0 Subject: Is there a Shaq/Randy/Pedro equivalent in soccer?

Someone asked this on the football boards and, for those of us new (ignorant!) to soccer, like me, it is a good question.

Those of you who played basketball know that Shaq was someone you had to have. Ditto in baseball with Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez

Is there someone with that status in soccer? Someone you must have, either at the beginning of the season or as soon as possible, to be successful or achieve a high ranking?

Thanks to all for your patience with a beginner.

VIDevilRays, thats a tough one. IMHO almost every team has at least one superstar who controls play and can solely influence the outcome of a game.
Thats just how I see it, sorry if that doesen't help much.

Thanks Frank p. I have never followed English soccer or its players. I am just trying to get a feel for the game, its nuances, where the most fantasy points are scored, use of transfers and why, etc.

I never play anything just to play; like most gurupies I play to compete. Does appear to be a fascinating game so any helpful hints anyone can give me along the way would be appreciated!

Good question, VIDevilRays. I was wondering that myself. I suppose we'll find out as the season progresses. Another thing I'm wondering is the composition of the top players. Will there be positions like stud pitcher/1st base that will make up a sizeable proportion of the top players (or have very few players, like 2nd base)? It would be great to see a table with SWP based on last season's stats, a la Guru.

The way I have read the scoring system would indicate that scoring mid fielders will get us the most points.

Standouts require:
- Lots of points overall regardless of position
- No real close competitors on there position

From the list with points from last years season there is not telling if there is such a player. Sami Hyypia was the top overall player. But Thome (another defender) from Chelsea had the highest average per game. In the top 10 on totale points are:
1. Hyypia D
2. Phillips S
3. Lampard M
4. Yorke S
5. Speed M
6. McAllister M
7. Schwarzer G
8. Izzet M
9. Di Canio S
10. Scholes M

Mostly midfielders! But not scoring ones, more the allround players like Izzet, Speed and McAllister type. Scholes is a real scoring midfielder though (Lampard is in between).
So it appear that if there is a player you have to have it's Hyypia, cause he is the best defender by far (Elliot, the number 2 has 800 less points). But with soccer one season doesn'te predict the next as well as it does in Hoops, Hockey or Baseball).
And about scoring midfielders; it looks like allround midfielders are the better pickup.

Conclusion; there appear not to be any Shaq like players from last years stats. But the standouts will appear at Goalkeeper and Defense positions. Especially on defense players like Thome and Hyypia could make a difference. But there prices highly so the real advantages could be fragile.

Thanks Edgar. Great post-where did you get last year's smallworld points stats from?

I agree with Edgar-there will be no Shaq/Bure,Jagr/Ped,RJ syndrome. In most UK fantasy games last season you had to have Kevin Phillips, who was cheap as a player on a promoted club and couldn't stop scoring. He also managed to stay fit.But in those games prices are fixed for the season, and transfers are limited. The key to this game with its unique scoring system will IMO be getting players on the pitch. This is harder than it sounds with more and more squad rotation employed by the big clubs with Euro commitments each week.
Another factor is the high points possible for goalies and defenders on teams which are overrun yet defend well.It is not inconceivable for Richard Wright to make a dozen saves at Old Trafford(180 points),lose 2-0,and out-SWP the spectating Barthes at the other end.
Should we go for teams not in Europe?Risk good defenders away?Focus on tidy journeymen midfielders who can pass and tackle, and as Edgar suggests, score highly? Fascinating!

VD: I got the stats from SW in order to help them out with their pricing. Told them Lesaux was cheap as well......
El Tel is right in his statement on goalies. In picking players that will be on the pitch we should maybe indeed focus more on middle class team who have good players but don't play in Europe. These are the likes of Lampard, Anderton and Speed.
And, in addition, look for players on the good teams that are not rotated like Desailly, Keane etc.

Another important fact is that the season in the premiership only had 38 games (I believe). This is a lot less than in Hoops, Hockey and Baseball. This means earning roster value is less important and getting more games in is more important (you can ask Steve Houpt for a more eloborate analysis on this kind of subject ;-)). So watching the schedule and opponents becomes more critical than in the other SW games.

Excellent point El Tel. Do you go for good goalies with terrible defenses? It would seem to me to make sense based on the point system. Fascinating!

One of the reasons I like Barthez so much is that Man U's defense allows some shots now and again. They are such an offensive team that they can be hit with counterattacks. Bosnich didn't just sit there, why would Barthez?

Edgar-somehow I guess we were posting around the same time. Didn't see your last message until now. Thanks. Can I ask an innocent question-what do you mean on the pitch? And are you saying that players with Euro commitments actually up and leave their teams in the middle of the Premier League?

Eat Acid-sure wish I could help with your question!!!

on the pitch-- means on the field. Players that will play not warm the bench.

VIDevilRays- Pitch=soccer field, so what Edgar might mean is players who will be playing (as opposed to sitting on the bench).
As far as international commitments, these hold a higher priority than club matches, so teams with internationals have to do without them when they get called to duty. This fall the big show are the Olympics but there are usually internationals and qualifying rounds for some tournament or another throughout the season. A player like Kewell might miss the first month or so of league action because of the Olympics.
Another thing Edgar might have been alluding to was that some teams, eg. Man U, who play in the European club tournaments-Champions League, UEFA, etc.-often play their best players in these matches and treat certain League matches less seriously. For example, if Man U play Lazio in the Champions League, then play a league match against a lower-tier team like Everton a few days later, you can probably bet that Giggs and all the other stars will play against Lazio and that at least a few "second-stringers" will play vs. Everton to let some of the top players rest.

That is exactly my point Bubba. Most big clubs have some kind of system, they call it roatation, to give their players some rest. However some players will almost play every time cause they are essential to the teams succes (like Keane, Viera, Desailly and others). My point is that you don't want to buy the ones that get rotated out every now and then.

Thanks everybody. Have a feeling I may be a little overmatched in this game:)

No worries, VIDevils, I think most of us are in the same boat and trying to learn as much as we can in a short amount of time. That's what this board is all about :) And don't worry too much about squad rotations, it's just like the other sports where team schedules and probable players have to be taken into account.
