Subject: World Cup players to pick

Well, Ronaldo is the obvious. I like Fowler and Owen (GO LIVERPOOL!), and I know Beckham is injured... Are any of the players I've just mentioned injured? Anyways, since there are about a million players to choose from, I'd like some advice please for good pickups. |

Ronaldo has effectively been crocked since the last World Cup.Fowler plays for Leeds,is not yet confirmed in our squad, and when he is his role will be that of a reserve. Our leader,Beckham is looking like he will recover in time;unlike his best man,Gary Neville.I'd watch the warm-up friendly reports like a hawk. Good picks
Keepers: Kahn, Chilavert (he scores like a forward!) Defenders (i suggest only players that can easily score or make assists): Samuel, Materazzi, Ziege, Campbell, Roberto Carlos (a must take), Gamarra, Candela, Cafu, Umit Davala (he's an offensive midfielder listed as a def.), Harte, Guigou, Hierro, Lucio, Laursen, Simic, Tudor (he scores a lot of goals), Midfielders: Doni, Totti, Ballack, Luis Enrique, Beckham, Rivaldo, Emerson, Recoba, Roberto Acuna, Ljungberg, Zidane, Figo, Rui Costa, Kily Gonzales, Nakata, Jorgensen, Ortega, Scholes, Titov, Wilmots, Zahovic, Solis, Stanic, Olisadebe (he's the top forward of Poland but he's listed as a Mid...why?) Forwards: Vieri, Ronaldo, Raul, Owen...come on, you know them! Some "sleepers": Larsson, Ronald Gomez, Santa Cruz, Eto'o, Emile Mpenza, Pauleta, Sellimi, Nishizawa

mIST:
You'd also have to add Buffon at GK. Italy typically gives up very few goals, and Buffon is one of the World's best.
Your list is also missing a number of promising Argentines (except Samuel and Ortega) -- and many consider Argentina to be this year's favorite.

Buffon isn't sure to be the #1, I hope that Toldo will take his place. Maybe I forgot Barthez that, btw, is a shame of a keeper but he plays behind a great defence. Argentina...let's see, I could add Javier Zanetti, but he doesn't score a lot and now he's more a defender than a midfielder; Veron, but he has never scored so much; Aimar and Saviola, who are two good picks but they are not sure to be in the starting eleven; Crespo, instead, is in the "you know them" club :)

Fair points. I really love this game. I'm spending hours putting together my Azzurri-focused team. And MIST, you're smoking crack if you think Toldo will start over Buffon.

Toldo is far far better than Buffon. Think at Euro 2000, for example. Anyway, it would be better with prices...this way we're all going to have similar teams.

Not so! Just look at the players you've mentioned ... You could field three teams with them! And add to the fact that there's always one dark-horse team in the final eight.

Ronaldo, even though he only played nine matches (scoring 7 goals) has the best average valutation in Italy. He scored 4 in the last 4 games of the Serie A. He's STILL the best player in the world, when healthy.

I almost agree with both mIST and Erik B. Ronaldo indeed still is the best player in the world, when healthy. Unfortunately he hasn't been very healthy lately. I'd rather think he'll be a bust in the same way Jaromir Jagr was bust in NHL - still one of the best but not quite as good/productive as we expect of him. Picking him may still be a good idea though.

just a thing from a fantasy soccer huge player: don't look just to player's value, give a look, a good look, to his opponents.......given this, i won't pick owen or even a lot from argentina, since they've a huge first round. I'll pick a lot from brazil, who has a ridiculous first round, and from italy.

I agree with my laziale friend, and would also add:
1) Look carefully at how teams use/define positions. Brazil uses its wing defenders as extra midfielders in most games. R. Carlos and Cafu have plenty of attacking opportunities.
2) Don't fall too in love with name talent in the midfield. Veron, for example, is an outstanding midfielder, but he only scored 5 goals in the Premiership this season ...

post 12 -- Ronaldo the best player in the world? Hmmm... What about a player who won one World Cup, one Euro Championship and the last Champion's league, all of this in the last 4 years only, among other things... Seriously, when you watch Zidane playing, I don't think you can contest his status as the current best player in the world... Then a guy like Figo could get some votes too... But Ronaldo?

Ronaldo has been out for almost 2 years, that's why he didn't win anything :)) Btw, i love watching Zizou playing, but I never considered him the best in the world. Figo? Figo has had a very hard season, and he's never been better than Totti, Beckham and Zidane himself, imho.

Any of these players injured or definitely NOT playing?
Strikers-Ronaldinho, Christian Vieri, David Trezeguet
Midfielders-Luis Figo, Patrick Vieira, Juan Sebastian Veron
Defenders-Lucio, Roberto Carlos, Fabio Cannavaro, Bixente Lizarazu
Goalie-Gigi Buffon
Playing in the "11 Trades only" division, I tried to pick players on teams that have a good shot at the finals (3 Brazilians, 3 Italians, 2 French). If anyone has ever played the Small World playoff football or baseball games, you'll remember that it isn't always about having the bigtime scorers. You need to conserve trades so you have some guys playing in the finals.
