Thank you madman for the tip on this place. This is a dream come true. Anyway, to let everyone know a little about me, I am a fairly newbie sim trainer.... No stakes winners yet. I belong to and am active in the ASR. I am the Editor of the Atlas Tribune, an ASR newspaper, and I am a sports nut. Football is by far my favorite, with Baseball #2, Basketball #3, and Hockey number 4. Sorry, those are the only real sports in my opinion. Like Madman, I knew nothing about horse racing before I started playing this game. I have since learned a ton about everything related too horseracing.

Look forward to meeting all of you, and where do I sign up for the Fanatsy Football League?!?

:) Glad to see you join us. The Football season is pretty intense. The Guru puts on his own "Pick 'ems" game that will come on-line shortly before the season.

Smallworld Sports Football is heavily supported in the forum, as is Echelon and probably some others.

I actually think the Smallworld Baseball is what got this site really rolling, although it was Smallworld Basketball that first had the Guru make his name.

And I hear there are some hockey nuts. But you'd have to check out that link for yourself. I'm too scared to venture over there :).

Welcome Fletch! I think you'll like this site. We even have Golf here. One thing is you'll find quite a mix of people. It doesn't take long to figure out who offers positive contributions.

48 races in one week? Wow! I think we can learn a few things from you. I had trouble placing one horse this week :) Good luck.

I'm another one that knows very little about horse racing other than how to lose at betting, which I learned rather quickly.

Hey guys I didn't want to start a new thread and I figured this would be the best to post in. I am a relative newbie to the boards having found the site just about 3 months ago and until this time I have posted exclusively in the baseball forum. I have been reading this forum for a couple weeks and am very interested in this game. I haven't checked out the website(I will tomorrow) but I would just like to know if this game can be played by the casual player, not a diehard. I can't really afford to be spending over a half hour a day on this but by the way you guys talk and analyze in this forum, the game seems like it requires hours of work a day at. I know a little bit about horse racing and watch the Triple Crown every year but I don't a lot. Is it possible I can succeed at this game only spending a half hour a day at it?

Any responses are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jeff

If you keep it limited to one stable then you will be fine. I run 13 stables with well over 100 horses total, and spend an average of one hour a day to make everything work. With one stable, and a good tutorial, you will be fine. If you have Yahoo's messenger, and/or MSN's messenger, I can walk you through the hard stuff. Beware. The game is addictive.

My take is that you will spend more time in the beginning trying to figure out how to play the game, but after that you can spend how ever much time you want. A litte or alot.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I'll have lots of free time tomorrow and hopefully will start a stable. Just one for now. Are there any good links to check out to get me started?

Once in the game, you'll find a link to Tipsheets / Links. I liked a lot of stuff in the SimGuide. You'll find a link to that there.

One of the big problems is that it is hard for newbies to get going. We need more places for help.

Also, it may take a few days for Mike to process your new stable acquisition. Just a warning -- you may or may not be able to get going right away. There have been a number of technical issues, and he's backlogged on that sort of thing. . .

My advice would be to take Advantage of Fletch's offer.

Also, don't bother reading all of the instructions in one gulp. Concentrate on getting decent horses. This means getting decent sires. Storm Cat, Mr. Prospector, Danzig, Forty-Niner (ok, he's a Mr. Prospector), etc., are all good to have in sire lines, of course. The sim is biased toward American sires, I think, in general, so foreign Chefs-de-Race aren't always that good.

Also, I think the sim favors speed horses a bit. Without some real speed in the lineage, the odds aren't good. Of course, counterbalance this with the knowledge that marathons are actually a bit weaker. So sires like Herbager, Graustark, Prince John, etc., in the Dam-Sire lines are very useful. There are tons of possibilities, obviously, so this is just a very scratch beginning.

Also, new horses are kind of picked over, so I think us relative newbies are at a real disadvantage. It takes a few months to really even get a start on a stable, I think.

Time alotment: I agree with the above. For the first few weeks, you'll be disoriented. The interface isn't great, and the instructions aren't well-written. Plus, there is a lot to the game, so experience is required. But if you are willing to put up with some failures, and if you have patience, I think you can even survive early without a lot of time involved.

I just tend to go nuts. :) But even then, outside of my programming stuff, I probably don't spend more than 5-6 hours a week on my 4 stables. Of course, some of that carries over. When you research claim or auction horses, you only need to do that once even if you have 50 stables. But for one stable you can probably count on a couple of hours a week looking for races, looking for claimers, looking for auction horses, looking for bets. But if you are busy some weeks, that's no big deal, you can skip then.

The Super Sim Searcher also speeds things up greatly, although there is an initial set-up cost there, as well. I advise getting familiar with the sim first. And then visit Mr. Coker's site (a link is available from INDY'S utilities, which is linked to the site directly). And you can get the SSS from Mr. Coker's site.

Good luck! And it would be great to add another!

Pretty soon, we may have to request a special forum for horseracing!

Welcome Aboard Fletch.
I've been gone for a few days, and didn't get any horses entered last week.
Need to put some effort into this week.
