No fantasy talk here, just the real action. And man, there's gonna be some action tomorrow when France beats Senegal 3-0!

Does Ireland have any hope without Keane and with the dissention in the ranks? Who will step up?

With Roy not playing, I don't think they will have much of a chance at moving on after the first group. Robbie Keane and Niall Quinn might be able to hook up every once and awhile, but Quinn is mainly a header person. He doesn't have the agility to compete up front with the better defenders. I can't see them making it past the first group.

I remember World Cup '90 here in Italy, when Cameroon beat up the Argentinian champions...so be careful my french friend, Senegal won't be so easy!

I see a surprise in the openning game... Like miST stated, this game has a long history of the champions losing the 1st game.

I see Senegal winning 4-2. Without Zidane, France won't be able to control midfield and stop the very talented Senegalian team. France's defense is washed up. They are gonna allow goals to the lighning fast Senegalian offense.

The team I see as the surprise of the tournament is Costa Rica. I know, it sounds crazy, But I can see them going through the 1st stage (Brazil, Turkey, China) because of their easy group, and then they are expected to play Japan in the 2nd round. A pretty clear way to the querters. They have a terific striker in Paulo Wanchope, my top candidate for the top scorer crown.

I agree on Costa Rica - and put my money where my mouth is, though I did "hedge" my bets a bit with Brazil... ;)

Mark Kinsella of Charlton, who has been injured much of the season, will take Keane the Nutter's place alongside Holland.Ireland have won with this pair in midfield.Quinn is limited to a sub's role nowadays.Duff will play up front with Sensible Keane and is in the form of his life. One to watch, bili.
tduncan,I hope you haven't done anything silly like bet on Wanchope. He is a clown.

tduncan what are you talking about champions have a long history of losing the first game? Champions have NEVER lost their first game in World Cup history! They are 14-0-2.

argentina lost from cameroon in the italy 90 edition......
anyway, i see germany scoring a bounch of goals over arabia, with klose stepping up. I even see cameroon to win its group because of their phisycal dominance (geremi, foe, lauren, mboma, eto'o, wome .......).
As the surprise of the tournament i predict the south korea, if they can keep the defensive concentration high......
I give a big look to Brasil, because it'll be a hard tournament because of the weather and humidity, and teams which have great ball possession will have a great advantage as they make the others run to catch the ball.
Believe me, it'll be ball possession and athletic form to estabilish the best teams.
I don't even consider france, because of their old and slow defense and because they seem to be a little hitted by injuries.
Even italy is a risky pick, because of our "zero technical" midfield, but if vieri and totti will step up a gol should be enough to win every game, since we have the absolutely best defense of the tournament, with nesta, cannavaro, panucci and maldini, and with coco and materazzi on the bench.
semifinals prediction:
argentina-brasil
portugal-italy

Piccolo, are we talkin' about the same sport?
Argentina lost from Belgium in '82 and from Cameroon in '90, just to make you two examples.

What about the US?! I predict we won't finish 32nd this time! I'll bet we go 0-2-1 (with a huge TIE of Poland)and come in 29th. Slovenia, China, and Tunisia will round out the bottom of the barrel with Tunisia going 0-3-0 and being outscored 14-0.

I think it's hilarious how all these journalists keep predicting we'll make the second round. Portugal basically has a free pass to the second round, and since no host nation has ever missed the cut, Korea ought to make it. If they choke, Poland will certainly outplay us. I have no confidence in the American team after the bitter end we met in 1998. Are we better? Sure. But this Tournament is about as far away from "home field" as we can get. Not that this makes a difference since we play friendlies in RFK and there are more Mexicans/Guatemalans/Costa Ricans there than our own fans. Are we better? Yeah, sure. But we ain't good enough.

Vai Brasil!

don't forget, MC, that South Koreans and the Japanese adore america and the culture. we have a better field advantage there than europe

We are ranked 13 in the world--I'd say that's pretty damn good--but we will still get hammered in the group we're in. I concede that Slovenia is a good team--they made the World Cup (while the Netherlands didn't). That doesn't mean they won't get shaken down in their group. Everyone has a bad spell once in a while. Remember how we lost to Iran in 1998? Iran!

I apologize tduncan for my comments earlier i was misinformed by CNNSI.com.

Motley Crue, your comments on the US team are dead on in my opinion. I only disagree with the fact that you are saying Slovenia will go 0-3. I just don't see that happening. If I had to pick anyone else to go 0-3 it would be the Saudis.

Slovenia, 0-3-0. 2 Goals for, 7 against. They stink!

Looks like I was wrong about Tunisia--man, they tied Belgium, I don't know if the US could do that. And just when I thought we were gonna get killed, we actually look really good. I think we have a good shot of not only winning against Poland, but also against Mexico in the next round. If we play Italy, though, fuggedaboutit.
