desire to
compete in any contests or even races
against someone who stocks himself full of
his own starter horses that he didn't fairly risk
in claims.
-----------
8.5f is good.
--------
We should do something for the banner. I
dunno how to do that sort of thing :). I can
make up some sort of webpage with Gurupie
entries / stable stats or something. But not
until after Nov. 5.

Good week for me here. Finally got my
second horse to win a Stakes race -- Jericho
Velvet cranked a 112.6 on turf (manually
calculated from raceout.zip from memory of
the decode algorithm, so may be slightly off).
That was a 70,000 purse ... been a long time.

Had two maiden wins -- Red Summer and
Black Tie Senor. Both appear to have been
upper 70 speed performances. BTS was on
turf.

Crimson Prospector is at least respectable on
turf -- 3rd over 8f in 75ish speed. Maybe he'll
develop.

Got 4 wins overall, I think. Ice Princess
finished second in her Stakes attempt and
cranked a 109 speed, it looks like.

Won't get the results imported into the SSS
until tomorrow night, but things look real good
from here right now.

FYI, I entered 4 stakes races, IIRC. Sal At the
Bell ran a 95, Val's Desert got clocked, but he
broke 100 yet again.

Aweful race day for me. 11 races and only 1 win. Most of them were near the back of the back and I had some decent horses running too. From now on I am not going to bother entering unless I pick a jockey too. Just not worthwhile. At least half of my barns are going to low level claimers in the weeks to come.

Just an FYI... Gorytus looks like he is headed for a sim record for wins in a year. At the current pace, he will get 76 wins this year.

The top GSR stable, I think, is on pace for a measly 53.

In a warmup for week 1600 Blushing Niner got a convincing Allowance win and now has 3 wins in 4 races. River of Gold Again couldn't hold on in her Stakes race and came in 3d for a record of 3-2-2 in 7 races. Fast Flying II came in 2nd in a maiden race.

Congrats, STL.

My day really sucked. I didn't get a single win. First time in I don't know how long. I entered a few horses into Stakes races that I shouldn't have.
---------------
Madman ROTOGURU CHAMPIONSHIP preview update:

* Enigmatic (2yo Filly) ran a dismal 71 speed over 8f on dirt. Maybe her 83 LTO was a fluke.

* Irish Green II (2yo Colt) didn't handle the slop, and jogged home in 70.9 over 6f on dirt. Ugh.
-------------------
Not complaining here at all, but FYI ... I don't have a lot of competitive horses at 8.5f on dirt. Amazing, eh?

Right now, my preliminary three horses would be:

*Sal at the Bell (4yo Colt), 104 max over 8.5f D.
*Tow's Terms (5 yo Colt), lots of decent races at 8f, but not sure if he can go 8.5.
*Lots of horses in the mid to upper 90's. Maybe Honey Bunny, Private Count, Ms. Secretive ...

This gives me something to shoot for next year, however. Gotta build my barns to get the best Gurupie horse!! :)

I'll try to look through my two year olds ... but Blushing Niner might be the hot favorite. You've got some good young'uns there, StL.

I may do an emergency last-minute credit breed to try to get a decent horse in this thing.

Belated grats on Jericho Velvet's stakes win, last week.

This was another of those busy weeks -- 20 races, and five wins. 3 were cheap claimers, but AP Fappi resuscitated a dwindling career with an allowance win. He actually was entered first into a claim race but didn't draw in; maybe he got the message. He ran an 104, making him a possibility to show up in week 1600. Nail Endangering ran 3rd in a stake.

None of my good 2-year-olds ran today.

Nice race by Blushing Niner in the slop. That one will need a rain dance on week 1600!

Man alive, I couldn't resist. Ugh.

I saw Storm Cat available for 3 year old breeding for 299 points ... I had to do it. Ugh.

Storm Cat x Mr. Prospector x Halo for 663 points. Had to come up with a name on the fly, and went with Risk Theory. Studying too much math for actuarial exams, I think.

