Russia - Tunisia off o a slow start. hat could be the first 0-0 of the competition. Or maybe not, even Belgium - Japan had a weak first half. Well'see. Next is the last match of the round, USA - Portugal, then it's Germany time. Have a good World Cup - day! :) |

Soccer would get much better ratings in the US if all games were like this.

It was a good morning to wake up to watch a soccer game.. What a shocker so far.. I don't think Bush though will declare today as a national holiday if USA wins... Haha

well, portugal is coached by a total idiot. how can you coach your defense in that poorly way?? they followed the ball, while even a child knows that on crosses you've to cover your man.... and than, down by 3 goals he waited until the last 5 minutes to insert nuno gomes, playing the entire game with just 1 striker. Believe me, oliveira is a total idiot. Anyway u.s.a. really impressed me, expecially demarcus beasley and sanneh.....a speedy team with nice technical skills......and now, if they can beat poland, we'll meet in the second stage... see you there!!!

Dang! That was a pleasant morning surprise! Portugal!?! Poland's chances are dimming.
They are calling it one of the 5 greatest US upsets in history.

And Ireland scores in extra time to tie it and still have some hope in advancing!

Sweet, now Cameroon can kick the Germans right back to europe and win the group, Ireland being number #2. I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed...

What a game! I was especially impressed with the USA's defense -- keeping nine men in front of the ball isn't easy against such a skilled offense. I also agree with the Lazio tifoso -- the defensive lapses by Portugal were very surprising.

I'm very happy for USA, can you tell me what kind of reaction did the media have about this win?

Wow! On a whim I parlayed Russia and the US to win. What a payoff. First bet I've ever made on soccer. I know very little about the game - I couldn't name a single player on the US team before this morning - but for some strange reason I always get interested in the World Cup???

Little to none. ESPN.com put it on its front page, which is unusual. But my sense is that people will start following the team now, and future games (esp. against Korea) will get better coverage.

Ireland again dominates the second half and deserved a win but we'll take the point - loved seeing R Keane score - Roy who?

Irri,re post 10:the most incomprehensible thing to me was playing Baia, who was useless, rather than Ricardo, who got them there. Also wasn't the right back a centre back out of position? Congrats USA. El Tel

el tel: you're right, infact i choosed ricardo for one of my fantafoot's teams and had to trade him......he's a nice keeper, which even baia was, but as you have seen baia hasn't the agility to be in the starting lineup for the world cup. The entire portugal's defensive line was wrong, since they again choosed experience over ability, putting together a very old line.....and on the bench they had bento and andrade who would have surely done better. Anyway, the most ridiculous thing has been to play with just 1 forward for the entire game, leaving a great player as nuno gomes on the bench.....what an idiot oliveira is.....

I second, third, fourth and fifth the calls for Olivieria's head! Pauleta couldn't get a shot on goal all game he was spraying them everywhere but the net....surely Nuno Gomes could have done no worse. Jorge Costa had just a dreadful preformance in central defence and Figo was far from his best. I was one of Vitor Baia's supporters before the cup but now I must say I have done a complete 180. It wasn't that he isn't right physically but he surely isn't right mentally. Simple plays such as catching a drifting cross into the box were plays that turned into great chances for the US. There must be major changes before the next game or Portugal will face a similar fate i fear. I would bench Baia in favour of Ricardo and find someway possible to get Nuno Gomes into the starting lineup. He may not be the most talented player on the pitch but he has a knack for the clutch goal and thats something no one else on Portugal(save for Figo) has.

To me it seemed that Vitor Baia tended to overplay the crosses, which led to him being off balance when Donovan's ball deflected off the Portugese defender, but that's just my opinion :)
