Not too much happenning on the Sim racing front at the moment?...

Debut time for my first homebred, Mooralay variety(4513)..CPU rates him 13/1 which isn't too bad i guess although there are only 2 starters with longer odds in a 11 horse field!!...

Sloppy staion(4107) is in a sprint race this week...He needs to put in a good one really to keep me interested in him...I read somewhere that if you have a closer, they sometimes have a hard time getting through the allowances after they have got through the maiden ranks...A couple of sprints with the jockey select at "go for the lead " often helps....I have thought about giving that a try..Or maybe not?...I might leave it for this one and try in the future if this is a dud run....Conversly if you have a horse that goes out quick and fades in the stretch, would a setting of coming from the back have the same affect?..Hick succeeding (5001) and Girlfriend parking seem to have this problem...Or maybe the races are too long for them?..

Not expecting too much from the other runners this week..Cherokee judge(2yo) steps up to 8f for a try..as does Voyage grimacing..(first start for Cab31 and first try at a dirt route race)..

Our Idols,Sparky brush,Boldly wrap...well, all i can say is...Here's hoping!!

Good luck to all this week...

Madman Stables are putting an interesting product on the race course this weekend.

90+ MAD Gurupie Horses
Next week will be bigger as Skin Jumping and Light Jupiter and Private Count go for their third wins in a row (yes, I got SJ yanked from his race this weekend to save him).

Straight Time Can this filly go 10f? My bet is a strong yes, based on her last turf performance. She's at 16/1 against (last) at position 8 in the 13th in Ohio. This is an ASR race, but expect her to surprise, and log another 90+ performance. This is her last "experiment" race, although I don't think there is much question but that she can make this distance.

Rakida's Plug is at 4/1 from the 2 hole in 0213 -- a reasonably high purse allowance NW1x field. He's pushing the distance upward, going 8.5f the first time since his maiden win. There are some other quality horses in this field, but the odds are solid for another ITM from the virtually perfect RP.

Babified Opossum Didn't draw into his race, darn it.

OTHERS

Well Bert Gives it a go at a very short 5f, which should fit his breeding well. He's at 5/1, and goes from the rail. ASR race for the Divisional War. Hopefully also will win Madman999 some cash.

Sal At The Bell Makes his long-awaited debut in the 11th in Ohio under Redden. Starting from the outside, however, I'm a bit nervous. Plus, he should be best at 8f+. Looking for signs that he's a keeper, or I'm giving up on my Miswaki faith. This is another ASR race, and he has virtually no chance to win. Just looking for a good effort here to keep my hopes up. I'd like him to be competitive at 10f and to break his maiden quickly. We shall see. . .

Secret Society My first homebred gets to go at race #2 today. He's switching to dirt and hoping for a miracle -- 24/1 against in 4605. If he doesn't really perk up, I'll just drop him to Maiden Claimers and get my breeding points back.

Miscellany Rate Learn, Alyrun Wing and others got really screwed this week. I placed my race requests Sunday, and it looks like it hurt. There were too many horses in some of my fields.

Overall, I think this will be a down-week. Probably will have a couple of winners. For the first time in several weeks, I don't see how I can avoid 2nd's and 3rd's . . .

cab -- I don't believe in the idea that jockey settings in one race affects a horse's ability for the next race. There might be some sort of "my horse really sucked LTO" bonus . . . although that's hard to say for sure.

As far as reading the "lines" -- closers and starters, I also think that's a lot of sim-nonsense, although it's a popularly held belief. But outside of Mike Wallace, I feel confident when I say that I know as much about how the race plays out as anyone, since I've decoded virtually all of the raceout.zip files.

Too many times people look at the line and say "he moved up in places, therefore he's asking for more distance." Well, half the time that happens just because there were a lot of speed horses in the race -- which makes your horse LOOK relatively fast in the end.

Too many people in the sim see a line where the horse fades and say "I better keep this guy short". For just a simple example, check out Manta Until Stones (51323). He's a lead horse; if he does well in the race, his line will be 1-1-1-1-1-1. If he does poorly, it will be 1-2-2-5-7-14. This has nothing to do with distance; rather, it has only to do with the relative abilities of the field, and his ability to compete that day.

For the record, I'm putting him on a turf try this week, even though there's little hope of it working. He's in the lowest tier of claimers . . . He actually is moderately serviceable as a low-tier claim horse until he breaks his NW2L restriction. But as a 3yo, I'm not counting on being able to keep him.

This is another personal rule I'm making up now -- never experiment in low-tier claim races.