I'm breeding over 12149 Stark Secret who was my only entry in the claiming ranks. So there's some chance the breeding will be cancelled. But I don't have any clue why anyone would have put in a bid for her. She was 20+/1 odds in a 15K claimer. . .
------------

I've got to start entering my horses into claimers. I did a quick calc last week regarding # of wins and such in Allowance or better races in GSR. In allowance runs, I have as many wins as almost anyone.

The problem is that I am not entering ANY horses into claimers anymore. Just one or two. I've got so many marginal 90-100 speed allowance horses that it is not even funny.

Or they are 2 year olds that I spent a fortune breeding and I want to give them a chance (like High Priestess).

Oh, and by the way, I also got shut out of 2 2 year old filly races ... UGH. One of those was Saxon Dusk, who I need to get in a race soon if I want her to be 1600 eligible.

hmmm, I was looking through the devil01 stable for some breeding stock and came across an interesting horse (I have only been running Sixth Deputy and Blushing Niner). Financial Sky(IRE) 5yo male (El-Mana-Mou x NijinskyII x Secretariat). The interesting part is that this horse has 23 races and not a single sprint? I'll definitely need to give him a whirl.

StlCards -- More than 600! Ugh. But I've spent that before on horses. Every stable is below 350 now, however, so I'll be sitting on my BP's as well.

I don't really have that many wasted ID numbers, however.

Actually, my stables are in a big mess. I have a bunch of horses that I really don't think I should dump, but who aren't going to get me a decent win% in allowance competition -- Georgia Park, Autumn Dancer, etc. I mean, a horse that can go 100+ is a horse you should keep, yes???? Dunno.

I spent all this time and effort trying to acquire decent horses. Now I have a bunch, and I'm still not where I want to be. Maybe the answer is to go all-out claimers and Stakes horses.

I do think I'm going to let Secret Society go. His 3 year old season just hasn't been there. A bargain breed, I suspect he's just not developing.

I know what you mean Madman. Same is true of Sixth Deputy and even Hero Grub. Sixth Deputy wins the Iron Horse and runs a couple of 112's, but can't seem to do anything since Iron Horse. Hero Grub is definitely not Stakes quality.

I would really like to breed some more horses, but I just don't have the time to research like I need to. Earlier in the year I was looking at multiple things including dosage profiles and using the SSS heavily. Now I can't even remember the last time I downloaded the raceout file.

I do have some horses that are good enough that I want to see what I can get out of them, but no sure stakes winners. I did enter Rich Wine in a stakes again this week as I think the jockey just sucked last time. Went from at least 4 races in a row over 100 to an 86. Not sure if it was the extra .5f, the layoff, the jock, or "class factor", but something sure kicked in.

I seem to be missing something regarding stakes horses. The winner of the last stakes Rich Wine faced won with only a 96SP over 8.5f. Hardly a blazing race.

I seem to be missing something regarding stakes horses.

You and me both.

I think Mike does has a class-factor programmed in. But it's not insurmountable most of the time. Maybe it's related to the # of races a horse has won or raced. Jericho Velvet got shellacked in Stakes competition every time he tried ... and then he busts a 112.

Part of that is probably luck. But part of that was bad luck before. Or he was scared to death. Will be interesting to see how he runs if / when he returns from injury. Or, stakes runs just have a higher variance in terms of speed ratings, and he got some crappy runs.

What I'm getting at here, however, is that sometimes I think horses get "slowed down" by Mike in Stakes races. This results in exceptionally capable horses throwing more dongs in Stakes races than they would otherwise. Other times, however, a horse will run a lights-out race (for them) and finish in 8th.

With all that said, your specific example seems to be a race where the field -- no offense -- sucked. Rich Wine should have waxed that field. She didn't, so I either conclude that she can't run 8.5f, or she had a crappy run. As I said, that happens with increased probability in stakes runs, IMO.

When looking at a horse's ability, I don't like to look at Stakes speed factors. Increased variance => less meaningful info. All just my hunch, however. No data to back it up other than anecdotes.

So, I'd give her some more chances before concluding that the extra .5 was the deciding factor.

I do feel very insignificant when I can only see my horses last 5 races, and can't remember what my strategy was supposed to be. Hopefully in the next few weeks I can download all the raceout files and get them loaded up. Probably will just do it after work and burn a CD to bring home. Will sure save a lot of time that way.

