Tomorrow morning I'll leave for my holiday. Returning on the day the first roster freeze takes place. So I hope none of my players gets hurt ;-)
Lately I've done some more in depth research on the schedule and players who will be worthy of picking up. Since we are all new at this game I'll try to share some of my ideas with you. It might not help, it will never hurt!

On the schedule. The rules state that there is just one freeze every week. So there is not much possibility to squeeze in extra games. But beware if some of your players don't play that week.

On the players. Here are some that look good:
1. Frederic Kanoute - S. Just over 2M and looks like the best bargain in the game. Last year had an average SWP/G that would have put him in the top 15 players.
2. Joe Cole - M. Just over 3M and is the best prospect in English soccer. At 3M a steal it seems to me.
3. Ronny Johnsen - D. At 500K this guy should make the starting line up alongside Jaap Stam. Playing for United at that prices makes him a real interesting option. Keep a close watch if he'll start though.
4. Graeme LeSaux - D. Returns in the charity shield match. If he's fine he will definitely make the starting line-up
5. Sander Westerveld - G. Most promising young goalie in the league. Good squad but enough saves to make. Could be top point getter at goal
6. Fabian Barthez - G. A steal at his prize. Now hope he gets to make some saves ;-)
7. Darren Anderton - M. Tottenham with a grealt improves, finally healthy squad. Anderton could have a career year.
8. David Batty - M. Although he's one of my least favourite players his griding high energy style seems fitted for the poinstsystem. At 4.2 M his average SWP/Game indicates this.

On the strategy.
I would invest in some big guns and try to load up on money makers early, just like the other SW games. And remember to take players that play (not the soccer equivalents of Durazo and Cabrera)
Mind the schedule as well. Pick up strikers that will go to face bad defenses like the teams that just got promoted. Preferably at home.
Also I think it's smart to pick up players from the midtable teams like Tottenham, Newcastle, West Ham and Leicester. They don't play in Europe, and they seam to work well with the scoring system, it's weird but the top players from last year seam to come from those squads.
And last but not least.

Be real lucky cause soccer is very unpredictable

Heck our national team missed four penalty kicks in a row. Who knows what's next ;-)

good luck.

Thanks for the insights, Edgar. Some of these guys were on my research list (Cole, Kanoute) but the others are still new to me.

This should be a great season, and big learning experience. But if I am able to transplant some SW strategies from other games I should be at least able to keep my head above water.

See you on the pitch!

There's that on the pitch again:)

Edgar, for those totally new to this game and Premier League Soccer, thank you. This is invaluable insight.

I have started doing some research also; however, the insights you provide never are learned through research. I can read soccernet in depth and never find this stuff.

From a soccer newbie. Thank you!!

I think soccer is sport that relies on streaks more than others fanstasy sports. Players can score goals in bunches and can go on droughts for prolong periods. The key to finishing well is riding these hot streaks and avoiding the cold ones.

Personally I think Davor Suker will regain the form that he had during France 98 where he won the golden boot. He has a point to prove against his former team Arsenal. He will have no competition for playing time not like at Arsenal.

Just a heads up for all of you statesiders. Remember that the first roster freeze is 12 p.m. Saturday U.K. time which I believe is 7 a.m. East Coast time. So remember to get your rosters valid before then.

Should be fascinating. Thanks to all for your help. Look forward to continuing discourse during the season.