I should also note that this week MIGHT represent a milestone of sorts. If I'm a bit lucky, all 4 of my stables may break the $100K in earnings barrier. Madman3 did this in 20 races; Madman999 did this a little while ago, although it was helped by an ASR race. Madman4 will also be helped by an ASR race (Buda U. win). Both Madman4 and Rotciv between 90 and 100K. . .

Also, if I have a good betting week, I can get 3 of my stables over the $1 million in cash mark. I haven't been putting much money down on bets lately, but need to do this . . .

jkaye:
Light Award--4410. 5/1 4th choice. Alw NW2L 24K race. Gets extened to 8f after two 85 speeds on 6.5. Here's to hoping the Affirmed influence allows him to extend to one mile and improve on 85.

Prosperous Buster--6504. 7/1 4th choice. 10K Clm. Ran 63 at 9.5f, 81 at 8.5f. Gets a shot at 9f here.

Midget Talent--5904. 16/1 longshot. Alw NW1x 21K. Running him at 8.5f to see what he has. This is more of a test race, and also part of looking ahead to getting him into a track restricted race later on.

Late Beau--3408. 7/5 2nd choice. MC 20K. Finally gets a shot to win. Went 0 for 9 in MSW. I think I may lose him due to the fact he has posted a 78 in his life.

jkaye1:
April Fireworks--0612. 7/1; One of 6 horses 7/1 or better. No idea what to expect here. Its a 32K purse, so hopefully he can do well.

Madman...So basically what you are saying is playing with the jockey select isn't going to help much at all?...In fact even selecting jockeys is not going to have too much of a bearing on a race?..I have noticed that since i have started that i manage to get one of the "top" jocks for just about all my horses, which leads me to believe(maybe) that not too many actually make jockey selections...

It sounds as though selecting (or trying to)the right race for your horse is more important than anything else....(Stating the obvious here really i guess, but if you have a "leader",for example, you need to be the only "leader" in the race to have a chance?..or if you have a closer 3 or 4 leaders who set a torrid pace amongst them and wear each other down and consequently slow up giving your horse a chance to catch up and pass?)...

Basically when i have found out who is going to be racing the next week i go through and find all the eligible races they can run in(within a reasonable distance of where they last ran)and after the entries start coming in,try to gauge which would be the easiest race to compete in (basically gauged by sp's)...Another main factor i consider is the amount of entries so that they actually draw into races...It seems i might have to change my approach and "try" to find races that might suit the way my horses run rather than look at what sp No.s others have done in the past...

I guess what i am trying to say is that every week it is basically a "guess" for me..lol...Not having the skills to try to analyze whats going to happen in any given race....

BTW...My stables need another cash injection if you have any good tips for the week!!..

Cab Playing with Jockey Select in one week won't alter a horse's ability in the next race. That's just my opinion. Playing with jockey select and start% can actually make a difference in any given race, however. Running a horse counter to his preferred style usually isn't a good idea. And, if you know your horse's preferred style, I think you may get a slight bonus by setting it correctly. Not sure, but Fletch's experiment maybe indicates that. Plus, whenever I've set the start % for a horse in the same distance as he's been successful at before, and with a field that's "compatible" I've had great results (only 2-3 times).

As far as selecting which field based on running style, yes, that's theoretically how I would do it. That's too much work for me, however.

I spent a lot of time analyzing how fast you need to be at each restriction level. Recently, I've been automatically choosing the restriction level that will make my horse maximally competitive (assuming I'm not experimenting, of course, which I do too much of -- at least for a good win%. This same experimentation is also what got me Skin Jumping . . . ). After that, I sometimes check race cards, sometimes not. This week, I didn't (logged races Sunday, didn't re-examine). Generally, if I sign up on Tuesday/Wed., I try to exame race cards to some extent. You do get an advantage -- and I do it just like you do -- SP's. Although for a few horses that have extreme lead-tendencies, I may also look at the whole line.

I don't have any great betting tips. St. Prospector at 5/2 in race 1414 is a good bet to win, however. #6. Wish the odds were a bit better. But he's a great dirt sprinter. His owner has been running him counter-to his start preference, counter to his surface preference and counter to his distance preference in order to slip him through claimers, in order to get a low-tag for starters later. Plus, there's a better than usual chance the horse will pull up lame because it's been mistreated.

I don't like betting the farm on picks where I don't know the condition of the horse, or even if the owner is going to win. Davarto also has a couple of decent potential tips on his Surf the Turf site. I normally don't do those, but I might this week. Not going to put much down, either way.

