0 Subject: My test for this weekend.

Each weekend, I try and run some specific type of tests that help me make decisions later on down the road. Maybe some of you can benefit, maybe some of you can't. Anyway, for the last three weeks, I have religiously selected the Jocks with the most experience and let them decide the best ride for my horses. This week, I changed gears, and did not select any jocks. I submitted all pre-set riding instructions based on how the horse has ran in the past. We shall see how things turn out.

Thanks for sharing Fletch. I am very curious ho it turns out. Right now I pretty much let the jocks choose, but wonder if that is really the best strategy or not. Hopefully I will get to know my horses well enough to make good choices for riding options later.

Good test. One little secret that I don't think is appreciated in the sim -- I'm pretty sure each horse's optimal start % changes a bit with race distance. Seriously.

Typically, horses go at higher %'ages in route races, roughly. But it kind of depends on the horse. Just something to watch out for.

I hope that your experiment works. Selecting jockeys is a pain in the arse, IMO. I'd prefer to just set jockey instructions.

As per real life, one would expect the optimal start % to change with distance. A lot even. Frontrunning should be more successful in sprints.

I have found ordering a horse to the lead in a sprint to be a successful wake-up call tactic. It was for Earl Gal today -- he won on .94 effort! It was for Napkin Kicking last week (the jockey picked the winning style this week -- I wonder if the good ones learn from previous good efforts) and for Chief Tom. But other factors may account for these successes -- e.g., Earl Gal moved way down in class and this was his first try on turf; Chief Tom had not been placed properly in a sprint before, and got the slop; Napkin Kicking was not sharp for his first race, and it was on the slop. The tactic did nothing for Alywagon today. But it's worth keeping in mind.

OK. Listen up boys and girls. Its story time with Uncle Fletchy. Going over my races, and seeing the data rack up for my test this week, I came up with the following conclusion: QUIT WASTING YOUR $^&@%&ING TIME SELECTING JOCKS EVERY WEEK! Experiment with those Jock settings, cause Jockey Select just doesn't cut it. Here is my stats for todays races:

48 races ran
12 Winners (Dont need to tell you that is 25 % in the winners circle)
5- 2nd place (10%)
8- 3rd place (16.6%)
and 7- 4th place finishes (14.5%)
add all of this together, and I had 66% of my horses finish in the top 4. I wish I had the stats of what I was running before using Jock Select exclusively, but let me tell you, I am a convert. This was truly amazing. Consider some of these stats for a few of my stables:
ggnew-5-4-0-0-1
fletchfarm-8-0-1-3-1
nagsrus-5-2-0-0-2
nagsrus1-4-2-1-0-0
nagsrus2-2-1-0-1-0
horsepimp-4-1-1-1-1

I have never had a week that saw these kinds of results across the board.

Holy cow. I may just do this. It would save me a lot of work.

I'll still go for jockey-select and great jocks for newbie horses, or recently claimed horses, just because I don't necessarily trust their previous owners.

But for my own guys, you can bet I'll be doing this.

I should also note that I tried setting ride preferences counter to one of my horse's preferred styles today in the Florida Flying, and it came back to bite me hard. Don't do that.

OK, I'm convinced, now for the $2 question - how do you determine what setting to use? For wxample, StLCards1 stable has Country Jodie who seems to like to jump to the front and went wire to wire for the win in a 6.5f race, but this week I increased to 8f. I let the jockey select and she stayed with the leaders to the end and got a show. Would it have been better to hold back? 2nd place horse started from the back and blew past CJ at the end, while the winner pretty much went wire to wire.

Use the Super Sim Searcher. It tells you roughly how the horse starts in each race. Very simple.

Do I need to download the latest SSS? I have one of the first ones.

All versions of the SSS tell you the Start speed. It's the "ST" column. I personally like the newest version. To install 3.0, you'll have to download the new complete version. And if you want the allowance condition information, you'll have to kill the old raceout's, and reimport. But all that is TOTALLY optional.

Would it not be just as easy to mess a horse up with bad riding options ,as it would be to improve your horse?....
I did try some riding options this week..I don't really think it made a lot of difference but then again i don't really know what i am doing!!..This is something i have left alone so far..I guess it comes with experience and experimentation..
Also if you get a decent jockey, isn't he going to let the horse do what he does best?..

The instructions are pretty vaugue when addressing the Jock issue. Do you want a Jock with high exp? Or do you want one that is on a winning streak. Not only should your instructions pertain to the horses history. You should also give special consideration to the pp it draws. If your battling from the 13 do you want to try and make a charge in front, or lay back and hug the rail. It is just another part of the game that makes it fascinating.

News on my experiences with Riding Select . . . Skin Jumping's 100 was with a manual setting, and overall, I've had very good results with manual work.

I thought that Our Nooses poor performance in the Florida Flying may have been because of my setting it contrary to his preference. But he came up lame after the race, so I bet he was hurt.

If anyone could explain how Agriculture Bomber ran a 7 speed and comes back RTG and not be hurt, I'd appreciate it.

A 7 SP? Only thing I could think of is that the jock forgot to get on the horse and simply walked him around the track.

Yep. A 7 sp. As in 07. As in 07.9. As in less than 8. For a distance and surface on which he's been raced twice before! (I couldn't find the longer 11-12f race that I wanted for him).