Somebody butted Gary's HTML teaching thread in one of the forums that dealt with reproducing pictures. Timely, as I'm trying to figure out how to produce a banner for Week 1600. Didn't take long to learn how to steal the rotoguru logo:

[RotoGuru logo]

The code for this is (IMG SRC="http://rotoguru2.com/images/gfs2.gif" WIDTH=316 HEIGHT=66 alt="[RotoGuru logo]") with different brackets. I wonder if I can shrink this to the right size by changing the width and height numbers?

Anyway, is this an appropriate banner?

I'll cross my fingers and hope that it's too expensive for Guru to bother to sue me for this ;)

There we go! That would be my banner. OK?

Name. ROTOGURUPIE SPECIAL? ROTOGURUPIE CHAMPIONSHIP? GURUPIE CHAMPIONSHIP? GURUPIE OPEN SPECIAL? GURUPIE ANNUAL? I'm dying here, need ideas.

Now that I'm into this I'm thinking of sponsoring a second as well -- either a) for fillies; or b) on turf; or c) for older horses -- 6+. Any suggestions? Just a thought -- I may change my mind when I come back to my senses.

What are the correct dimensions for that banner?

RotoGuru Run for the Roses! Hahaha. Dunno. RotoGuru Gallop ... RotoGuru Championships. 2002 RotoGuru Championships.

Winter Rotoguru Games.

Asinine Assimilation.
Sartible Sorties.
Assimilator Action.
RotoGuru Borg Bash.

Most of those names are crap, but I'm throwing them out there in case they give anyone ideas they can piggy back from. And some might have potential.
----------
Regarding another race ... I was considering that myself. It doesn't seem quite right to have all our races on dirt. So, I'd vote for a turf run. Especially since all my best runners are turf-capable, it seems (Jericho Velvet who will miss the Championships because of a split left hoof, Ice Princess, Val's Desert, etc., etc. Even Private Count, Tsultress, Ms. Secretive, etc., have shown some turf ability.). So that's also partly a selfish vote :)

If you go 6+, I don't have much I can enter, either surface. Tow's Terms and Georgia Park are my only 6+ of any quality, and they may be running in the open championship over 8.5f that you are already sponsoring. Not trying to say don't do an older horse special, just making you aware that I don't have very many horses that can meet that criteria.

I'm still pondering; thanx for the suggestions. I like "Gallup" in the title, maybe RotoGuru Gallup. And if I do sponsor another race, it will be turf then. I'm thinking a turf mile. Kangaroo Minstrel's not really up to the competition now, but I think he would like to show up, being 2001 Gurupie HOY and all.

BTW I have an e-mail in to Mike asking if I have the right understanding of exactly what I have to enter in the "banner" slot in the bid-race thing to get it done. I'm trying to remember if Mike announced on the MB recently that he has a new e-mail. Anyway I'll prob ask on the MB, maybe the GSB MB.

I dunno what the official email is. I correspond to him via this email address:

Simulatedsports@aol.com

That looks like the official one, IMO. Be sure to put "HORSERACING SIM" in the subject line.

Historically, he also used billgulch@simulatedsports.com , and he responded when I emailed that address back in early Oct.

8f on turf would be great for me. Too bad Jericho Velvet won't be there -- that's his preferred distance, I think. But Ice Princess will attempt to get her first Stakes win (she is a heavy favorite in an allowance run this week). She needs a bit of extra time off, and this would be perfect. I have a hunch 8f is too short for her, but she can still crank 90s. Private Count may go for it, as well.

And for kicks, I may see if Val's Desert can make the leap up to 8 or 8.5f for one of these older races.

I think we should probably keep the older horse races open to both genders. We just don't have enough really good horses to warrant a male only / filly only run.
---------------------------------
Regarding the race name(s), should we get 1 name for each run? Or Rotoguru Gallop -- Colt Championship ... etc.

WEEK 1565 Stable news...

* Ice Princess came in 2nd in 97+ over 11f on turf. This is the fastest any of my horses has ever run that distance (is that pathetic or what?) If there's a filly run in 1600, I'm definitely going to back her off and save her for it. She needs the rest.

