Take this for what it is. An opinion. In most games you can tag something as the coveted currency of the game. In some games, the coveted currency are turns. In others it is time. In still others it is actual money. In this great sim, there are two very different types of coveted currency. The first being the actual race itself. You do not want to waste any races. Even though we piss races away all the time, we should spend our time minimizing the chances of "throwing a race away!" You will never get it back. That is why the time should be spent finding those races that minimize your compitition. Whether it be NW2L's, or 16 furlong claimers, always pick a race while thinking to your self, "I have the best horse on the field!" Granted we all want a stable full of stakes caliber horses, but in reality, we all have a bunch of bottom level claiming horses. Treat them as such and earn those B.P.'s, which brings me to the second coveted currency. The breeding point. It is the most important currency of the game because it lets us have a shot at putting together decent bloodlines in hopes of creating a champ. This thread is actually an off shoot of the one in this forum about "the Breeding files" I read in there that my fellow gurupies are creating horses at 40-50 b.p.'s and hoping for a horse that can run around the block in less than a month. YOU ARE WASTING YOUR CURRENCY. How many trainers out there can say that they bred a horse with less than 100 b.p.'s and got anything other than a bottom level claimer? None. If you waste 50 B.P.s on a horse, it has to win at least 4 claiming races to return its investment. What are the chances of that without it being purchased from you? Your better off saving up those b.p.'
s and buying someone else's cheap nag in a claimer for 5k. Believe me, there are a ton out there. Do with them what you will, but I will be saving mine until I can spend at least 300-400 b.p.s on one. Granted, it will take awhile, but the chances of me breeding one stakes horse with 300 are alot better than you breeding six 50 B.P. horses. Please do not be offended by my tone. Spend your B.P.'s how you will, but consider this. How long did it take you to earn 50 B.P's?

In some ways you are right. Getting a top horse probably requires saving some breeding points. But getting a horse for 30-50 pts really isn't going to set you back in saving up points. If you get 3-5 points/race, you can accumulate points at a fairly good rate.

Personally, I play the game to have fun, and breeding horses is fun. I enjoyed doing the research, finding out about sires, and the like. Eventually, I may go for a top notch horse by using a couple hundred BP. Setting aside 40 right now won't mean too much once I get into the 300-400 level anyway.

Lastly, a horses' success is not based on how many BP you use. While I agree that there is a reason certain sires have high values, I do think that one can use cheap sires and still get some excellent results. You may be right, but these are just some things to think about.

It took me a week to earn those 50 BP. Actually two. My first week with Rotciv stables I earned 41. . .

And it takes a lot less than 4 claiming races to return an investment of cheap breed. Actually, my two 28 point homebreds could easily have returned the investment after 1 race if I had put them into the correct claimers. Homebred bargain breeds can win up to 42 breeding points in their first maiden claimer, and mid-20's per race after that, IIRC.

Very good point JKaye. That is what makes this game so great. Everyone plays it for a something a little different. My goal, like most, is to have that one horse that just kicks arse everytime he/she hits the floor. It does not appear that I got any that meet that caliber in my 13 stables, save one philly who flat out hauls. My best chances of competing in the upper echelon races is to breed a monster. If you look at the points in breeding that goes into the stakes caliber horses, then my goal of 300-400 is on the lower end of stakes horses. However, I should have prefaced my original message by stating that the research into a horses bloodlines is probably my least favorite in the sim. When I do plan on breeding I plan on cheating, errrrrrr, borrowing another stakes caliber horses lineage to do all of my homework for me. Probably not the noblist way to go, but again. My Dam Sires next door neighbors sire who lives by the Dam does not interest me in the least :).

There is certainly nothing wrong with your method. Using previous combos is a reasonable method. I would have more fun coming up with my own combination, and also doing it with horses I like(Sunday Silence being one). To each his own.

And I should also note that the horses used to retire for those bargain breeds cost me $6 for the most expensive.

What is the expected number of breeding points needed to breed a Stakes horse? I don't know for sure. But I bet you need 900 on average to get one Stakes horse. I figure it takes probably 300 points, minimum, to breed such a horse, and you probably have a 1 in 3 shot.

On the other hand, there are a large number of cheap sires that have decent track records in the sim. How many times do you have to breed a 28-50 point bargain breed to get a winner? Who knows. The applicable limit probably isn't the number of breeding points, but the stall space -- you can't afford to have 50 bargain breed horses going for you all at once.

All I basically know is that I've run two of my bargain breeds. The first, I'm discovering I made a mistake. I should have bred for more speed. I'm glad I learned that with a 28 point homebred and not a 300 pointer. The second has run two 60 speeds in his first two races. Not outstanding, but it's competitive for a young 2 yo.

The third -- the 49 point colt -- will run this weekend.