Shortnote to say I'mhere, and have some horses running. I'm visiting friends in Boston, and so can address you. Reconstruction ofmy computer will take sometime.

I think the board was ruined when Madman invited Fletch with his vulgar style and his 500 stables in. Oh well, Madman is a Guru type, and one can not argue with him.

Madman...you've got a lot of 'splainin' to do.

Another off week. Light Award flopped at 8f. Late Beau finished last in MC--now 0 for 10 all time. Midget Talent is off to the claimers. Where did that 90 come from??? April Fireworks finished 5th--hopefully it was a real fast race. Prosperous Buster was my only ITM horse finishing 3rd in 10K claimer.

Only hope for this week is that I got some of the claims I wanted.

Toral -- Sorry to hear about your computer. Hopefully it will be back in good shape.

How should we deal with newbies to Gurupie land? That was the question I struggled with. I don't want this to be a closed group. If someone comes across this board, I want them to feel welcome and to become part of the collective. You know as well as I that it's very difficult to really know the true intentions of someone over electronic media. Sometimes people come across as vulgar, sometimes polite. I've been burned worse than anyone here by other Gurupies, and I'm still putting myself out there to get burned again. I just think it's the right way to live.

Regarding the stable and horse rankings, I struggled with that problem -- inviting someone in with a lot of stables. But I felt guilty having the most, hahaha, and didn't feel in a moral position to be able to tell someone else that x is the limit. I opened the floor up for discussion, and there wasn't much, frankly.

At any rate, I'm open to hearing arguments for stable limits or what-not. For the record, I have only counted 7 of fletch's stables in all the "official" records I've been tracking. And he has promised to not do any horse-pimping in the future.

I also noticed that he promised a new issue of the ASR Tribune last week, but it didn't happen. And that he hasn't really posted a lot around here lately. So it's also possible he's found other interests. As I said, it's hard to tell with newbies.

Results No Raceout.zip, so I don't know SP's. . .

Rakida's Plug totally fell apart at 8.5f. Not sure what's up -- worried about an injury. Or maybe I should hope that was why?

Sal at the Bell Nice 2nd place in a very tough MSW race. If I knew speed numbers, this guy might have potential. My best 3 yo????

Well Bert Still hasn't broken his maiden, but finished in the money and 3rd in a 5f . . .

Straight Time UGH. The Sim Gods have it in for this horse. I really thought she could handle 10f. Guess not. I'm going to go back to 9f, where she ran a 97. If she can't make that again, this experiment is over.

Overall 8 ITM out of 14 runners, only 1 winner.

BTW, my 2K auction pickup, Rate Learn, just got his 3rd ITM in 7 starts. More importantly, this is his 6th 4th or better in those 7 starts.

And, he managed to beat the prestigious Maple Cap this week! Race 0314 if you don't believe me. Maple Cap managed a 3rd place finish, but didn't look good at all. Just an update, JKaye. . .

Thanks for the insight on the jockey settings Madman(and all the other info you post here and at the sim)...I agree that it would be very time consuming picking races on running styles...Will probably try to on the better horses i have(which are few and far between and not all that great but the best i have!)...

As for this weeks results...Nothing startling..
A second,2 thirds and a fourth from 8 starters...

My 2y0 claimer,Cherokee judge was the best performer finishing second in her race...First time at a route race for her and has given me a little bit of hope...(She has paid for herself now anyhow!)...
Sloppy staion and Sparky brush both finished third...Sloppy was at probably the lowest level you can get and still didn't go all that well..although to be fair, i don't really think sprinting is his best attribute...

Mooralay variety did nothing in his first race...Too long i think first out...Don't know what possessed me to put him in a 7f race first up...
The rest of them are headed for the claimers!!

Great run by Sixth deputy..This guy is good!!!...I would estimate he would go close to breaking 100sp(i had a look at the speed stats at Cokers site)...

Being relatively new to rotoguru,i wouldn't like to comment too much on the issue of newbies to the site...I guess you have to take each person as they come and take it from there...I do agree though that it shouldn't be a closed group...The rankings are a great idea although it is very hard to compare different horses really...age ,sex, speeds, consistency, class of races, class of fields etc etc make comparisions hard...(I think the MAD ratings are probably the fairest way for pure speed rankings)...Number of stables?...Don't know....How many stables do you have Madman!?? ;)...I suppose the more stables you have the more chances of having decent runners which i guess is an advantage...But then again if you can manage a whole bunch of stables, that is a feat in itself!....