* Risk Theory ran an 87.5 on a good surface to finish 3rd in her maiden debut. I'm OK with that as a first time out. We'll see how it goes from here. I ran her at 8.5f to see if she could handle the GURUPIE Challenge Cup or whatever it will be. Doesn't look like she'll do that. I'll point her to week 1586 and try her in a shorter run. At least she's not a total dog. She had a really awesome kick toward the end, which is a good sign, I think.

*Their Cakes ran the fastest over 10f on turf of any of my horses, ever, clocking a 94.8 ... obviously, my barns have been hurting for turf routers!!!

Without these Starter horses, my WPS would really stink. I also picked up a nice win from Speedy Whatson, who ran a 91.9 over 9f on turf. That, coupled with Steady State's maiden win -- a slow 10f race -- will give madman4 stables a few more breed points. I was down to 19 after breeding Risk Theory!?!?@?!

In Quest of Gold turned in a nice Maiden win. He's one of my earliest 2 year olds. You may remember Rakida's Plug from last season? This is his kid, bred to Rainbow Quest. 80.0 cruising over 8.5f on turf. This puts him right up there with Black Tie Senor(ire) for top honors for my prospective route-turfers.

OVERALL: 4 wins in 13 tries. 10/13 in top 5. Two maiden wins, two starter wins.

American Mint ran a horrible race to make his 98 speed run LTO seem like a fluke. Sigh. I have so many of these sorts of horses. Hard to know what to do with them. Tow's Terms is really starting to piss me off. 89.1 over 7f. I wonder if age is getting to him???

BTW, fun fact ... my runs this week, despite not having any horses over 100 sp, pulled my All-Time average route race speed up to 78.9 . . . and my overall speed to 79.6.

I'm gonna hit 80 (All-Time) by the end of this year if it kills me. In 2002, my average speed was 81.7.

I probably should design the SSS so that I can not-list 2 year old races in the average stats . . .

Not much of a day. 50% ITM in 12 races, but only one winner. 4 2-year-olds had their last outing before RotoGuru Festival Week (Week 1600). Hmm...the mint julep is the Kentucky Derby drink -- what's ours? Anyway, Private Party followed up the surprising 86 with a 62, suggesting the 86 was either a fluke or a preference for wet tracks. This filly may show up for the RotoGuru Juvenile Filly only after assessing the skies to check the likelihood of precipitation. Rusty Scabbard Now showed nothing. Reification ran allright, but at a mile. I did get at MSW win for Red Tory Theory, but again, at a mile on turf, which doesn't augur well for wk 1600 if that's the specialty.

Mine Devastation ran a 105 at the RotoGuru Gallup distance, in stake company :)

cab great to have you on board again! I just started a thread for the upcoming series.

It's $15.00 per race, assuming you want to do a Stakes run. This is basically what I have down right now ...

6.5 D, 2 year olds -- Sponsored by myself in ARK.
6.5 D, 2 year old -- StlCards
8.5 D, 3+, Open -- Toral

Toral said he might also sponsor an 8f Turf run. I think some sort of turf run is really needed.

I think we should also plan on making this at least an annual sort of thing. So if we want to sponsor more races, one idea would be to save it up for next time around. Or we could do something in the late Spring, too.

Or, a 3 year old only run ... lots of possibilities. Marathon runs ...

All the news from the sim world. Hmmm. I'm going to be doing a lot of sim work next weekend. I'll wait until then, if you don't mind :) Hopefully I'll know a lot more.

Overall, the sim is still recovering from the Breeder's Bowl bash last weekend.

Also, now is a great time to breed if you have the credits. Lots of sires are starting to go cheap.

Heard from Mike. He's willing to fix it. But he wants me to send him a link so rockafellaskank put this on a webpage for me, which is why you can see this here. No matter how many times I make it clear to Mike, I just know he is going to end up linking to this temporary page instead of replacing the banner like I'm trying to get done.

Graphics. Always a pain. Text is good.

LOL Toral. Maybe you should have rfs add a link back to here.