I have seen the term "two turns" often enough but am still unsure what it means...Can someone tell me?..I thought it was 8 or 9 furlongs but am not sure...

My biggest highlight was Pepi Dan in my ggnew stable. He won his Alw2x race for 28k, and went wire to wire for a 4-1/2 length victory. His last three starts he has posted a 101,101, and 99 sp number. And I am expecting this outing to be around the same.

cab -- I've got 4 stables -- all I can handle. Two turns refers to any 8+f race. Yeah -- the MAD ratings should perhaps also add an age factor in there . . . but as it is, the horse rankings are for basically only mature horses.

Fletch -- Pepi ran a remarkable 102. Very impressive.

* indicates a Gurupie drafted horse. #indicates no longer a Gurupie horse

With a 102 raw rating done at greater than 8f, Pepi Dan blows the top off the MAD ratings with a 106 -- easily a new Gurupie record. Not surprisingly, this was good enough for his first Gurupie win.

Straight Time just had an awful performance this week, justifying my dropping her from the horse rankings.

Rakida's Plug limped home in a horrible 62 speed. This will cost him the top spot in the DRAFT rankings, surely. Hopefully, he's not hurt. 8.5f may just be too far for him, despite his win at that distance.

Sal At the Bell Stuns the Gurupie crowd with a 94.4 raw rating even though he was only RTG. I anticipate that he should be better at 8f+, so I'm looking forward to seeing this 3 yo develop. My fastest raw-speed number for a drafted horse.

Alyrun Wing Finally showed a little spunk, although not enough to justify the $35,000 I spent on this claimer, sigh. He went 98.1 to make his appearance on the rankings. This is a textbook case on why you can't get caught up in these numbers too much, however. I snagged him just because I could afford a fast runner. The problem is that he had used up most of his conditions, and that he didn't really have any room to experiment around. So, I'm stuck with a high-priced dirt-sprinter who can't break 100 and who has to compete in open allowance races or high tag claimers. Where he should have been this week, but didn't draw in. . .

Iago Heart Moved up to 26th with a solid performance.

Overall, not a lot of action, most of it from Fletch and Madman stables. If I missed anyone else, I apologize, and please post.

Also notice that I'm limiting this list to 30 horses. This is arbitrary. But something has to be done to keep it from growing too rapidly. This means that 31. Chief Tom, 32. Foxy Golf, 33. Erica Bark, 34. Midget Talent, 35. Country Jodie, 36. Jo Ann The Salvo, 37. Adam From Car are not listed here, despite 90+ MAD Ratings.

As we acquire more and faster horses, I anticipate that this list will continue to become more difficult to place on.

As an alternative, I'm thinking about strictly going with a top 25 listing that is arbitrary. We'll see. These things take time, unfortunately.

Only had two horses going this weekend.

Doughnut Sal ran way back.
Obviously didn't like the distance.
Now I know.

Gate for Bellies ran second - just getting caught at the wire.

MADMAN,
I downloaded the Super Sim Searcher and after installing it, when I try to run it, I get a Run-Time Error '429' - ActiveX component can't create object.
I have horses.mdb and raceout.zip in the folder.
Do I need to try to uninstall and reinstall.
Any help would be appreciated.

Also, how do I come up with the SP from the Raceout.zip?

Thanks,
Cliff

Not sure what the problem is. BTW, you don't need to put the raceout.zip in the same folder. You'll import it manually after you open the SSS.

Uninstall, and re-download the SSSComplete version. Someone else recently told me they had this same problem. Maybe my post was corrupt.

And then, obviously, re-install. The good news for you is that this is version 3.1. There are some very minor improvements in things . . .

And if the re-download doesn't work, I'll have to get more information about your system. Are you on Windows 98? 2000? etc.

Claims are up. I lost Prosperous Buster for 10K, and picked up Senior Raw for 13.5K for jkaye stables. sunday89 grabbed Arctic Phone and Nana Content, a 2yo.

Cab or Goatlocker What are the CPU values for Clam Carnival or Stock Geri?

Sal at the Bell jumped suddenly to $2.6 million after his single run. Blew my mind away. Suddenly, he's the second most valuable runner in my stables! (next to Light Jupter who is at $3.1m). Of course, CPU values can be bogus. Skin Jumping's was around $50K when I signed him. And he should hit 3-4 million easy after a few months. . .

Rakida's Plug is indeed injured, dang it. At least that explains his off performance.

Goatlocker I should also say that the best way to get the speed stats from the raceout.zip is to import it into the SSS, and then search for your horse or your stable.

I figured out the decode from the raceout.zip, but I told Mr. Coker, who had helped me with other parts of the raceout.zip decode, and I gave my word that I wouldn't spread it around. The reasons for why he made that request of me are complicated. At any rate, sorry.

If the SSS gets installed fine, it's a much easier way to get the speed numbers, anyway, since it does the decode for you (not that the decode is complicated).

Madman--its no problem. Yours looks much nicer anyway.

Congrats on Sal at the Bell, as he looks awesome. My newly unblocked horses April Fireworks managed only a 5th place finish, but did it with an 86 speed, so perhaps there is hope. Light Award has now run MAD races of 85,85,86. Gotta try turf, but I'm not seeing a real great runner.

JKaye -- With respect to Light Award, royal breeding doesn't guarantee anything. It could be age. With consistent mid-80's at his age, at least you know that you can breed him.

Now that I know a bit more about the sim, it could also be that you have a bit too much speed in those lines, and not enough stamina. Two speed sires in the dam-side might be ok if the direct sire is strong stamina. But Affirmed is only classic distance (rated as such by zgreat).

Stock Gerri's CPU is 700K.
Kind of wierd, because she didn't run and in my mind I want to think it was 750 or 775 before this weeks races.
Oh well, not sure what that means.

Gate For Bellies ran an 84 this week and just missed winning the race. Need to find a nice 7.5f race next time out.

I uninstalled the SSS, wiped out the temp file and the file I had downloaded and started all over again.

Got the same error message -
Run-Time error '429'
ActiveX component can't create object.

I'm running Win 95 on this machine.
Might try to load it on the laptop with 2000 and see what happens.
Didn't have time to play with it anymore yesterday.
Might try to look at it again later and see what I can find out.

I figured there was some kind of decode, but didn't spend much time trying to figure it out when I looked at the text file.
I also can understand why they would not want it to be common knowledge.

The Clam's cpu is 2.85 mil at the moment...

The cpu value changes are quite strange...After his first win for me he went up to 900k...He then dropped a bit...and after his second win went to 1.9k(approx) and dropped slightly while not being raced)...After his last start where he finished 4th he jumped to 3 mil...Since he hasn't been racing theses past few weeks his value has been dropping between 50k and 100k a week...

Goatlocker Windows 95 -- Have you downloaded all THREE files needed to run the SSS on Win 95? Basically, there's something you have to install on Windows 95 BEFORE doing all the Jetpack stuff . . . See the SSS download website -- it's in the fine print somewhere. Could that be it?

I think the CPU value is based on some sort of average speed over the last 5 or 10 races or something. And the horse's age. And probably earnings. And other stuff. Interesting.

Oh, and regarding the SSS, you can go ahead and try again after doing the Windows 95 thing. But I'm working on version 4.0, which will include the ability to do SIRE, DAM-SIRE, and DAM-DAM-SIRE searches if you've also downloaded Davarto's sire search program (from surf the turf . . . see the main sim site for a link).

If you've downloaded and installed version 3.0 or later successfully, you should only have to download a small file to upgrade to 4.0 . . .

But unless you have Davarto's sire search program, then this won't matter. In fact, it may be a bit less pretty.

That did it.
The wierd thing though is that I do have Access 97 on the computer.
That is why I ignored that part of the directions.
Oh well, it is working now.

Now I just need to download more weeks than the couple that I already have.

Question - Can I rename all of them raceout.zip?

Yippee!! As far as my program is concerned, you can name them whatever the hell you want.

However, be warned that you'll have to open the program, and import each of the files. For some reason, I could only do this about 15-20 at a time. So I recommend putting them all in a raceoutarchive directory on your harddrive (assuming you have room), and then going through and loading them in en-masse (15-20+ at a time -- it's a lot faster. Believe me, I programmed the thing, so I know the routines. Basically, you skip a lot of database compacting.) And I'm burning a CD after I finish up version 4.0 for the ultimate backup.

Also, I'm a bit worried about megabyte useage. If you're on a windows 95 machine, you're probably on a small hard-drive? As I posted elsewhere, each recent week costs about 700K. The total since the beginning of the sim is around 65 megs. But you have to double that in effective space, since I compact the database everytime you run (and this process requires copying the database temporarily).

Lemme know about your constraints on this dimension, and I can maybe give you better advice, although I'm not sure what.

Davarto's breeding file is required to take advantage of version 4.0, and it takes up about 20 megs installed.
